  1. Before I post a response to this Mr. Earl regarding the dual quads, Let me wish everyone a Best of the Holidays to All! Now, Here is all I have picture wise showing the dual carbs on my friend's Riv. Look at that HUGE air cleaner with the two snorkel air intakes. And since I just received this tonight, watch and you will see the car with the breather off. If you have patience and watch it all there are a couple of interesting cars (besides Buick's) but a few Buick's that are really nice. (Lot's of street rods - I know - but shows a bit of the local flavour) Enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeyoFWvgJtQ
  2. As the expression goes, "You either Love 'em or you Hate 'em" which can apply to many cars but in this case, I am with you!
  3. OK, I'll try this one for you. Two days before Xmas of 1970 my Grandmother was coming here by bus for the holidays and Dad had to pick her up at the bus station around 6 pm. He asked if I wanted go with him and we got into his 1958 Buick Limited he owned at the time. The bus was on time, exchanged hugs and home bound we went. About 9 blocks from home the universal joint started to really make noise (it was noticeable before this) and suddenly there was a loud BANG! Dad coasted over to the side and knew it had broken. Being 15 at that time and Dad having an antique car since I was 12 but not really any mechanical experience myself, asked him what we were going to do? Knowing a tow that time of year was going to take a long time he said he would walk home, get a rope and Mom's car and we would tow it home. With the car still running and the heat on Grandma said she would be fine so go ahead. When he got back and we hooked up the cars he told me to get behind the wheel of the Buick and watch myself. This was the first time actually in the limited control of a car and felt thrilled Dad would trust me with the task. (what choice did he really have?) Fortunately it was all residential roads but what a racket it made in the enclosed torque tube! When we got to the house he had to decide where to put the car as it was not going to be fixed right away. He decided to pull it up on the lawn in front of the house which mom had a fit over..... The rest of Holidays were great and as you can see it was a white one. I turned 16 that next month and had been talking about having a car so Dad later made a deal with me in the spring that if I helped him repair the car I could have it. It was the best BELATED Xmas gift a 16 year old could ever receive!
  4. Sure wish I had your abilities! Doing this work must give you great satisfaction. I would imagine locating a piece like that in good condition in your country would be like finding a needle in a hay stack and given the cost (and time) to find one here, you have likely saved by doing this yourself. Looking forward to your continued progress. Doug
  5. Thanks John. No it wasn't a hit and run and edited my post some. A van had started to come out of a driveway on my left as I was travelling along and because it had stopped but then moved as I was right at his front, I glanced left and then immediately noticed brake lights in front of me. I reacted by turning the wheel to the left, jamming on my brakes in an attempt to avoid hitting that car but.... it happened all too quick! Ultimately, one is supposed to have one's vehicle under control at all times under the law but.... Once I recovered noticed the van turn into the on coming traffic, sped up to the turn lane further up ahead ahead and go left. Even the driver of the car I hit on his left rear corner said he could not believe the van was pulling out like that. It was a very frigid cold night (7 above) and here it seems if all vehicles can drive away from an event, the police do not come out to do the report. They told us all to exchange information and report to a Collision Reporting Centre in the City the next morning. To add insult to (no) injury, when I got home that night went for my cell phone and in the flurry of things had lost it! My son and I went right back in a vain attempt to find it but no luck. I have sufficient insurance coverage for the truck and will be picking up a rental next week after the adjuster comes so the material things can be fixed, it could have been worse, even at City traffic speeds. There goes my 35 years with a clean "at fault" driving record, with my first ever new vehicle no less.
  6. Thanks Ben. No one was hurt fortunately... wish I could talk to the guy that distracted me....
  7. Yes be careful. Friend of mine has a 1966 Continental factory stretched limo we drove home some 150 miles. He took it to a guy (restoring cars) saying it would be 8,500 dollars to strip and paint it the original black it came out of the factory with. A clue should have been the 41 Continental in the shop that was barely in primer and all apart for about two years. Stated he was waiting for some money.... Sure enough once the limo was stripped and finding some rust around the stretched window panels, the press was on for more money. One day me and some other friends get a call and we are to bring pickups and trailers to go en masse and get the now fully stripped out but base coat painted car out of there! So far he has about 30,000 in it and the rebuilt motor and complete interior or glass are not in it. Lesson, cash or no cash, get something in writing of the complete process and your expectations (know sometimes hard to meet). See his finished work and talk to the owners at length before going ahead with anything. Good luck with everything. Currently sitting against the wall.....
  8. Having to dig out your snow blower in your truck before going to work...... Not Photo shopped.
  9. What a week! After the black ice and drivers not remembering their driving experiences from last year and this weekends record snow fall, WOW! Coming home from work at the height of the black ice event, decided to take a short bit of the last of the highway into the city. It is posted at 80 kms (50 mph) here and while coming down the on ramp experienced the glazed road so put on the 4 ways and managed to keep traction of my F 150 two wheel truck by running the right side tires on the gravel. Even with that only got up to 50 kms (31 mph) thinking I had things under control and would be home soon safely. I then noticed in the rear view mirror many headlights charging up my tail! Held my speed and watched as one by one they passed at a surprising speed. My turn off was just up ahead and slowed to the expecting icy curve when I noticed a set of tire tracks going over the slight embankment through the small field and a three inch tree bent over on the ground! Noticed ahead of the tree some movement to see this car bouncing up and over the on ramp and stopping in the ditch on the other side. Since no other cars were involved kept driving and thought, WELL, what did you expect? The wife's normal 25 minute drive home from work ended up taking 1 hour 15 minutes. Then this weekend the forecast was right (for a change) and by 3 am Monday morning we had 10 inches of heavy snow! Knowing I had to take care of my property's and Dad's, I couldn't sleep and was out by 4:30 am. This was what I saw. You know winter is here when one has to dig out the snow blower from inside one's pick up bed! Fortunately the main roads were in great shape even then but... driveways were a bear to dig out with the heavy snow having been pushed in.... Digging out by hand was not what I wanted to do or planned. Got to dad's eventually and knowing they were not to be anywhere special that day took my time. Mom turned 89 this week (still driving) and dad recently got good results from his latest scan and is stable for now so a good white Xmas is in play! Especially with highs forecast only in the low 20's for the while. Being this cold and no real heat in the garage, the Special will have to wait (again...) for some attention.
  10. Can't legitimately say I drove it but imagined going for a night drive soon. (Once she is on her feet again)
  11. After yesterdays sleet/light snow/black ice event and a forecast of 5-8 inches by Sunday decided to go and fire up the snow blower. After some fresh gas and several pulls once it warmed up tried the auger and the clutch to make sure things were functioning properly. Before loading up in the truck fired up the Special (again) and warming up on a not too high an idle tried the lights to help see what I was doing. Had to change out the drivers rear tail light as the brake light wasn't working. Easy to check with a 2x4 on the brake pedal. Having it in neutral she runs what you see on the dash. Need to check the ground on the gas tank since it should be about half full yet.

That looks like the voice of experience! You have about all the bases covered Mr. Earl. (Ask me how I know...)

Much appreciated when you get the chance. I know what you mean about cars in yards. Seems over the years I would remember which one had a 58 and when I went back to look at it, Just nothing but stainless of value and even then some was banged up enough that it was not worth taking off. Now of course there are none left around here..... Good luck with your power seat mechanisms. Keep us posted. Doug

Could you describe the condition of the trunk handle bar trim and the tail light trim at the top of the lights wrapping around the fender on the '58 Limited? Would they be driver quality at all or just cores for re chrome? Thanks, Doug
  15. Talked to the upholstery shop and after he found out I had the parts car Limited, wants me to bring in the seat back from it to play with before tackling my good seat back. Man, timing is everything in life! Things have turned cold, wet and threat of snow showers / snow accumulation this weekend. The car sits outside and this wasn't something I had planned right now.... Have to keep reminding myself, half the fun is getting there?
  16. With my "Honey do list" still in play, turned up the tunes yesterday afternoon and managed to find the backs of the front seats of my Limited. They were shoved in a corner after taking them off with the intent to bring to an upholsterer and see what it would take to have new foam put in them and the seat bottoms. Figured since they are accessible, might as well drop off and see what I need to save up... They are original to the car and in generally good condition like a 50,000 mile car should be but the foam has hardened and do not want to tear or damage the material trying to drive it (some day) and have the foam totally disintegrate under the seat. Not getting side tracked from the Special but knowing it will take some time and money, now is as good a time as any to put it on the bucket list!
