  1. Just for clarifaction Jon, is this "lowest grade fuel" with or without ethanol ?? Danny
  2. I wouldn't do it. If I recall correctly, the octane rating back in the '40s was only in the low 80s so 100 is just way overkill and costly. I'd just go with the E-free premium from the bowser and save yourself all the other agro. Danny
  3. Sherwood, Apart from the fact that you are at 6000ft, what symptoms or problems (if any) are leading you to believe that the carby is running rich ?? I assume you have checked that the choke is fully off when the engine is warm. Danny
  4. I'll second Bernie's comment. :) Mind you, others far worse have been brought back from the brink. Danny
  5. G'day Laurie. Always good to see another '39er pop his head up. You are eligible to become one of the highly coveted positions of being a " '39 Buick Team Member ". What part of the world are you in ?? I had my original rods converted to take off the shelf bearings. The local engine reconditioners here in Sydney had some master bearings/dimensions list to choose from. They selected the bearings and modified the rods to suit. if I remember rightly (20+ years ago) the crank was ground 0.020" and the slippers were from a '60s slant six Chrysler. Danny
  6. Grant, that sounds like a good idea. Maybe we should instead opt for a game of rugby league, of course without all that armour and helmets that the Yanks like to get around in. :) How about them Rabbitohs on the weekend ?? Danny
  7. Watch out Bryan, this bloke is trying to drum up more "Team '40 Buick member"s. :) Danny
  8. Um, yes, an unhelpful ex-wife, delayed me somewhat, then I was distracted for a few years restoring an MG. Then I got remarried and the rot set in :). 3 kids and an old house constantly in need of something needing to be done chews up a lot of the spare time these days plus I have a small business that takes up a lot of my weekends but the good side there is I can look at my old girls and dream of future glory days whilst I'm working. Danny
  9. Welcome aboard Abbie !! I would reiterate what Andrew said in taking pictures of everything before you start. Do it from as many angles as you can and when dismantling anything take more pictures as you go. You'll be amazed at how many times the question will arise "where does this go ?" Also, it helps to have a picture to go with questions too. Is the car complete ?? Danny
  10. Time to change your title and officially be part of the team Uli !!! Danny
  11. Oh dear, it's SYDNEY Bernie. You Naw Yerkers crack me up. :) The Cross now may not be as you remember it but the harbour is still one of, if not the best on the planet. Come on down for a beer. Danny
  12. The 4 most obvious external differences between Holden and Fisher bodies is firstly as you have stated above about the door handles being inline with the belt trim (the handles and trim themselves are also different to Fisher), 2, the Holden rear window is split, not a 1 piece, 3, the Holden boot is much more rounded with a different handle to Fisher and 4, the bumpers have a different profile. . The instruments, glove-box and radio are the same but nothing else from a Fisher is the same as a Holden body. The dashboard is non removable from Holden and is welded in. Holden had an electric motor for the wipers, not vacuum operated which is both good and bad. The rear seat armrest was standard on all Specials and Centurys here. Danny
  13. Good to see you finally got it sorted Kevin. Danny
  14. I think Bob's picture has just been badly photoshopped to remove the background. I bought a set a few years ago for my '38 and they looked good though from memory they weren't quite as pointy as an original. If Nuttybuick is flogging them for $135, it's a sure thing they came from somewhere else for less than half that. If you get them from Bob's, I'd buy 2 so they look even and matched. Danny
  15. This is good info to get out there. So it seems the problem arises when left standing for some time. I guess the fuel in my daily drivers never sits long enough to cause grief. It has always been my intension to NOT use ethanol fuel in my Buick even though I rebuilt the pump with kits specifically made for ethanol. This story just affirms that it will be the right thing to do. Danny
  16. Bloody hell !!!! That's a shocker of a story. What sort of Ethanol do you blokes make over there ??? Sounds more like battery acid. I have a '96 Hyundai and have run it only on 10% ethanol for the last 12+ years and also a 2002 Holden Commodore (with Buick V6) that has run most of the time from new on it. Both cars have never missed a beat. (probably just put the mocka on myself :) ) We still have the option here for with or without ethanol. I use it as I see it as a few dollars that stay in the country and a few less to go to the Arabs. Danny
  17. There is a cable retaining bracket Sherwood. Here's a close up. The cable sits in it and is retained in place by this bracket. Keep in mind that this is a RHD lever but the cable retaining bracket will be the same. Let us know if this answers your question. Danny
  18. Jake, Good to hear a happy ending. It's most important that you get that thing right as it would be disastrous to have the starter engage when the engine is going. Hopefully your regulator is all OK and the safety relay is working Danny
  19. Andrew sounds like a prime candidate for " '39 Buick Team Member " status. Danny
  20. I guess you need to confirm that your carby stater switch is defective as it sounds like this is what your problem is. Did you remove the wire from the carby switch and then connect the battery kill switch ?? It sounds like the carby starter switch is stuck in the "on" position. Do you have Stromberg or Carter carbs ?? Danny
  21. What happened to the repro unit ??? Did the stale fuel rust the unit or something ?? Curious minds need to know and it could be helpful for others to be aware of this situation. If Nuttybuick is selling it for $125, you can safely assume that you can buy it for about half that somewhere else like Bob's Auto. Danny
  22. G'day Andrew and welcome to the forum. Always a pleasure to receive another '39er on board. What do you do over here in Aus when you're here? Danny
  23. Must have been down on the "Post War Forum" where they talk about all them there fancy, fandangled, modern automobiles. :) Danny
  24. I can't seem to see where in this thread he has asked for an opinion. Is there another thread somewhere related to this ?? Danny
  25. Any movement is generally not good a good thing. I'd say replace the pins as it is part of the process of "rebuilding my steering on my 1938 Buick special". Danny
