R Walling
I took my first ride this afternoon in my survivor, (after sitting 62 Years, 39,000miles) The engine is so quiet that I thought it staled at a red light! It [s running a little hot, when I shut it off it burped thru the 4 lb. radiator cap. I have the timing set at 2 degrees. It starts instantly and idles at about 500 rpms. Could the timing be causing it to run hot? I do not have a shroud on it. (I think that there should have one but I'm not sure.) A quick buff with very fine compound brought the shine of the original paint right back on the rear fender and deck. Joe Cocuzza
If it is an 8 cylinder car then there should be a shroud. If a 6 cylinder car then no shroud. Getting hot could be several things. Radiator clogged Water distribution tube clogged Thermostat Water pump etc...... Do you have the timing set according to the shop manual? If not then reset it to spec. Also, you said you have a 4 lb radiator cap on it. The original caps were not pressurized.

Water went thru it as fast as the hose could run, nice and clean. There is no thermostat. Distribution tube was clean, checked it with a probe. front of head is within 10 degrees of the rear of the head New Water pump. I can't find the dist. specs. I an set at 2 degrees BTTC. I will look for pic's of the shroud and make one. After a 10 minute drive, I decided that it was time to go to a cruse night. The temp. dropped to 82 degrees and the gauged stayed below 190 degrees for the 15 Minuit drive home. I think that it will overheat in summer traffic though. 61polara
First off, you need to run a thermostat. It retains the coolant in the radiator long enough for it to cool. Without a thermostat, the coolant will flow through too quick and will not cool sufficiently. So by what you said about making a shroud it is an 8 cylinder correct? https://www.tpocr.com/Chry.html for timing specs It looks like 2 degrees BTDC is correct. Is the fan belt tight enough? As stated above you need to put a thermostat in the car. It can be detrimental to the engine without one. You may want to think about putting an auxiliary electric fan to help cool the coolant in the radiator - use it when in traffic, etc...
junkyardjeff
If you need a shroud I can look at a 50 in a local junkyard that has a 8.

A picture of it would be a great help, I may find the original one in the PO's junk pile.
JACK M
The front of these cars are almost like a funnel to gather air for the radiator. But you would have to be moving. The problem may well be behind the radiator. I like these if purity is not a concern. https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Universal-Black-Steel-3-Inch-Fan-Shroud-w-Mounting-Bolt-Kit,231354.html?_br_psugg_q=fan+schroud Edited July 16, 2021 by JACK M (see edit history)

I found an old Motors manual that states that the timing is 2 degrees ATDC. That is about where it was when I first looked at it. ???
c49er
A 1949-50 Chrysler 8 cylinder shroud won't fit the 1946-8 8 cylinder cars.
junkyardjeff
The 50 in the junkyard is now missing the radiator and shroud,it was there last year.
Jeff Perkins / Mn
Roger, I have several reliable sources for tuning information on your car. I just purchased. 1948 New Yorker and am in the process of recommissioning it. The factory setting for timing is 2 deg. ATDC. The recommended idle setting is 300 rpm. I felt that was a little low so I set mine at 350 rpm. Mine also is very quiet. I sent you a PM. Jeff P. Rusty_OToole
If the fan is close to the rad you don't need a shroud and Chryslers are usually very close. It probably never had one. I agree about the thermostat.
c49er
1949-50 Chrysler 8's all use a fan shroud installed by the factory.. as do the 1946-48 Chrysler 8's. Shrouds for the C39 cars are really tough to find. The Factory 1946-48 8 cylinder timing spec out of the factory service manual says....2 degrees ATDC as mentioned already. I set my 8 cylinder Chryslers timing at 2 degrees BTDC now days because of today's fuel. At full hard throttle I want the very brief and slightest ping between 10-20 mph for best performance and mpg.
