Engine paint color

Not looking for an argument here but would like to expand some knowledge.

We have a 16 completely untouched with a black engine.

Also have a 17 (never restored but some work through the years). It also has a black engine.I see no evidence of repaint.

we have four Studes (20-23) with light grey engines.

I always thought Studebaker

went to grey with the detachable head.

Any thoughts?

I have posed this question and observations several times.

Thanks,

Dennis

You may be right about the black. Was basing the gray on the early 20s original engines I’ve seen,  one original 1919 Big Six and a 1918 that was restored in gray. If you have seen 16 and 17 engines in black, then no argument from me on black being correct. I stand corrected.

Ok, Great, How about the hood color and radiator?  Ive seen them body color and black? Thats again on a 1917 ED big six series 18.  Any difference in export or not?     This is a fun hunt   Thanks   Roger

Black hood and radiator shell.

Many hoods are now body color due to owner preference.

I think I have a single page ad that lists a nickel radiator shell as optional. I will try to find that document.

This info.is from a 1920 sales brochure.

Series 19 Big Six was the first with the detachable head. Then all models starting in 1920. I’ve only seen medium gray as an original unrestored color on all early and mid 1920s so I’m going to say no on the green. A bit darker green came later, in 1928.
