1950 Crosley Farm O Road Restoration and more

Recommended Posts

More work on the Mark III.  Was a busy week at the shop so not much time to do side jobs but did get some filler on the bad areas and then another coat of sealer primer.  Hopefully now a good sanding and it will be ready for color.  Maybe...

In trying to do the touch up on the 1971 Lincoln Mark III with Bright blue Poly paint code 6 I keep getting the wrong color from my auto parts/paint supplier.  It comes out tons darker than the original color.  I have used Valspar paint system for years and would like to use it on this car but I might have to change to some other brand.  Has anyone else ever had a problem with Paint code 6 for Fords from about 1967-1971?  I have been looking online for over a week and see two different colors of vehicles when they say Bright Blue Poly or Acapulco Blue.  One dark blue and one that looks light the right color.  Is there something I am missing in an alternate color mix or ??????

I know what everyone is going to say and I might have to do it, and that is to get a part of the car color scanned and go from there.  But one of the easiest parts to remove is the gas door, but it was repainted years ago and is slightly lighter than the original color.  The car is masked off and was ready to paint so if I have to take the whole car and get it scanned I will have to undo and redo all the masking.  Also, not too many paint store in the area that have the scan tool.

Who would have thought a car that is just 50 years old would have so much trouble getting the paint color right.  LOL

Any help would be appreciated.

Got the proper color for the Lincoln.  Valspars paint formula is wrong and the paint man at the auto parts said they don't care, he has called before and they never answered his questions.

Got the passenger side painted and now on the driver's side.

Also did some stripe work on the wife's car, plum crazy.

Was a good day to paint.  The Mark III was calling my name saying paint me, so I did.  The humidity was about 80 percent, but everything went well.  This is a single stage acrylic enamel paint.  Has been a while since I have painted with single stage 🤣😆.

These week is the National Crosley Meet in Wauseon Ohio.  Today was the day to load the FOR and some spare parts so I can head out tonight.  Hopefully the weather will hold out and we will have a great time.

Another wonderful Crosley Nationals in the books.  Good weather, good cars, good food and great people!  Fun times for all.

The FOR did well getting first place.   And the best part is it was the picture vehicle for the FOR trophies.

With the Mark III finished and gone, it is back to work on the 1948 Chrysler.  It needs brakes shoes and wheel cylinders all the way around.  Got the rear of the car jacked up and wheels and drums off.

Getting back to the 1948 Chrysler Windsor brakes.  I got new shoes, wheel cylinders and have been installing them when I get time at the shop.  I found out that someone has changed a spring on the rear drivers side with a incorrect spring.  And the front driver side is missing both springs, someone had it apart and started breaking things!

It is getting closer to being done though.

Hopefully finishing up on the 1948 Chrysler Windsor, got the brakes on and running on it's own fuel tank, after taking the tank out and flushing it good.  Had a problem with the pickup tube, was plugged solid!

Now to finish bleeding the brakes and tidying up a few loose ends.  Does anyone know where that panel goes???

Looks like an engine bay splash panel that may go between the engine and frame.

While I am waiting on the customer to pick up the 48 Chrysler, I am working on my 50 Crosley tow truck.  The gas in the tank (1/4 keg) was over 8 years old and stanky.  What I can't figure out is why the gas was green?  Was it the alcohol in the gas, or it reacting with the stainless steel keg???

I cleaned it out and found rust in the stainless steel tank????  Turns out it was the filler neck.  So I coated it with sealer and decided to paint the outside of the filler neck.  While I was at it I prepped and painted the door top interior pieces.  Now to get it together and drive it some.

I have also sold one of my Crosleys to a Crosley club member so now I am down to 7 Crosleys.  But that doesn't mean I have less cars as my dad passed away in March and I got one of his cars that he had left.

The 48 Chrysler has went back to it's owner and now I am working on my daughter's car that she bought from my dad's estate.

1987 Lincoln Mark VIII Bill Blass Edition.  Body wise it is in great condition, no rust and paint is good.  The problem with it is it needs a digital dash and they seem to be hard to find.  I might even consider getting this one rebuild, but I can't even find anyone to work on them, any help????

Had a wonderful father's day weekend, our museum had a car cruise on Friday, went to the Cool Springs Power Museum on Saturday and on Sunday went to a car show in Oakmont Pa.  Didn't get any pictures Friday or Saturday, but took several on Sunday.

Was a beautiful day on Sunday and lots of cars and kids.  Love to let them sit in the Crosley Hot Shot.  Puts a smile on their face and when I tell them to toot the horn they love it!

I have a lot of little projects that need done, one is the wheel cylinders on the 1951 Crosley wagon.  This was my first car that I bought in 1978, even before I had a driver's license.  I restored it back then and then about 20 years ago I restored it again, more to original than the first time.  I never really drove it after that, in fact I never finished the interior, which I plan to do now.

So today I moved it out where I can work on it and jacked up the rear end and removed the rear wheels and drums.  One shoe has a missing piece and will need replaced.  I bought new wheel cylinders and master cylinder last year at the National Crosley meet so I have most of what I will need to make this a quick job, after my vacation!

Yesterday and today's job was changing out a faulty generator on the Farm O Road.  I will be taking it to the Crosley Nationals next week and the generator was not charging.  It is tougher to get out than most other Crosleys but it is now changed out and working properly.  I took the generator off of the Crosley tow truck as I knew it was a good one.  Lol. That's what it gets for acting up and putting the fan blades through the radiator!

Another item from my dad's estate is retrieved and getting a little repair.  It is a Fry model 17M, not sure what the M stands for.  It was restored several years ago and needs a few things to get it looking better.  I do have the globe, a "DINO" brand, and the new base for the globe.  I also have the gallon markers, brass tags for manufacture and patents, the hose and nozzle.  One of the things I am not sure of is the unit in the glass that says car on it?  What is the hook under it for and why does it say car?  Some of the things I want to do to it is, fix the cut off handle for the gallons desired, install the pump in it and make a handle for it, and wire it for a light and clean it up some.

Back from the Crosley Nationals with more hardware for the Farm O Road, a Winners Circle Award.

Getting some work done on my very first car, the 1951 Super wagon.  I want to get it on the road again and it has been neglected for several years in the back room.  Last year I bought new wheel cylinders and they are now on an in the process of being bled.  I also pulled the plug from the fuel tank and it was dry, I might have drained it years ago?  I flushed it with some lacquer thinner and things came out clear.  Rain some gas through the tank and then put the plug in and put some fresh gas in it.  Had to clean the points and a few other things but it fired up and sounds pretty good.  Will have to top off the antifreeze and change the oil, but it is alive again.

Hopefully it will be cruising the valley soon.

Keiser31,

That truck and the prewar car belong to a wonderful lady Martha Straube, that has been to the Nationals twice in Wauseon Ohio.  Said this year it cost over $2000 in fuel to make the trip!  This year she brought the gentleman that did the restoration on them, Kenny Bush.

She also has a Crosley Station wagon.

My 1951 Crosley Super station wagon made it out into the sunlight under it's own power for the first time in years.  New wheel cylinders, master cylinder and hoses, and fresh gas and away it goes!  This was my first vehicle that I bought in 1978, my dad asked me if I wanted an old car and I said yes.  He said he knew a guy that had a Crosley, but they weren't much of a car, but if I wanted we could go look at it.  44 years later I still own it, plus several others!!!  Been restored twice, well almost, got to finish the interior and a few other things.

Was good to drive it around the lot today!

Yesterday our car club was doing a display at a local assisted living house and I wanted to take my 1958 Lincoln Continental convertible to the display.

I got the car out from it's storage area and drove it to my place, about 5 miles away.  As I was parking the car behind our house a loud bang along with the front drivers side of the car dropping to the ground was heard and felt.  I got out to find the front wheel at a very funny angle.  Upon inspection I found the lower ball joint broke off.  The front of the car was still out in the alley and the neighbors and I worked to jack it up and move the 2.5 ton car off the gravel alley.  Didn't move it far but enough to let cars go by.

Took my Mustang to the display and thought of what I would do when I got back home.  I decided to remove the ball joint and try to weld it back together.  The ball joint came out fairly easy and it looked as though it was cast steel and could be welded.  Out to my shop and got the Mig welder fired up and welded the joint back together.  The back home to put it in loosely.  Sat it down nice and easy and fired it up and backed it close to the garage where it will wait for a ball joint!  Hope the one I ordered is correct!!!

I got the wheels back from the sand blaster and today started to powder coat them.  I got the back sides and beads done, now I have to get the paint out to do the front side, four will be off white and four will be gray(I think?).  Then I will also have some spares.

I also got the new ball Joint in the mail yesterday and put it in last night, a pretty easy job since I just put the repaired joint in loosely.  Now it is at my shop and will receive a good going over.  I did take a quick look at the other ball joint on the passenger side last night and it looked okay.  Just in case I ordered a replacement to have just in case.

Also got the wood all ready for the car cruise that our car club has every year.  If you are in the area of Vandergrift, PA stop in to our car cruise on August 6th from 4-8.  We will take a picture of your car in front of a 50's diner and put it in the plaque and present it to you at the end of the cruise.

Today I painted the front side of whe wheels that will go on the 1950 wagon.  They will get new tires tomorrow and then put on.

Still debating on what color to paint the wheels for the wife's car, gray metallic or white?  What do you think?  It has gray metallic splash pans, panel under windshield, dash, and gray interior.

Went to a car show sponsored by the local Lions club yesterday.  I took the Crosley Hotshot and my wife brought the 66 Mustang.  Had a good time with friends.  The weather could have been better but that's okay.  Lots of interest in the Hotshot.  I got a lot of laughs from the windshield card, as I always answer the Question "Engine" with YES, and lately I have be filling out the section for "Special Features" buy putting "Americas First Sports Car", and look what parked next to me!  LOL

Today I painted the Super Sports wheels.  I am not sure I like them gray, but we will see once I mount the tires and put them on.  I can always repaint them.  Might also try putting a pink stripe on the wheel???

If you allow, I would paint them with a finer metallic content. I had a similar issue when I tried to paint some elements for my Mark II model: the paint which was available had large aluminum particles, I was not at all please with that. Finally, I let mix some cans with the finer metallic available.

Roger,

The wheel paint will match the paint on the pebble shields, panel under windshield, and dash on my wife's pink Crosley Super Sports.

Last week I got the rebuilt dash cluster for my daughter's 1987 Lincoln Mark VII that my dad owned.  Was so nice to see it light up the way it was supposed to, just wish we would have found this guy 2 years ago when the dash went out.  Dad would have been so happy!

Took it to lunch yesterday and when the wife and I went to leave it started up and I backed out of the parking spot and it stalled, tried restarting it to no avail.  We pushed it back into the spot and I checked to see if I could hear the fuel pump running, which I could.  Next thing I checked was spark, which it didn't have.  Thought maybe the coil went, then started looking around and saw the ignition module on the side of the distributor and the lightbulb came on in my head, those go out all the time.

The wife and I got a ride home and I got a new module from the auto and went back and removed the distributor and replaced the module and it fired right up.  Twenty minute job in Wendy's parking lot.  Now I am putting new plugs and wires on it.  Should be good to go after that.

Today I worked some on the 58 Lincoln, the brakes were a little bit iffy, ok a lot iffy!  So I ordered new front wheel cylinders and replaced them, the rears had been replaced a few years ago.  The front hoses were new a few years ago. Once I put it together the brakes were still not right so I jacked up the rear and as I suspected they were locked up, hoses had collapsed.   After a long search, the two rear hoses were located.  One from the rear body area to the swing arm and another hose to the tee block on the axle.  They are now on and all that is needed is final bleeding of all four wheels and then drive it.

On the Crosley front, I talked to a gentleman at a car show that will put the vinyl decal on the 1951 wagon,  I have only had the decals for 15-20 years, so I think it is time.

After a long delay, I finally got the basket weave decal installed on the 1951 Crosley wagon.  Several years ago, 15?, the decals were reproduced through one of the Crosley venders and I bought a set that first year at the National Meet.  They have been laying around, mostly on top of the wagon waiting for me to put them on.  A few weeks ago at a car show I was talking to a gentleman about the decals and he said he would put them on for me.  He had done many decals and knows how to do them.  He is also a great airbrush painter!  Well he came out and I showed him what I had and he took the decals and the paper templates. Yesterday he came out with the templates cut out to check how they fit before he cut out the decals.  They fit good and today he came out with the ready to install decals and in about one hour had them installed.  I am so happy that they are on!  Now to finish the interior and get it to some shows.

And yesterday I was adding transmission fluid to the 58 Lincoln and heard a bearing noise at the front of the engine.  Checked the water pump and yep it is bad.  I am in the process of removing it, four mounting bolts and related hoses so not too bad.  Ordered a new pump from Kanter Auto Parts, good people to deal with!

Water pump on 1958 Lincoln is off, now some cleaning and wait for the new pump to arrive. Also have to do a little radiator repair. Oops!

Does anyone know the correct color of a 1958 Lincoln Continental 430 engine???
