  1. Packards use a timming chain, they stretch but do not jump time. If this engine was running well before layup, bad fuel may be the problem. Try starting fluid and see if it fires. JB
  2. Posting the frame # will get you the year. JB
  3. If it is a touring, it is a D45, a roadster is D44, a convertable coupe is D46 , 4dr sedan is D47. Both 1916 and 1917 use the prefex D. JB 22-6-55 Sport Touring
  4. Redbaron, A dc motor with field windings will not change direction, it will always turn the same way. The pulley you see turning is on the cam, which is gear driven. What does the amp gauge show when the engine is running?? The electricial system in this car is neg. ground. The battery is installed wrong and should be changed to the correct neg. ground. I have seen generators charge in the reverse polarity, in later years flashing the gen. was the process to make shure it was charging correctly. On this car the gen motors slowly when you turn on the ign. and you hear the clicking from the gen clutch , this does the same thing as flashing. Change to neg ground and try it, you may not need to change anything else or rewire the amp gauge. JB 22-6-55 Sport Touring
  5. The fan and pulley do turn ccw but the crank is turning cw, the pulley is on the cam not the crank. The battery should be neg. ground, I hope the starter/gen has not been damaged, as they are expensive to repair!!! JB 22-6-55 Sport Touring
  6. Check the bearing adjustment, sounds like they are too tight. JB 22-6-55 Sport Touring
  7. I am refering to the one with the part # on it, the other one, is the front hanger of the spring. The wheelbase would be 118" or 124" JB Buick 22-6-55 Sport Touring
  8. Remove the 3 bolts that hold it to the gear case, the 2 bolts that clamp the water pump , and it should slide back and out, it may need a little help moving. JB 22-6-55 Sport Touring
  9. The bolt is the center spring mount. The front of the spring is forward of this mount and the rear end of the spring is on the axle housing. The 4cyl series uses a different rear suspension, this style is used only on the 6cyl chassis. You can go to 1929buick.com and look at several buick reference books, that show pics of the chassis. Even with the crack this frame is quite useable and the rear end has a lot of good brake parts. JB Buick 22-6-55 Sport Touring
  10. Just checked the book, it is a late 1922. 23 started with 879xxx. JB
  11. Looking at the pics again, I see the frame # tag on the rear crossmember. That means it is not a 23, (23 is behind left front wheel). The first # on the # tag looks like an 8, 8xxxxx. I'm thinking 1922. JB Buick 22-6-55 Sport Touring
  12. That frame is 21,22, or 23 Buick 6cyl. If you measure the length I can id the series, also the length between the two spring mounts, 22 vs 23. The rear end housing looks like it is from the same frame. It looks to be in good shape There is home for it. Post this on the Buick Prewar forum. If you were closer I would take it. JB Buick 22-6-55 Sport Touring
  13. Jerry, Look on the side of the frame just behind the left front wheel. JB 22-6-55 Sport Touring
  14. 1920 Buick tourings do not have outside handles, 21 and up do. JB
  15. The end of the shaft is a drive for the gen. 1st remove the small cover on the back of the gen/starter, then drive out the lock pin , (support the shaft when driving out the pin ). Then move the coupling back toward the water pump. Remove the cover on the flywheel housing (over the stater gears), then the bolts for the gen/starter, and remove gen/starter. JB 22-6-55 Sport Touring
  16. 21,22,and 23 tourings use a T shaped handle on the outside, and a lever with a plated knob on the inside. JB 22-6-55 Sport Touring
  17. Steve, The sliding gear shaft is held by a roll pin in the front of the housing. JB 22-6-55 Sport Touring
  18. I guess the early 23 engines had the # stamped into the block, all of the 23's I have seen it was on a plate. Post a request for Dave Corbin to ID the #'s. He will have the answer. JB
  19. With that starter/gen, the engine is a 1923, it also should have steel timing gears. The #932111 indicates a 1923 engine but the frame # is late 1922. Is the frame # above the gas tank? 1923 #'s are behind the left front wheel. You will have to have main brgs made, the upper half is an insert and the lower half is poured,as are the rods. New pistons with rings, are available from several vendors. Is there a body? The wheelbase will help id the model, 118" is for models 41,44,45, and 46. The longer 124" is for models 48,49,50,54,and 55 Dave Corbin may be able to corectly id this one . JB 22-6-55 Sport Touring
  20. Justin, That engine # is probably a 1922. Engine #'s on a 1923 engine were stamped on a steel plate then riveted to the block, 1922 #'s are stamped in the the alum. The location of the frame # on a 1922 is on a oval plate above the gas tank, except on models 54&55, on a 1923 it is behind the left front wheel. JB 22-6-55 Sport Touring
  21. Forgot to mention the item #14, it looks like a complete running gear chassis. JB
  22. Josef, Also in Dillon Montanna is Walters Antique Cars Walter's Antique Cars., They have a 28 Master parts car for $250. JB 22-6-55 Sport Touring
  23. Josef, Vintage Auto Parts, in Co. lists axle shafts for 28-32 NOS for $145.00, with the part# LB51. JB 22-6-55 Sport Touring
  24. I think your problem is the jumper cables used to start the car. Jumper cables cannot carry enough current to crank the engine, use the correct battery cables (00 gauge), and try again. JB Buick 22-6-55
