1947 A/C

Has anyone fitted an A/C compressor to a 248ci 1947 Buick motor? I would love to hear how it was done.

Nope, but if I was going to, I think I would put the compressor where the generator is and using a twin belt compressor pulley, use that to run a re mounted generator.

Biggest problem is belt wrap and you will only find twin a/c pulleys in "A" section sizes.

Driving the system is the hard part. Not sure if you could modify or use a different harmonic balancer to get another pulley grove on it?

Ben Bruce aka First Born put AC on his straight 8 Buick. If he doesn't see the thread, you could always PM him for information. If I recall correctly, it has to do with modifying pulleys.

Check out some six cylinder Rolls-Royce cars, they should be pretty similar even though 12 volt on the clutch. A good tin shop would make you a trunk mount evaporator.

Thanks for the replies, I can buy an after market trunk mounted unit but there is very little room on the engine for the compressor.

Here's how a Bentley 6 AC mounts. They usually have a vertical compressor like an early MoPar or AMC. you make a little platform for the compressor to suit on. It is tight. If you are in the Rochester/Buffalo area I can get you some tips, just PM.

 It will go. There is a fellow here in the Buick forum.   His 1939, which has less space than yours, has A/C.   Look for JVelde.

thanks Ben I have now been in touch with JVelde,  Riki, what is your harmonic balancer (3 belt?) and did your fan clear the pulleys?

The two belt pulley is a repro small block chev from Jegs. I had it welded on to the front of the harmonic balancer then had it balanced. Fan will not clear so I use a Zirgo 3000 com electric.

I've seen JVerde's 39 coupe and it does work for him.  Problem is, it's all too complicated for me.  I always figured cooling would be the big problem.  I don't know how he had the cooling issue solved.  A '39 barely cools with no restrictions.

Thanks for the comments, I have looked at the photos and am a bit hesitant to go that way, looks like a lot of hard work and goes too far away from original.

As you can see my 40 has a twin carb 41 Super 248 in it plus roll and pleat interior and lowered. A/C was a natural addition,however I used only the original Buick drilled holes to mount everything. Can return to 100% original if I want.
