  1. HEMMINGS SEEMS TO BE OLD NEWS. I BOUGHT MY CAR THERE IN 1975, THAT WAS THE LAST CENTURY..NOW HMN IS AN AUCTION RAG FULL OF ADS FOR CAR LIFTS.. BUT SEEMS TO ME HOT RODS HAVE TAKEN OVER ..CLOSED CARS AND 4DOORS BETTER HAVE A CRATE MOTOR TO SELL.. I JUST DONT SEE MANY FOLKS PILING IN A FORDOOR ON A HOT SUMMER DAY FOR ANYTHING.. THEY WANT CD'S, AC AND DRAG PERFORMANCE..NOT THE CHALLENGE OF 70 YEAR OLD ENGINEERING... HOPE YOUR NOT IN IT FOR THE $$$$
  2. I dont think i would do another, although if I had that six figure resource, oh yea..make it perfecto
  3. Dont worry just yet,,, The vac cylinder has to be functional..(test with compressed air if nec) I always engage mine at low 30-50 and always light load.. remember that vacuum power is greatest after accelerating.First gear is ok..but the torque load in second is less..the momenntum is there, car is rolling a good speed..pull the knob, foot off the gas..press the clutch..ease into 3rd gear..if you floor it it will ratchet in the rear or get stuck inbetween..(like u saw). I always go easy getting the freeway..I want to safely get on at speed so some times shift from 3rd at about 70..nice and quiet, then oops your doin eighty..I have found the beauty of this car on smooth highway in od to run in the fast lane.. I most always shift 1-2 then od then 3 and kinda get on highway easy....be carefull when down shifting..you must be moving..i like to as I coast up an on ramp push knob in..declutch shift to neutral..maybe ease back into 3rd to be sure it locked as u stop.. I put synthetic 140 in my columbia after years of fossil 8090..be real sure u fill to the full mark..columbia unit adds fill volume.. If you find yourself in a no move situation again..cycle the switch or rev engine , release throttle let surge of vac kick ..remember to easy and smooth..then go pass lots of cars... blah blah blah I know...just shift your columbia while moving easy, cheers...
  4. I HAVE WHELIHANS HIGH VOLUME PUMP ..LARGER GEARS AND PUMP BODY. I HAVE TO SAY IT HAS BEEN GREAT..
  5. YOU GUYS ARE IMPRESSIVE....HEY PHIL, TELL THAT DUDE ABOUT YOUR MUSTANG..HE WANTS TO PARK HIS 66 AND DRIVE A CHEVY CORSICA (EEK)CAUS A MUSTANG CANT DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY IN CA....???? I DRIVE MY 67 PONTIAC ON THE HIGHWAY IN OHIO 10S OF THOUSANDS OF MILES ..AND IF A GM CAN DO IT....AND A ZEPHYR CAN DO IT..CANT A MUSTANG??
  6. 2 bolts throught the starter into the oil pan...1 has a little bracket that also is secured to oil pan.
  7. wow only "invested" 100000 and 6 years of time... those guys on the west coast get'em done in 6 days and always make money......and get on tv!!
  8. ok, I just wonder..by the limited number of actual participants in this forum ..how many work on their own car..I dont want the master machinist to lecture me again because he is an M.I.T. grad with his own metalurgy lab and machine shop......I mean the rest of you. I understand machine shops bore and build engines..upholstry shops sew tops and seats...but..all the in between.. The harley guy that says he likes to work on stuff, but wants leads for a restoration shop ?? Boz has to be writing a fat one to Mr Colorite.. I loved that 41 z conv mentioned in the post below, ebay..how much...invested sold for 69.....?? ""This is a very rare 1941 Lincoln Zephyr Convertible Coupe that has been restored to show quality condition. It is one of 20 known survivors of this Zephyr model and body style as registered in the directory of the Lincoln-Zephyr Owners Club. This car is the 52nd of 725 total convertible coupes produced in 1941. Over $100,000 in restoration costs over a period of six years has resulted in the magnificent automobile"" Do you paint?? weld?? home in the garage?? is it a hobby or an investment like the guys in oil futures?? I guess the word is passion. Passion to tinker and fix something that is inop...passion to understand the old school of engineering... by the way ..what happened to Mr.Rolf? (old school) this forum just isnt the same without him..
  9. NOW IT IS FUN... I TOOK PHOTOS THE DAY I HOOKED UP POWER..LIGHTS ETC..YOU KNOW, THAT CHROME YOU HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT ALL THOSE YEARS..FINALLY BOLTED IN PLACE KINDA GIVES YOU A SECOND WIND....

  12. if it has dexcool, red mucky coolant..figure a radiator ..intake gaskets and waterpump... with all those cars in your stable..why the heck not drive the 66 mustang?? common ..cheap reliable and u own it..why waste money on a poorly built worn out car...why not improve what u have??? or is the mustang a bigblock shelby million dollar machine???
  13. why look at that, they don't melt in the rain after all...
  14. HERE WE GO..."OH NO SUCH A RARE CAR" ETC... DO YOU ALL THINK THAT THIS IS SUCH A GREAT BODY STYLE?? I DONT GET IT..UGLY AS A FORDOR BUT HARDER TO GET IN AND OUT OF THE BACK SEAT. (AS IF IT WAS USED FOR TRANSPORTATION)
  15. OR REMOVE THE FUEL PUMP AND CLIMB UP IN..STRADLE ENGINE..THE CROSS MEMBER MAKE GREAT FOOTHOLD TO STAND ON. CAP IS REMOVED AND INSIDE IS A LITTLE BRASS "PLUG" THING THAT IS AN ORFICE TO LIMIT PRESSURE TO LIFTER GALLEYS....IN THE FRONT IS A BALL AND SPRING THAT DETERMINES PRESSURE...AND CANNOT BE SEEN WITHOUT MANIFOLD REMOVAL. THE BALL IN FRONT ACTS LIKE THE SOAKER HOSE IN YOUR GARDEN REMOVE THE END CAP NO PRESSURE.....TAKE IT OUT OR LESSEN THE TENSION...PRESSURE RUNS OUT THE END AND ONTO TIMING GEAR....HIGHER TENSION AND LIFTERS STAY PUMPED AND LESS FOR THE T GEARS... LOOK FOR A FORD SERVICE BOOK OR V-12 GUIDE..OR MAYBE PHIL WILL SCAN A PIC. THERE IS A GREAT ILLUSTRATION IN THE LITERATURE OF THE OIL PATH FROM THE PUMP TO GALLEYS AND FILTER...HELPS TROUBLE SHOOT..
  16. ANY SPARK?? DID YOU REMEMBER TO PULL IGN OUT TO TURN ON SPARK..KEY TURN ALONE NOT ENOUGH..ARE YOU SURE?? WAS IT FLOODED.??. START BY PULLING A PLUG, I BET IT IS SOAKED..IF NOT LOOK IN THE CARB MOVE THE THROTTLE GAS SHOULD BE ALL OVER VERY FRESH AND FRAGRENT..FUEL PUMP BOWL FULL?? .YOU GOT TO GET A FEEL FOR YOUR MACHINE. I HAVE FLOODED MINE ON OCCASION, AND I DRIVE IT ALL THE TIME...AND THEN A STEADY FLOORED GAS PEDAL AND 10 SEC CRANK USUALLY CLEAN IT OUT... CARS THEN, ARE NOT LIKE NOW..NEW CARS TURN ON LIKE A LIGHT SWITCH...OLD CARS HAVE CARBS THAT MUST FILL..OR CAN FLOOD...MANUAL CHOKE LEVERS TO PULL.. MOST FOLKS ARE OUT OF PRACTICE...CHK AND LET US KNOW.

  21. I AM TICKLED TO DEATH OVER SUCCESS.....AND AM A HOBBY MECHANIC,..YES RESTORING CARS IS COOL... ARE U GONNA CHROME UR OWN STUFF TOO???? AND SEW YOUR OWN TOP...MORE POWER TO YOU...I READ THIS AS U SEE, AND I BEG TO DIFFER...ASK MR BOZ, HOW MANY OF YOU EVEN PAINT YOUR OWN CARS??? YEA RIGHT... C'MON WOULD YOU BUILD A MASERATI OR MULTIPLE CAM FERRARI?? MY EXPERIENCE OVER 30 YEARS OF BEING A KID, CUTTING LAWNS AND SHOVELING DRIVES TO FINANCE A HOBBY..I LEARNED THE HARD WAY...THERE IS MORE TO ENGINE BUILDING THAN THE AVERAGE PART TIME RESTORER HAS TIME OR RESOURCES FOR. PEACE AND GOOD LUCK..
  22. I HAVE INTERVIEWED PERHAPS A HUNDRED MEN/BOYS FOR MECHANIC /TECH POSITIONS. I HAVE USUALLY NOT HIRED THE GUYS WHO BRAG ABOUT BUILDING ENGINES, UNLESS THAT MEANS MACHINIST IN AN ENGINE FACILITY. ANY EXPERIENCED SHOP MECHANIC / TECHNICION KNOWS THAT HE DOESNT HAVE THESE RESOURCES AND WILL SUBLET MACHINE WORK TO MACHINISTS. SORT OF LIKE PRACTICING SURGERY..ANYONE CAN SEW... I FIXED V-12S FOR YEARS AS EDUCATED PART TIME ENGINE BUILDER..PLASTIC GUAGE AND ALL..MY PONTIACS DID FINE..MY V-12S NEVER LASTED 5000 MILES. I FOUND A FLEET SHOP, SMALL TOWN NEAR HERE..SPENT 1500 IN LABOR FOR MACHINE SERVICE, FITTING AND ASSEMBLING.. I NOW CAN DO 60 IN 2ND GEAR... I WAS ASHAMED TO "PAY" SOMEONE FOR WHAT IS A HOBBY, BUT I HAVE LEARNED THAT THIS IS VERY PRECISE WORK THAT ONLY EXPERIENCE AND MACHINE SHOP RESOURCES WILL SUCCEED. I SAY THAT BECAUSE PARTS ARE SCARCE AND PRICEY. HARTS MOTOR SERVICE IN CECIL OHIO..(SMALL AD FOR CLASSIC CAM GRINDING IN HMN) RANDY IS THE BEST
  23. SAY HOT ROD DREAMS..SCRAPE OR I'LL RESTO ROD IT AND SELL ON BARRETT JACKSON FOR A MIL DUDE
