Is it possible this car infliuenced the Silver Arrow?
hddennis replied to karguy12's topic in General Discussion
Carguy12, could you post links to where else this car is being debated? I just want to see if you are getting this much flak elsewhere or just here? Howard Dennis -
I finally gave up trying to figure out how to make such a poorly designed seal work and decided to modernize it . I took everything to a machinist and he is going to make flanges that screw to the hub and have modern press in seals. It will end up costing me only slightly less than a complete differential swap would have but at least I won't have to worry about grease getting all over my new brake bands and wheels. Howard Dennis

Have you tried this fellow? Taillightking Web Site

Mike, it's been a few years since I lived in New York but I seem to recall their Motor Vehicle Inspections don't allow copper brake lines even when original equipment. Might pay to check before you invest more labor. Howard Dennis

Your Maxwell originally had a large battery that was divided into 2 halves of six volts apiece. It start on 12 volts and runs and charges from the starter/generator as a 6 volt. The starter becomes a generator after the engine starts and is then driven by the leather fan belt. Howard Dennis

Has anyone ever put front or rear wheel seals in a 1916-17 Maxwell? I have the new felt inner seals but can't figure what holds these seals in. It appears as if there is only about 1/8 of an inch of the sheet metal housing holding the seal to the hub??? This seems doomed to fall off soon after assembly. Anyone?? Howard Dennis

Just in case someone has a jar full of unidentified condensors, here is what I need, some have the tails drilled and some just have tiny metal tabs for contact. They measure 2 1/2 inches long. Howard Dennis

Want to buy one or a pair of top holdowns for a 1916-1917 Maxwell convertible. They fasten on to the front bow with two screws and have a spring loaded latch to fasten to the windshield post. Howard Dennis

Thanks I worked with them several years ago when they rebuilt my coils and voltage regulators. Great guys even greater work. Trouble is they have no parts for the Atwater-Kent distributors. Howard Dennis

This was posted on the Model T Forum and they were wondering what this car/truck conversion started life as?

I"m going to keep my fingers crossed you are right as I'm worried about not having enough room inside my distributor for anything but an original condensor as it it such an uncommon design. Howard Dennis

Thanks Ron, I have a few originals that I suppose would give me an average value. Who or how do I get them valued? Howard Dennis

Would I be safe in just requesting a 6 Volt condensor for my 1917 Maxwell with an Atwater-Kent Type CC distributor? Or do I need to know the original value? Howard Dennis
-
Thanks Ron for your answer. Any idea how you would find out the original value for an almost 100 year old system like my Atwater-Kent Type CC equipped 1917 Maxwell? Howard Dennis
-
I'd also like to know this as I've heard some say Radio shack capacitors can replace obsolete condensors. How do I know what value I need? Howard Dennis

Thanks Kelvy, I was able to locate one. Howard Dennis

Landman, stop in at your local Harbor Freight store and measure the machinists chest they have on display. Howard Dennis

This attitude just isn't with antique cars. Watch TV and see how many shows are popping up about how to modernize your Victorian house or take beautiful pieces of antique furniture and paint it some horrible color to bring it into the modern era. And they seem to hunt out pristine survivors instead of rundown examples. There just doesn't seem to be any respect for what came before just old is bad I can make it better. Howard Dennis
