1. ""Everyone has them in the automotive dept (K-mart, Wal-mart, eBay). Sometimes they are packaged in two's "" You guys snubbed me as I tried to help last time ..maybe "simply concocted" will chime in..just cut and trim c'mon anything can work.....they're just wires tin ears and all ..... have bought speakers for two of my Lincolns at Radio Shack for about $10. to $12 . each. I may have a tin ear, but they sound alright to me whats that song..now I know how Rolf feels... Well, when ya'll get it sorted out, lemme know. Dont worry, I'm outta here.
2. My recone last year was about 50 bucks..no big deal, it's not an exotic poly dual cone http://www.thespeakershop.com/home/speakerrepair.html simple 8" paper cone.....not rocket science, field coil was good..compared to what I read here folks spend big money to jim roll for tops and interior..spagnolo for paint..boos/ herril for anything..moglia 75 bucks for a little knob..or $25 x 24 for hyd lifters...chrome plating....seems a bargain.. "for sale lincoln 75000 invested will sell for 45000" sorry to offend you. I read this forum, and it seems as though not too many of you are scraping to get by. ....speaker is pretty cheap.. i did try a cobble job radio shack speaker (sorry, Im not a walmart type)..it was a cobble job, if you have the time to do the job..do it right the first time..and be done. I too thought it could work..I am learning as I go, and just offering help to others
3. no no no..that is so wrong. yes they can be reconed, no one makes one 8" or so, shallow bowl to fit..this was a high quality unit with good sound, deep bass and clear highs..(for a single speaker set) google speaker reconing..4" would be very dissapointing... i used a place in ohio..there is a good place in mi, jackson speaker co or something... i gotta find an fm converter..nothing hardly on am worth listening too, 'cept sports..and the indians and tigers both are pathetic..mudhens following right behind. who did your fm thing??
4. I just replaced the 70 year old locktals in my philco made roto selector lincoln zephyr radio.. I replaced the capacitors (condensers if u like) awhile ago, and installed a solid state vibrator from a fla radio shop..tubes had tested ok..but big difference. I think it's pretty cool to listen to the ball game in the car..riding around.... Our cars use 7 volt lock style short glass tubes...the zeniths and philcos ..7b6, 7a7,7a7,7y4,7b8,7c5,7c5..mostly...try "tubes and more.com" antique electronics out of tempe az..these nos tubes are on sale a couple bucks each..still common but havent been made for years... anybody here fool with radios?? does your lincoln radio work?? I wish the 40 had the foot button..soooooo cool to switch stations with your foot !!!
5. yea right, say dexcool and plastic intake gaskets.. maint items..every gm car has to have intake resealed every few years..oh boy.. not to mention the bone head greedy techs selling head gaskets instead.. google gm dexcool class action..
6. did they mention dexcool antifreeze or the fact that the poorly designed "plastic /rubber" intake gaskets have made gm cars ticking time bombs..better to buy any other make than a 4-10 year old gm car... yes I drive a pontiac, always have. makes me sad to see what is happening, like a cancer patient you just cant help....
7. HOW BOUT CHANGE TRANS..ADD AOD AUTOMATIC..THAT IS A LITTLE MORE PRACTICAL... DO U DRIVE IT THAT MUCH TOO WORRY ABOUT MPG??
8. what?? have u benn working on points without dist dissassembly...?? like centrifical advance..vac brake etc.. hey coke..was your car running??
9. jake cleans out old tar only...i have one it works..but i'm not sure the point...skip inserts modern new coils in old shell night and day diff...spark like a modern 12 electronic car.. really u gotta see to believe my car does mph 80 easy on non od high gear..no strain..
10. well??? what did u find?? any luck..I would park that sled and drive the '48 for sure....
11. Easy is like a 60's gm car with a uniset..and a window in the cap to set dwell..these are not easy. I am not an expert but....obviously unscrew and reattatch new parts..clean up as nec everthing..make certain the points address each other flat and flush when closing..bend if nec... put mech back in case and adjust point gap on tip of lobe. both sides..double check fool around and recheck a couple times..the hard part (for me) is reaching in that housing and setting em. Now you have to set synch screw..(the mystery screw beneath the side plate base timing setting screw) put in box and mail to jake flemming in texas!! he will synch and time the unit....d'oh........or if u get a motors / chiltons manual from 40s/50s. there is a procedure to measure left vs right vs mounting holes and open close time...this is essential. other wise think of a twin engine boat with 2 engines running at diff speeds..your engine has in essence 2 dist systems in one box..operating independantly of one another..dialed in you can do 50+ in 2nd gear....or have a real dog....I bet Mr. Knapp can chime in with some wisdom..most older "sun" machines could do them..and maybe up there they are still around..not here..jake or skip in fla are only 2 guys I know of.... I used 2 timing lights once and adjusted to get single "flash" like a boat engine synchro..kinda fun to play with..I would rather drive than work on this thing anymore... I implore you to be certain to replace both condensers...I had no luck with nos..Earle Brown has new ones..Skip in punta gorda rebuilds coils all new guts..jake cleans? them... this dist is about the best most trouble free part on the car..do it once right, and forget it..
12. http://www.lcoc.org/documents/OVR_Meet_2008/2008ENM-Info.pdf All right gang pull off those blankets..charge that battery..please, roll down the windows and get those stinkin moth balls out (anyone under 75 put mothballs in his car? , yucch) get em running on as many cyls as poss and head to Columbus. it will be a lot of people in late model Connies but there should be a few v-12's
13. If u look at the zephyr magazine, u will discover that it looks like a publication of AARP. Most dudes my age have chevelles..gtos roadrunners etc. T's, A's and those huge museum pieces they cal "real classics" belong to the senior set with big money and trailers. Our club spends more space recalling old guys trips to Europe and other old guys standing with trophys, which is fine..to each his own....they were active drivers tinkerers 25-30 years ago. Guys my age mostly think a flathead is a fancy word for scrap iron.... Each age group seems to collect cars they grew up with..I favor big v-8 pontiacs..but I also grew up idolizing HF and EBF, so a LZ was a logical choice. My friends like these cars..."needs a crate mtr and ac!" We are seeing more lincolns out and about...but even in our club rag, our very dedicated editor has had more pictures of hot rodded lincolns than members stock cars... like Dylan said "the times are a changin" The best car show is an LZ 75 mph flying down the interstate top down..How long can you sit in a chair in the sun and stair at the back or your car?? I just wish our meets were closer...
14. Correct Lincoln top has no strap on the outside...period. Mr. Burkholders 40 is an older replacement..not "correct" either. Your car is beautiful. Your car is not "show". do you care?? The dash should be maroon, the steering wheel and plastics should be maroon.(like the window crank knobs and door panel trim).metal trim on dash gold macoid...under the hood should be painted the cars color..starter button is maroon not metal..rear bumper splash pan missing...fuel line at firewall is homemade incorrect etc...this car has obviously extensively reworked...I am not criticizing..it is awesome and well worth 65 g's. Dont get caught up with the top..it looks very nice..If you want to compete in those silly judging things...then get out your check book..but other wise..put it on ebay and be done ..here is an old snap of my top back in the last century...(yes it was also missing stuff at that time!!) I wish mine looked that nice...and if u buy a new "correct" top..I will take your old one!!
15. They called it a continental 6 ..not made by willys..willys made a hurricane 4 banger..continental motors made the sixes..they used em in the pickups also..it was an industrial use engine
16. THE VACUUM POWERED E BRAKE RELEASE SWITCH AT THE BASE OF THE STEERING COLUMN THAT RELEASES THE E BRAKE WHEN SHIFTING INTO GEAR HAS FAILED...THEY ALL DO.. ELIMINATE IT UNTIL U GET A NEW ONE..WITH A SIMPLE PLUG OR UNION IN THE VAC LINE IN PLACE OF THE SWITCH... NON ESSENTIAL GIZMO PRONE TO FAILURE..
17. EXCELLENT, I WAS THERE, BUT NOT ENTERED IN LCOC, BUT I NEEDED TO PHOTO MY CAR WITH MY FRIENDS 40 CAB, SO I DROVE IT UP THE HILL... A FELLOW WITH A VIDEO CAM RECORDED IT AND CURSED ME AS I MADE IT TO THE TOP, HE WAS CONCERNED THAT I WAS CRAZY I'M CERTAIN..BUT THE CAMERA WAS ROLLING AS MUCH FOR EVIDENCE AS ANYTHING ! IT WAS MY FIRST MEET, IN A 12 AFTER 20 YEARS OF WAITING.. I WAS A LITTLE FIRED UP..(MIGHT HAVE BEEN THE CC) ANY IDEA WHO MIGHT HAVE FILMED THAT EVENT..??
18. Hey gang..any of u old enough to remember the lcoc meet down in southern Ohio, Delray, Atwood lake resort..high up on the hill overlooking the water.... Ok, who went??
19. ok, i hope u have them off by now...they are iron heads, iron block...go easy but get the hammer out..rap easy you will break them loose...no fellas, I know they can be damaged..but I have never broken any and I started doing this as a clumsy kid.. I like a thin "scraper" thin metal thing ..hammer inbetween head, block..It is a slow gradual process, relative to the lenght of time they have been on..but..no big deal.. once it is a little loose.use the casting to jerk up /down..you will have to lift the firewall end too, once both are moving, wiggle wiggle wiggle up off the studs.a real pain in the .....no not that, the back. I know some dissagree but I would have that head trued/planed to clean up mating surface (unless recently done) Be sure to buy new issue felpro head gasket..with better larger hole..(search sub on this forum) good luck..(hope your back is strong) have fun, remember this is supposed to be fun!!
20. hi, your friend has an awesome car....can we see the top?? I would call vendors from zephyr club..on lzoc.org..earle brown, boos herrill..sell parts seperate
21. no matter what else u do.....get a high volume, high pressure pump from an lz vendor..I like Earle Brown..he will help you, like a friendly uncle..call him
22. Hey all, happy 4rth. crank up the 12 and go run out on the nearest country road..go furthur than u dare (c,mon u have a cell) these cars love 2 lane , no traffic cruising..top down or open all windows.....now if td and frankie start singin marie on the radio well..you will know that u have arrived in the 3rd dimension I am too young I guess but I have never seen anyone driving a lz. I think I saw a postwar conv coupe in columbus on i71..i about sh"". I think its way cool that Phil drove that connie..Mr Burdette had a bunch of diff ones...how long has it been since they were seen on the road..i have been looking since the early 70s!! I mean, was it as kids you guys saw them...I have read twotz..Mr Coleman etc..but did normal folks have these cars..tell us about that blue sedan that was down the street from your school etc......
23. I second what he said.. very poetic, good points.. i want a T also. They are plentiful and cheaper than Z's.The Z is gaining value, (thanks to hot rod set). The ww2 gen that collected T's is shrinking..simple supply and demand The clubs and there silly rules can play with themselves.until the next generation takes over these clubs, lz will be an outcast, by principle..but I have wondered for long time why most folks never heard of lz. A Zephyr was every bit as much a limted prod car as caddy...and with style..I think EBF styling wasnt gaudy enough for those folks.. see next post.
