  1. Check with Hundley Acuff: 706-866-4875. He does the rubber , and they are VERY good
  2. Powerglides are being used in many Supergas cars that make 700+ HP. I can't feature breaking one that has been properly built with 300HP
  3. Sid, Bernice and I will be in Sedona with two grand sons. We are driving our 69 Sport Wagon.
  4. I have dynomax on my 37 coupe with a 455, and flowmasters on my 72 GS ,and the dynomax bark too much in acceleration. Thay are quieter on the road, but are quite a bit louder on acceleration
  5. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! There will always be as many opinions as there are Buicks and people. I like the "Gangster era" Buicks with the side mounts and the sweeping fenders, but I also think the 37-38 coupes and convertibles were COOL! The 53 Skylark should also be high on everyones list. If I were blind, i would think the 70 GS455 Stage one has the sweetest sound ever made by an engine ( especially with headers and Flow Masters)
  6. The B4B repositions the carb, so be sure you have room for it. The original manifold sets the carb back from center, and the Edelbrock is in the middle
  7. When reading the article, I was impressed by the fact that although most cars are reduced to rubble in one skirmish, This Buick just keeps coming back for more! The way the article was written, I believe the owner was trying to convey to us that you can beat a Buick to death, but you can't stop them.
  8. My 57 Chev convert with the single 4 BBL ,with an overdrive and the 4.10 axle ran right at 20MPG.The powerglide equipped units ,I believe would run 17-18 MPG. The 245 HP 2X4 set up cost about 2MPG, and the 270 HP would probably run 12-13MPG. Different gears and body styles also played a role.
  9. Living in Flint and being involved with Sloan museum through the years has given me the priviledge of driving the "Bug' ,the Wildcat ll, and the Pontiac "Solstice" I have also done some work on the XP300, and the Centurion. We are fortunate that these cars are here in the hometown of Buick.
  10. I do not think the color is right for either year. the 40 should be dark grey, and the 53 was a torquise blue. It also has all the 53 sheet metal. The spark plug cover and the air cleaner are for the 53. I do not have the expertise to post pictures.
  11. If he will send you the complete center section from a dynaflow, all you need to do is put the torque tube and drive shaft from your car on the unit, and put it in the car. The axles have the same spline, so it is a bolt in operation. You might ask him to send the rear cover also, as your cover might rub. PS I have a 1940 56C with the same ( 53 engine and 3.42 axle) and I can cruise all day at 70+
  12. I have not seen any race car other than the "Bug" at the Sloan, and I have been everywhere they have cars.
  13. There was a company that put the Borg Warner overdrive in the torque tube, but it was after-market. The simplest cure for a 40-52 straight 8 was the gears set from a 54-55 dynaflow. this took you from the 3.9-4.4 axle to a 3.3-3.4 and made a tremendous difference in highway RPM.
  14. I should have realized on looking at the tool that you needed a BIG thread. A tap that size would be very expensive anyway! Good Luck in your quest
  15. There is only one interstate road in the UP, so you will be able to tour to your hearts content.
  16. Have you checked the timing on the engine? Retarded timing will make an engine run hot!
  17. You may register the 57 plates, but you can not reuse the "antique plate. you will need to either get another set of 57 plates, or purchase a new antique plate. Hagerty will insure all three, and only get you for one catastrophic claim.
  18. It seems to me that if the 400 point system is set up so every thing not original is a point off, the modified division should judge that every thing that it changed is a point for! That would mean that the Buick with the most modifications (that are well done) would be the winner.
  19. We have a problem in Michigan with the insurance. The cars with regular plates are hit with a $100-$120 dollar fee to cover catastrophic claims. The cars with antique plates have one fee for the fleet (you pay one fee for all the antiques you own) The license plates are also issued for as long as you own the car, which also saves a bundle. I drive my antiques all summer and have been stopped for the plates only once in 30 years. That was in Kentucky, and the cop did not know about "year of manufacture" plates. When i showed him the paper work , he let me go.
  20. The BCA has made GREAT strides in accepting modified Buicks! The GS club was started 20 years ago, because the GS was looked on as just another "A" body. There have been modified Buicks coming to the national meet for some time now, but thanks to Keith Horsfall and a dedicated group of members that have "modified" Buicks, we now have some recognition and stature within the BCA. I personally will be bringing a "modified" and welcome the chance to join others of the same persuasion!
  21. The new wrenches that lock on the flat rather than the corners are the latest thing, and they will remove a nut when nothing else will.
  22. Many old engines have short pickup tubes, and just running the pump will not prime them. The 400-430-455 series Buick engine, and the "nail heads" have the pick up tube mounted far enough away from the pump that it is necessary to use petroleum jelly to seal the gears enough to pull the oil up to the pump. The earlier post that quotes the manual is absolutely correct.I use Vaseline in all my pumps and it has never given me a problem ,and I alway get pressure rapidly.
