1. Please keep comments related to the "subject". It will make it easier for us in making arrangements. In response: "Philly". Just trying to compile a roster here.
2. Howdy, Dave! I know it has been some time since you lived in Reading. Try "Route 422"...from there, you're on your own, son.
3. Folks, Howard's recollection is correct based upon typing "volts" in the Search area. You must page back through about 4 and you will see, by my count, 24 posts concerning "8 Volt Batteries". Most go back to '01. Regards, Peter J.
4. Hi, Diz...not too many respondees to "National", so I hope you don't mind. I can relate the "Ugliest Non-AACA" car show I ever attended: The Lions Club (name/town irrelevant), between Reading and Hershey, had their annual car show. It was my first time, so, I entered in the Foreign Car Class. Was directed to the class and parked. After about 30 minutes, a gent with an MG next to me said I was in the wrong class as my car must be 20 years old. At the time, it was 18 years old. An official came over and asked me to park in the "Special Interest" class. No problem, I thought, and, moved the car. I was in with a drag car, modified trucks, even a stationwagon that was very ratty looking. Judging started. The judges were 3 teenagers. Did not give it any thought at the time. When they announced the awards, WOW!! The Stationwagon, an everyday pickup that had a little pinstriping on it, and, a decent looking Camaro, won the 3 trophies offered in the class. The gent with the drag car went ballistic at the awards ceremony. He was yelling at the top of his lungs that the "judges" did not look at any of the 30+ cars in the class. They simply gave 1st, 2nd, and, 3rd to the aforementioned in decending order of how they were parked. The Lions Club official started yelling "You want a trophy, here, take one", and, literally threw 2-3 out at the drag car owner. The owner yelled back "I want to earn a trophy, etc." Needless to say, that was the last time this show was held after a 14 year stand.
5. Sal...sounds good. Do your thing. This thread may get buried over 8 weeks. I'll bring it to the top occasionally so we have a good idea. I am keeping a separate, written logue of attendees.
6. LI...St. George's is a restaurant just a few blocks from the Wyndham. Sort of a tradition for the DF'ers to get away and shoot the breeze. The reason I am posting it this early is last year it got quite full, plus, there were quite a few office type workers that came in around noon. Ron & Bruce...Just thought I'd start the ball rolling as we may have more than last year the way it looks. Ron, I'll keep it open for sure. I would think if I called them Monday for a heads up, and, Thursday with a "close count", we should be OK.
7. Those interested in attending, please post. Usually, we have it around 11:30 on Friday (Feb. 7th this year). I could give them a call as it gets closer to assure enough tables. Regards, Peter J.
8. I am convinced that "In lieu of a raise, we'll give you a Title" applies to the subject. Also, if you are looking for attention by the your title anywhere in life, it and a nickel won't buy a cup of coffee. Just helping out to make the forum better is enuff pay, at least the way I see it.
9. Hey, Bill...that was a good one. About 3 miles into S.E. PA from the Maryland border, is a town called "Chrome, PA". I'll print out 2 copies of your joke and drop them off next time I go through there. (Why only 2? 'cause there's about 2 homes there!)
10. Hi, Bill. Good to hear from you. As for Whitworth bolts, I really do not know. I am the original owner of my TR6, never had the engine out, or, had a need to get into the details of the bolt manufacturer. Have some books, of which, I will scan through to see if there is any references to Whitworth, years of utilizing said bolts. If you are looking to sell the wrenches, I know a very good mechanic who works on Triumphs, MG's who possibly could use them. Best regards, Peter J.
11. Hi, Wayne... Going to test all 3: Stainless, hardened late manufacture, and, George's bolt he sent me. Regards, Peter J.
12. JB-ed...how are you? Good point. The bolt we are using is "graded". I'm at home now. Will check difference in dimensions next week. My curiosity is heat treated, or, quench & tempered traits/differences. I believe this would have more of an effect than, say, a mere .005, or, .008 dimensional difference in bolt head size. For "most" automotive torquing, it is done by brute strength, or, air wrenches on an assembly line. Basic comments most of you folks would be aware of, but, the torque we will use, I guarantee, none of us would ever see in auto restoration/repairs. Who knows what we'll find. There is a possibility one, both, or, none will shear, but, at least we can make a comparison, and, the metallurgical chemistry report will be a reference to ascertain the reasons. May wind up with a yield & elongation contest vs. shearing of the head. Who knows? We'll find out, folks. Regards, Peter J.
13. Hi, George (and other folks reading this.) Just a quick update. Should have the analysis published here next week. As I told George, I bought a comparable bolt of recent manufacture so we can compare metallurgy. Doing this in between my paid job. Want to put the report of Si, C, etc., into laymen's terms, too. Going to torque George's sample to the max to see where it either snaps, or, doesn't snap. At least we'll have the highest rating. Regards, Peter J.
14. You have to wake up to fact. The Quick Lube boys, the Amalgamated Auto Chain Stores, "many" of my friend's recommended mechanic, all buy their goods, for the most part, from ("be careful how you answer") non-USA VENDORS!! Speaking for myself, when I have a vehicle serviced, never have I taken the time to inspect, tear apart, or, whatever, a service part for my satisfaction. What I always do, is, know where the shop buys parts, elements, etc. First, I would question the quality standards, durability of the filter element, and, the vendor's ISO Certification coming from a sweat shop. Ever wonder how the Quick Lube boys do it so cheap? I may be totally off-base here, but, these are my opinions. Regards, Peter J.
15. j...Go to the top of the page and click on "Search". When prompted, for time perior enter "All"; enter "Insurance". If that wasn't enough reading, enter "Antique Auto Insurance"; then, "All". You can do this Search with any topics. Some may show non-topic subjects, but, all you do is scroll-away. Both subjects will provide a miriad of posts of long ago on the subject. There are many knowledgeable/experienced folks on this forum that offer a lot of tips and experiences. One thing for certain, make sure you get "Agreed Value" if you go with any antique auto insurance companies. Regards, Peter J.
16. Great! Welcome to the club. Regards, Peter J.
17. SpeedBump... The AACA Library & Research Center, located within the AACA National Headquarters building at 501 W. Governor Road, Hershey, PA, just 15 minutes from Palmyra, could possibly help: Contact Kim Miller @ 717-534-1910. Or... The '80's are not all that long ago. Contact the school. Maybe someone knows where it was acquired, or, at best, steer you in a direction. I would think that the State of PA purchased these "canned" clips from a vendor studio that promoted the product. Possibly the State Police barracks? Regards, Peter J.
18. Speed Bump...I am only taking a best-shot at this. Whatever state you are in, either, contact the DMV, or, go to your local library. Best I can think of for now. Can you remember where/who showed the reel-to-reel? Regards, Peter J.
19. Hi, Dave...now why did I think you could relate to Lucas?? Keep the faith! Regards, Peter J.
20. Bob, at least they were going in the same direction. Seriously, to see any Karmann Ghia lately, that's unusual. Wayne, the worst case scenario would be his mother-in-law was married to the Chairman of Lucas Electronics. I shutter at that thought. I was told that if there were ever World War III, Lucas will be tapped to handle armaments. That way nothing will work, and, no one will get zapped. See ya'...
21. Hi, Bob. Ron offers good advise. I would make a reservation now for assurance. Ron Flory and I attend meet in Morgantown and ride in one vehicle for Friday. If you decide to go, let me know. You and Patti could follow us directly to the hotel. e-mail me on the TR-6 status. I have not spoken with Jim Lewis lately. Regards, Peter.
22. Hi, George. Just a note that I received the bolt today. Will have the lab do their thing with the Spectrometer on Monday. I'll get back... Regards, Peter J.
23. Hi, Bob...glad you made it OK. h-m-m-m...a Karmann Ghia and a TR-6 on the same trailer. Gotta be a Brit married to a German woman. "You can buy that TR-6 ONLY if you get me a Karmann Ghia." I can picture the whole scenario. Poor guy.
24. 28 Chevrolet, you are quite welcome. e-mail me, or, post here in a few "work days", say this Tuesday if you have not received your membership. Regards, Peter J.
25. Hi, Bob...looks like our posts were sent at a collision point. 3-4 weeks appears to be the norm.
