  1. Sometimes ... I take a chance & everything turns out great .... I picked up a 1929 Model A 150 Woody wagon a few weeks ago from Job in Guilford, CT. He had been following me for years on one of the Ford Forums I belong to & decided when the time came to move cross country he would give me a call. When I pulled up to load out - the first thing Job's wife did was invite me to dinner. I loaded up the Woody & a Subaru wagon along with some vinyl green house framing which filled up the trailer. Then we sat down to dinner. Home made tacos that were just delicious ... I learned over dinner about the Woody's history. This Woody Wagon had significant family value. It had been in the family for over 45 years. 35 years with Job's sister - 10 plus years with Job. When he got it - the wagon body was severely rotted & covered over with plywood - the engine was full of water & the block had cracked. Job - bought a used engine & then spent years doing a frame off amateur restoration. About (5) years ago he had it running - then it quit. It had electrical issues. I thanked them & was off on the road. I had a Stanley Steamer engine to drop off near Philadelphia, PA at my good friend Louis Mandich who owns Last Chance Garage. The last few miles to Louie's place always give me peaceful contemplation about Life in general - I very much enjoy being able to see him. I got there early before he opened on a Monday morning. I unloaded the engine - Lou arrived - I had a thought. I asked Lou to look at the Model A Woody to see if he could figure out why it did not run ... Fred - one of his crackerjack mechanics - spent some time while I was there. The news was not good - all the wiring needed to be straightened out - it was a " Fuster Cluck ". So - I made the call to get it running. It seemed the right thing to do. Well .... It cost more than Lou & I both thought but when I arrived yesterday in Hadlock, WA it was running like a Swiss Watch .... Kris was there to meet me - Job's son. And I was treated to another family dinner courtesy of Kris & his lovely wife. Job was both ecstatic & grateful about my gift to the family in getting the car running. He could not believe someone would do something so generous. But - going thru Life it is appropriate to " Give Back " on occasion. Well - back to driving .... Jim
  2. I would call AAA for a tow for both ...... Jim
  3. Last Chance Garage in Unionville, PA just outside Philadelphia ... Louis " Louie " Mandich does quality restorations at affordable prices. An AACA Member for many years and an award winner .... http://lastchancegarage.net/ Jim
  4. Hire an experienced local professional with an enclosed trailer. Spend a relative small. amount of money - save a relatively large amount of potential damage. Jim
  5. This is a case where it appears a civil lawsuit is justified & necessary. The initial stop & investigative detention might be warranted, but the unlawful detention & subsequent arrest were unreasonable. Jim
  6. Visit Louie if you need restoration work done in the Philadelphia, PA area .... Jim
  7. Call Lou Mandich at Last Chance Garage in Unionville, PA ... I created a thread on him: @ Jim
  8. I am leaving Stanford, KY around 1 p.m. today & will be driving the I-75 corridor south to Miami, FL. Here is my route @ http://mapq.st/1pBiN5I If anyone wants to see the trailer along my route - give me a call. Jim
  9. I bought this a few weeks ago to use while my custom built enclosed car hauler trailer was being repaired. 10. Unless the vehicle has significant historical - family - monetary value that is not cost effective. Most vehicles enter Alaska from the Seattle Port which is expensive. Jim
  11. They " disappeared " when the forum format changed - I put them back .... Jim
  12. " When you use your car trailer half a dozen times a year, annual inspection seems ridiculous. " Ever seen a trailer have a wheel come off going down the road ? Ever been HIT by a wheel coming off a trailer going down the road ? Most folks do not check their trailers before they hook up & tow away. It should not have to be a state requirement to exercise responsibility for the safety of others on the road. Jim
  13. If you need a minimum of 7 feet of door clearance to load - add 6 inches to that. As others have stated - interior height will be at least 6 inches taller than door height because of rear frame header. Jim
  14. I transport every day. I have owned (4) enclosed trailers. (3) have been made by Arising Industries in Fitzgerald, GA. All of them were bought from Tim Woods at Colony Cargo Trailers - also in Fitzgerald, GA. What I have learned: Install an electric winch - winch your vehicle on & off - no need for an escape door. If possible - order straight - not drop - axles .... This will increase trailer deck height & clearance so you do not bottom out. Spring axles can be serviced - springs can be replaced. Torsion axles are non repairable & must be relaced when they fail. Get a rear door w/ minimum 78 inch clearance. I opt for barn doors over ramp doors - wider rear opening - more versatility. Extended tongue will allow for tighter turns without damaging trailer or tow vehicle. My enclosed car hauler trailers have side barn doors as well. My current custom one is my largest - 34 feet enclosed w/ 8 ft. rear door clearance. Currently it is at the manufacturer for repairs after I was rear ended by a hit & run driver. So - I am presently using a 24 ft. car hauler I had to buy stock off Tim's lot. Jim
  15. My favorite vehicle in Skip's personal collection is this 1915 Apperson Jack Rabbit ... Skip followed this car for years before he was able to buy it. It is an original un restored survivor - perhaps the only complete surviving example of this model. Enjoy! Jim
  16. The real bonus for me in traveling the country are the places & people I get to meet along the way ... Sunday I was fortunate to visit Skip Seaton in New Salem, PA at his restoration shop & take some pictures. Skip is a lifetime member of the AACA along with: The MTFCA & MTFCI The Studebaker Driver's Club The Horseless Carriage Club The Nash Car Club of America The Hudson-Essex Terraplane Club The Veteran Motor Car Club of America The Model A Restorer's Club He had (4) Model T cars undergoing restoration when I visited ... Enjoy ! Jim
  17. Your opinion is based on ???? Some folks thought K & N air filters were " Snake Oil " when they first came out .... Easy to criticize what you don't understand ... I did my homework on independent oil test data I found to be sound & in the process found a link to an obscure oil additive company in Wisconsin that has been around for years ... I called & spoke with the owner Dan before I ordered. I am receiving no compensation of any type for posting. Just sharing firsthand experience with a product that actually works for me. For those interested - there is additional technical information located here which also includeds test data from K & N Engineering @ http://www.oilextreme.com/tech1.html Jim
  18. I am on the road just about every day. I drive an F350 CC Dually w/ a 7.3 PSD & a manual ZF five speed tranny - usually I am towing 10,000 pounds. I have tried oil additives over the years along with several brands and oil weight combinations. Recently I ran across independent oil testing data performed & published by an individual: @ https://540ratblog.wordpress.com/ Although lengthy & arduous it was fascinating to read. The oil additive that consistently seemed to have proven measured results was Oil Extreme: @ http://www.oilextreme.com/oil1.html I called & talked with the owner Dan - then ordered a 16 ounce bottle. For my truck I chose this oil from the test data link above: 113. 5W40 MOBIL 1 TURBO DIESEL TRUCK synthetic, API CJ-4, CI-4 Plus, CI-4, CH-4 and ACEA E7 = 74,312 psi zinc = 1211 ppm phos = 1168 ppm moly = 2 ppm I have been running Mobil 1 synthetic oil filters since they came out a couple years ago. My engine takes 15 quarts so I added the recommended 15 ounces. Then I drove a few hundred miles .... I noticed an immediate gain in horsepower - fuel economy - performance. I will be adding Oil Extreme to my ZF manual transmission & my 4:10 rear differential. Jim
  19. You need to hire someone based in either of those locations to do a turn around trip. The least amount of unloaded miles required will equal or exceed the loaded miles. Your 400 mile haul is in reality an 800 mile or longer haul. Jim
  20. Seriously doubt that is legal. An enclosed trailer does not have anchor points suitable to secure that weight, particularly to keep it from shifting. That haul probably racked the box & pretty much destroyed the trailer. Jim
  21. Due to the terrible conditions the roads are in that I drive every day .... I expect you will see more aluminum trailers in the shop like I see them by the side of the road ..... Nothing beats a full perimeter steel tube frame trailer in taking a daily beating on what I traverse year round ... Jim
  22. Since 2008 on the AACA On my enclosed trailer now headed to Ft. Worth, TX .... Jim
  23. Today I swept out inside the trailer ... I was not feeling that well afterwards & had a metallic taste in my mouth. I knew the wood tanks held residue of what was sprayed going back to the 1920's up until 1948 when they were retired, I believe there is arsenic (among other things) in the tanks .... Gonna air out the trailer overnight .... Freighter Jim
