  1. I change my oil after the first 30 minutes I run the engine to break in the cam which should be done around 1500-2000 rpm, then I take it easy for the first 100 mile diving at slow to 55mph, change the oil again and then srive it like I want. I retorque the heads after it cools after the first cam break in then again at 100 and 500 miles, everyone else might be different but Ive had no problems with my cars doing it this way. The only thing you have to worry about with the Lincoln V12 it there is only one temp sending unit and each water pump only cools one side of the engine so if your right side pump fails you can warp a head and not even know it, trust me ive been there. If you havent already done it send you water pumps to Skips. I had mine rebuilt by a very respected Lincoln dealer and the right one didnt work when I got it.Sorry for rambling.
  2. Wow thats cheap for those manifolds, I would go with the 3x2 set up as they are eaiser to set up and then your only running on the center 2bbl until you put your foot in it, I have a 2x2 intake on my 48 V12 and a 3x2 on my 440 6 pack challenger and linkage is easy to come by for the 3x2. you will like the big performance gain too. You can get carb spacer converters to go from 3 bolt to 4 bolt or flip them around from Speedway motors, there is plenty of room onder the hood of our Lincolns.
  3. I did a 48 conv, coupe a few years ago and love the car except for the vapor locking at the pump. I did hot rod my engine more than some but left it looking stock on the outside. If you want some nice door handles for the outside I will trade you a set for the push buttons. I might have some inside push buttons packed away somewhere if you need them. You have a nice car and if you need any help feel free to ask. I working on hot rodding my 36 Packard 3 window coupe with all old Packard hot rod parts, there are some out there for the Lincoln V12 too but be prepared to pay big bucks.
  4. I have a 48 conv. coupe that I put an edelbrock 2x2 intake on about 3 years ago. I got the 3 to 4 bolt conversion spacers from speedway motors and used two stock 48 Lincoln carbs on it. it runs like normal until you put your foot in it then it goes like you would think a V12 should. I will post a picture when I find it or will have to go down to the other garage and take one. Everyone will tell you your vacuum will drop with multiple carbs but mine went from 18 to 21 hg, I played with jetting and using only one accelorator pump and ended up stock settings on both using both accel pumps, block off the rear vacuum port and modify a new vacuum line for the front one and you should be good. They make a big difference on the freeway when you want to pass someone.
  5. Hi Rolf. didnt they use the same hubcap on the spare as they did the front? if so I have a few sitting around with the holes in them I could sell you cheap or make you a template if they are the same.
  6. I have a 40 180 that cruises nice on the freeway at 60 without the OD, with the OD its 80+ out here in california. also have a 41 120 business coupe all stock except for a rearend out of a 53 packard automatic car, I think its a 3.54 gear, it will cruise 75 without OD and cant hear it at 75 with the OD in.
  7. I used an optima 6 volt and got a battery case that is made to fit the optima inside with a original looking tar top that once in place no one has been able to tell the difference, only problem is it doesnt have the Lincoln script on the side, I have had the battery in the car for at least 6 years and gone to a number of Lincoln shows and no one has ever pointed out its a optima battery. I had to order the battery case from Packards International San Diego.
  8. I know my 48 conv coupe has the gold script front hub caps rears were always blank unless it was a special order car with no fender skirts which are very rare.
  9. all the wiring is rotted on my 41s wiper motor is is causing problems, I have an extra wiper assembly that works but the wiring is shot on it too. Anyone have the wiring for these?? also could use an extra switch if anyone has one.
  10. Looking for some info on converting my 52 Packard dist to a HEI. the car is already converted to 12volt, its the 36 3 window 120 I have, I want to convert it to HEI to cut out a few parts that I will be looking for later. I also have an edmunds 2x2 intake that will be going on along with a set of headers to run dual exhaust. right now just gathering info while waiting for my back to heal after having 3 discs fused,Here is a pic of the old screws they took out of my back, the Dr said the new ones are much bigger and a few more of them. its real uncomfortable sitiing here.
  11. Spal is an electric fan company, they make a great fan for 6 volt cars. I use my cars for daily drivers in 100+ summer days and in california traffic the electric fans keep them from getting to hot when your stuck at those 5 minute traffic lights in the middle of 50 or more cars.
  12. Try SPAL. I dont know if they still make thier 6 volt fans but I put one on my 48 lincoln convertible coupe and it works great at idle and low rpm crusing.
  13. I took my Father in Laws 39 v12 7 passenger touring to the Galt old car show this last sunday and we won best of show out of about 100 very nice cars, show is open to 43 and older cars only so Father in law was very happy.
  14. I found a very restorable complete 48 super custom 8 and would like to know of a value? its a straight rust free car complete except for a few trunk trim pieces, has the 356 engine thats complete and turns over, 3 speed with OD, all guages in nice shape. power steering and brakes and windows. even the chrome is useable as a daily driver, will need to be completely gone through as its been sitting for 30 years that I know of.
  15. I need the torque specs for the Aluminum cylinder head on a 39 V12, cant find my books since the wife cleaned my car/gun room
  16. I have one too with no instructions, its been so long since ive seen it, I belive its set up the same way as the Lincoln manual for setting it up a dist with the rulers but has the marks on the outside edge to make it quicker. I use a machinist ruler and can get them dead on better than my dist machine.
  17. Rebuild the Packard engine, once rebuilt they are the most reliable smooyhest running engines I have ever driven. I have three Packards now and have had 5 others that have never let me down and I use to drive a 48 through the mohave desert daily for 4 years, I put almost 200,000 miles on that car on top of the 48,000 original miles. Now I have a 36 business coupe, 41 business coupe and a 40 180 5 pass. touring, and I drive them all the time as I only own one new car and thats for my wife to drive to work and shopping. The only thing I have changed on the Packards is the generator to an Alternator as that seems to be the only hard part to get. and yes they are 6 volt pos ground Alts. You will wish you had never swapped out the original engine in the long run.
  18. Looking for a 36 dash as the whole thig is missing and was replace with a piece of oak with newer autometer guages. I do have a speedometer and radio delete plate. but no place to put them.
  19. I need a tail light lense for my 36, its round measures 3 1/2" across. also a dash panel for 35-37 with guages prefered. Thanks.
  20. I have a enginerring drawing with all the measurements for the V12 if that would help. its to big to copy but I will check it for whatever measurements he needs. Let me know. I also have a pair of stock exhaust manifolds if he is making headers.
  21. The Lincoln V12s and most all 12s I have done need a special engine stand, one that will support the engine from the exhaust ports and spin fron to back or back to front. A normal engine stand that will handle a load of 1300 lbs will buckle in no time leaving your engine hanging or worse yet break and leave you with a mess. I think there is a picture of the stand in the Lincoln reapier manual. I usually set mine on a bench and use the cherry picker to lift it and roll it.
  22. I think part of the reason the old luxury cars dont sell for as much as the sportier type old cars is the cost to restore them and the price for chrome now. Here is a pic of my 48 conv. coupe. I spent 6 years restoring it and there is over 10 grand just in chrome work. There will come a day when we will be able to get out what we put into our cars and if you watch the trends at the auctions (there is more than barret jackson) the classics are starting to make a comeback and bring what they are worth. I restore my cars because I love what I buy and I drive them, they can always be re-restored.
  23. Thanks guys. The first letter is a K, very hard to make out but that would make it a 288 from 1952 if what I read on the PAC site is correct. Now I will have to see if this old Edmonds 2x2 intake manifold will fit on this engine.
