Meet "Toby" my 50 Model 51 project

Recommended Posts

Carlos is back on Sunday doing his thing, adjusting doors and small fender rust holes previously filled with Bondo. Hood is next. Soon will blast the whole car to prime and start body work with good foundation.

Today we fabricated the corners of the rear bumper filler support Panel (bottom panel), then we fabricated the mid section of the upper filler panel and used the corners that I removed from the donor car. One less job to tackle. Two fans going on 94 degrees weather

Today inside of hood undercoated after days of scraping, acid (OSPHO) treatment and base paint. Not all of the original thick undercoating came off towards the front but sprayed over. Guess it will give it originality.

Removing windshield trim after 68 years installed is not an easy task. Been squirting lots of WD40 to stainless trim and rubber gasket every time I go by the car. As much as I was careful trying to remove glass with plastic tools, the glass developed a 2” crack that was immediately followed by a full crack when trying to carefully remove. Guess the car depreciated by $400. The way I see it once I install a new screen will raise the value again but since the car is a keeper, I think I’m  in the red anyways.

Your man Carlos is fantastic! Better watch him closely! I may “borrow” him the next time I am in South Florida! Great work!

Man you don't let any grass grow under your feet do ya?

Just have to finish this project. By the way, did the hometown guy ever sold his car? Remember he did not wanted to sell the doors. Tell him I have a title along with serial tags for that car

Good luck to him, I think he missed out on the opportunity. I believe he could have parted out the car and made much more $

Before and after picture of hood edge metal repair done today. This is about it folks next will be peeling the paint with high pressure water blaster to see if we miss any metal rust spot then next will be base primer to begin paint prep with solid foundation.

Don’t laugh at my contraption.... just trying to mold a piece of cardboard To the rear column contour of the car. The piece will be upholstered with the rest of the car when the time comes to do the interior. The original piece is made of very thin cardboard, just wanted a little heavier piece but was hard to bend so I wetted the piece and pressed in place. Lets see when it dries in a few days.89267E77-4AE9-44FB-933B-7912E00DACC1.thumb.jpeg.cc505c747745f2b599d48886f28105b3.jpeg

This is how the board came out. This is the piece that goes on the rearmost colum on the driver’s side. Tried to take the picture on a flat surface to show the curvature. It now fits like a glove.

Problem is I got the car partially disassembled and don’t know if it should be covered with headliner material or door trim viny. Need to see some interior pics of a 50 Tourer Sedan!

Clips are installed on the composite panel. As you can see they are flush on one side so you can cover with interior material and the clip side will snap into a 5/16 hole I drilled into the body pillar. These clips are for 60’s era GM cars but work well and available through evilbay. I used the same system in the 54. Problem is that it takes time to make a pattern with partchment paper, lots of measurements and patience. Still have to do the doors and the other side as this one

Can any body with a parts book can identify this mirror? Showing # 1164573

I don’t think this is the original piece for the 50 Tourer. Pictures  that I see depict right & left side mounted mid front door frame/vent molding location. CARS sells the kit just wanted to make sure since I don’t see any hole drilled from factory, not even on the bright work. This one that I took out was mounted with 2 holes but door frame shows 3 holes as on the pic and the bright molding was drilled as well

 So incorrect mirror!

now the question remains, dual mirror mid vent frame are the correct ones?

I will have to search for bright drivers side molding without any drilled holes!

thanks Tank
