Earl B.
How many sombreros are used to help hold up the insulation? I think 2.... Am I right? thanks, Earl
buick5563
Two sombreros per rod.One on each end.
Earl B.
The front rod that hooks onto the hood ornament, each end has a O on each end to hold the sombrero. The back rod, each end hooks into the hood.... Where do the sombreros go on that rod... it's just a long curve. The parts car had them only on the front rod.....Mike, thanks for the help. buick5563
Earl,I don't know if that is correct for a big series car, but on the small series there are "circles" on both rods as well.
bhambulldog
I think it may depend on which assembly plant the car was put together.I've seen large series with four sombreros And like Earl B's car , mine has a curved rear rod that returns into the side of the hood. Only sombreros on the front rod(Mine is actually sans sombreros at the moment)

buick5563
The repros are plastic. They look ok. Better than the beat up originals, but not accurate in the truest sense.I ordered some for my convertible.
Earl B.
The originals are paper. They were still on the parts car I have. When I tried to pull them off of the insulation, they tore apart.

Paul Falabella
Got the repro sombreros, need the rods. Are they produced? Can they be made? What size rod works?
Bhigdog
My local trim shop has lengths of spring tempered steel rod used for seat springs repair. Pretty easy to cut to length and form a loop in the ends. Close is good enough. Annealing the ends will help the bending.............Bob

buick840
3 1/2 OD for anybody else who wants to try:Seems like something that could be made out of a light metal metal like copper?Yes I know that's not original but paint it and it would look fine....wonder why they made them of cardboard or what ever you wish to call it........couldn't have cost much more for a better material
buick5563
Copper would be cool.Ooh, ooh...then polish em!
buick5563
The 1956 used layered Masonite riveted together. Maybe late 55's did too. I know I have the riveted version on my 55, because I couldn't find enough good ones when I was restoring the car. That would be an easy thing for Bhigdog to do. That doesn't sound like something a car company would do. Way easier/better/cheaper ways for them to skin that cat. I'll press on with the pressed paper version, as lame as they are. Pretty sure I have the tooling/dies figured out in my head. I'll most likely spend a week and end up making a few sets. I had a guy who GAVE me some unobtainium Chrysler tail lite lenses ask if I had any 56 Chrysler windshield trim clips he desperately needed. Pretty complicated clip, also unobtainium. I spent a full week making the tooling and making 12 of them for him. Good Karma all around...........Bob Edited September 7, 2014 by Bhigdog (see edit history)
JohnD1956
Here are pictures of the 56 Sombreros:The center, shown in the last picture is made of three layers of the material and is 3/8th of an inch tall.
Bhigdog
Thanks John. those are obviously factory made. I saw them on a car once and thought they were home made. No accounting for what GM would do back in the day...............Bob
JohnD1956
LOL.. Was cleaning out my shed today in prep for removal pending the new shed, and found my spare pair, just where I left them, on the underside of my spare hood. And discovered that the center bracket on the front rod is not attached to the hood ornament after all. It is attached separately to the hood such that the bolt head is hidden under the body of the jet hood ornament. It really pays to leave as much stuff together as possible, for a future model of how it was assembled.
