Lovely car, but man do I dislike that 'make offer' thing people do sometimes.  Feels like whatever you'd offer would be met with a long diatribe.

I will not answer these ad's that have no price. Or one's that state "Just testing the waters" Go jump in a lake.

Rare 1954 Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe 1 of only 725. In fair condition Hagerty's values it at over 25k and over 75k in excellent condition. Asking 17k OBO.

  • 331 Hemi runs smooth, only known issue is lifter valve ticks until it is warmed up
  • 2 speed automatic transmission, rebuilt in the mid 90s at which point a transmission cooler was installed, other than that completely stock
  • Power steering
  • Rust free in the rockers, kick panels, floor boards
  • Convertible top was redone and interior was reupholstered in 1998

Known issues:

  • Broken rod in the convertible top armature (can be repaired)
  • Typical exterior scratches/dings/dents nothing major, the body is straight overall, paint could use some correction work

Vehicle completely original except reupholstery and rebuilt transmission. Still on a 6 volt system

Beautiful and rare car, not going to find another one like it for the price. If it was perfect it would cost a lot more. No low ballers, serious inquires only.

A serious detailing would go a long ways on making this car really look sharp.  Give me a week and it will almost look like a different car.  Grab the Mothers and polish out that black paint,  then hit it with some Adams swirl killer if necessary,  after that take the mothers and do all the chrome, probably need a little 0000 Steel wool.  Bleach white the white walls and take some tire shine to the black.  Then really clean the glass.

I see somebody already hit it with Turtle Wax rubbing compound & a buffing wheel. I'd be afraid that after all that rubbing you might go down to the primer in spots and that black would still have a white haze to it with millions of fine scratches. My polishing experiences are somewhat limited but maybe with some careful finessing with the right compounds............

It's all in what compound you use.  On something like this I would try mother's mag and aluminum first.  Doesn't leave the white haze when it dries if done right and I would do it by hand to start.  The polisher he has in the background would take a long time to go down to the primer.  It's a random orbit not circular.   The car might even need a full wet sand and buff if it's bad enough.  2000 grit by hand cuts real slow.  With a little time you can get a feel for when it's getting thin without going through.  Probably a red primer underneath, easy to see it coming up without going through.  The trick is if it's a black primer with black paint,  though if you do go through it doesn't show as bad.

My guess is he stopped after getting some shine,  but not enough to cut the dead paint off.  When it dried it looked worse with the white haze in all the dead paint imperfections and light surface micro checking so he gave up.  This is not the type of polisher to use on paint that bad.  You need to go a bit more hard core.   Probably best he didn't.

I'm not overly confident of the sellers ability to polish since he is storing his polisher on the floor.  Nice way to pick up dirt on the edge and scratch the adjacent panel or trim.  I always atleast set mine on top of my rolling stool or some other off floor surface on it's back.

Its one of those nice old dry California cars by all appearances. I do have to question what I'll call "overall maintainence" if he never found the 15-20 minutes to polish the chrome of the vent window frames. Might be the first thing I'd do if it hit the ground at my shop.

The car is showing dual exhaust. That was a new option in '54 and not often ordered. Or duals added to a Calif V8 car would be common. A '54 NYer should have an early WCFB four barrel carb but it isn't mentioned.
Its a 2 speed Power-Flite car by the shift quadrant. Solid transmissions if serviced on schedule.

At least one of the headlamp bulbs is of the factory GE "Bull's-Eye" type (right side) and no detail available to verify the other. These are extremely hard to come by today. If BOTH are still there, it would be a pretty strong indication that the stated mileage is genuine. Bull's-Eye bulbs are the old antiquated engineering of a steel reflector shell with the glass lens sealed to the front. Hobby retail on these is getting almost prohibitive. But they sure speak to being a MoPar !

Would have been all real leather or leather /cloth combination when new. Surely the current replacement trimming is vinyl.

I like the car quite a bit. Realistically at fewer dollars. Edited by StillOutThere (see edit history)

I’m surprised this didn’t sell, since the price seemed fair.  If I were still on the west coast, I’d have been very tempted.

Buffing out dead paint is definitely a skill and not one I’m great at.  I’ve found that a good detail can often salvage paint that at first glance seems un-salvagable .  Also, a good paint shop can work wonders with the right compounds and it can be worth paying more for someone who really knows what they are doing.

I'm kin dof wondering what it means by transmission and interior not original. The interior looks at least period correct, and the tranny was what they came with in 1954?

That being said, that's a car that I'd gladly take if it wasn't 3000 miles, another country, and a 35% markup to purchase and move here.
