John_S_in_Penna
I don't know myself, Edwin, but I wonder: Did Chevrolet have certain pre-determined color combinations? Could a buyer get ANY two paint colors of his choosing as a 2-tone-- and if so, was that a special order, or readily available? I'll be interested, too, to see what the Chevrolet experts can tell. It sounds like you have a car you're going to repaint.
keiser31
Check out Autocolor.com to see the factory color names and examples. The examples are not always as vivid as they should be, but the names of the colors may help your research.
auburnseeker
I just sold a 1954 Chevy showroom color and Upholstery book. That would have really been nice to have for you to use to decide from. I might be getting another one in, but I haven't received the last lot of literature I bought from a closed Chevy dealership. (it's in transit) To know exactly what's in it. The revised engine saw a slight performance increase. A new model was introduced, the Beauville-a townsman wagon, and offered 6-passenger seating with four doors and featured woodgrain trim around the side windows. John_S_in_Penna
Interesting, Helfen! Those color chips are helpful. I suspect that, of those 30 colors on the Ditzler sheet, maybe half of them were available on the regular Chevy car line. Do we know which ones? And if someone has references that show combinations specifically for the Bel Air he asks about, I'm sure Edwin will appreciate any further help our experts can provide. Vila
Edwin You probably knew this, but a google image search of "1954 Chevrolet" and then clicking on the "Convertible" tab shows all the two tone combinations only had the second color in a small area on the rear fenders surrounded with chrome/stainless trim for the Belair Convertible. For the other Belair body style it appears the top and the small area on the rear fenders appear to be one color and the remainder of the car the other for the two tone cars. A Google image search of "1954 Chevrolet Belair Brochure" shows some factory brochure images with many original color combinations. Helfen's images look like they may have come from www.autocolorlibrary.com I have bought paint from them for two antique restorations and both colors were a perfect match to the original colors I found in hidden locations on the vehicles. One was for my 1962 Triumph TR4 and the other was my 1964 Vespa scooter. They didn't even have the Vespa color chips listed on there website, but I called them and they had the original chips and paint codes to mix the paint. Hudsy Wudsy
You might also enjoy just browsing pictures of a few actual '54 Chevys. Sometimes it's nice to see the real thing when looking at chip charts: https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1280&bih=609&q=1954+Chevrolet&oq=1954+Chevrolet&gs_l=img.3..0l10.1694.7128.0.7534.14.9.0.5.5.0.299.1292.2j6j1.9.0....0...1ac.1.64.img..0.14.1349.OVIgzCPOh4c#hl=en&tbm=isch&q=1954+chevrolet+convertible ps Pictures of '53 model may also show some of the same paint examples. John_S_in_Penna
The A.A.C.A. Library in Hershey, Pennsylvania likely has all the references materials needed, and they may be able to answer your question, Edwin. Their telephone is (717) 534-2082. A.A.C.A. members get a certain number of hours of research free with their membership. The library probably can help non-members, but may charge for their research time. 8E45E
Since the Chevrolet line in general was VERY popular with fleet buyers, one can imagine the amount that were ordered in exclusive colors, including Bell System Green, Bell System Blue, railroad colors, GSA colors; not to mention, taxicab colors, etc. Craig
