  1. If you don't find a disc brake set up , you can always put the brakes from a Century on ,and help yourself considerably. The Special has 1 3/4 wide linings, and the Century has 2 1/4, so you will pick up a lot of stopping power. I made this change on my 40 Super, and it really helped a lot. I also have a 37 coupe with a 455 , and I installed a Mustang 2 front end, with the big discs.
  2. One of the highlights of the BDE National meet last spring was the tour to Don maytons home ,and a chance to see the "Future Liner"! We were allowed to climb in , under ,and around it to see what a fantastic job Don and his volunteer group had done. I saw the "Future Liner" before they started the restoration, and could not believe how great the thing was turning out!
  3. Lamar, the meet in Batavia will be the first meet where the Buick Modified Division will be recognized, so look for a 37 coupe that is burgundy ,and has "Coupe De Grape" etched in the quarter window. See you there
  4. Ford did not make it, but there were many aftermarket companies that made intakes for the flat head. They had 2-3 and even 4 carbs .

  6. I bought my first Buick in 1948. It was a 1931 model 57 ,and the head ,pan, and piston and rod assemblies were in the back seat. I drove it for a year ,and then bought a 1937 century 4 dr with sidemounts. It was almost the fastest car at school.( the only thing faster was a 1949 Olds Rocketwhich was brand new) I have had many different cars through the years, but I have had mostly Buicks, and it seems even today, that Buick still is the car of choice.   7. The rear of the crankshaft in a 63 401 is different than the crank in a 64 up. I am not sure of exactly what the difference is, but the ST-400 will not fit without some changes.

I listed my phone number and also that I would like to be called 6PM-11PM EST, and I have been called from 7AM to 3AM. I get a little upset when the caller is asking a question about judging, which I have clearly stated I know nothing about, but I am still polite. It appears from your posts that you expect VOLUNTEERS to be available at your convenience. If you don't think we supply a valuable service, talk to the members that we have helped! PS I am probably one of the older guys in the BCA,(number 1308) and this organization is GREAT! even if we can't please everyone
  9. I have also been a tech advisor since the system was initiated. The above posts pretty well covered the things that we go through, but there is one other thing that happens, and I do not know why. I am listed as an advisor for engines and drive lines ONLY. Many people call ,some at 3AM, and want to know what color the oil filter should be on an engine that is not even listed under my name. I think all the tech advisors do a great service, and I'm sorry if you feel that volunteers should be at your beck and call any time, but that is NOT how the system works!
  10. You might look at the 40-41 Buick as a choice. The rear axle ratios from the 55 will fit in the original rear end and gives you a 3.42 -1 gear. I installed the later (2 1/4 ) brakes from a 55 , and it increased my stopping ability by a BUNCH! My 40 Super is comfortable on the interstates at 70+ all day long. They also have sealed beams, so you can actually drive them at night. These changes are all invisible, so judging is not a problem.
  11. The standard engine in the 64 was a 300 with aluminum heads. I don't think the Olds had an aluminum head option.
  12. It probably was spedded up a little, but if you watch the TA behind it, as it follows ,it is getting loose in the rear, so they had to be running pretty hard! Either that or the guy in the TA was gassing it to make that impression.
  13. My 57 model 49D was sold to a customizer. I had it on display at the Sloan Museum, and they wanted to buy it, but didn't have the funds available. Dan Webb, a custom car builder bought it and he put air suspension and 18 inch wheel on it and it garnered many awards. It was a center spread in Custom Rodder, and was best in show at the St Ignace meet. I enjoyed driving it and seeing the faces on people as we drove by hauling our 1954 Airstream .We found that it is much easier to stay in motels,and we actually see more country as driving a back road with a trailer is sometimes a little tricky.
  14. I have found a mileage difference between brands as well. Try a different brand and see if that helps.
  15. In th original "Smokie" I never cease to be amazed at the last scene where the semi takes over! Whoever was driving it did a GREAT job, as the TA behind it has it's tail stuck out on the corners, so he is really haulin' a**
  16. I think you may be seeing a base coat, as the proper grey is a "battleship grey" .It is about like the darker of the two greys showing on the screen for the title blocks
  17. BINGO!! The book shows the dash, but it may be because the first number designates the series. The number you found puts you in the middle of the model yeay, so you are in good shape.
  18. Bernice and I will be there. The last meet there was GREAT!! I especially liked the arrangement , with the swap meet around the perimeter of the meet. You could look at cars, and shop at the same time! this is the best of both worlds. I also like the chance to go to different places of interest without a whole bus load. You can do things at your leisure instead of being on someone elses schedule. This will be the first meet for the "Modified" division also,and I willl be interested in seeing how it goes.
  19. Many of the items you are looking for are available from the Sloan Museum in Flint MI. They are "The Buick Store" now.
  20. The 3800 is scheduled to depart in 2009, and the replacement is a 3.6 liter engine with 4 valves per cylinder and variable valve timing. GM is building a new plant close to the plant now producing the new inline 6 . They are both going to be in Flint, so GM still has a large presence in the Flint area.
  21. The info in the motors manual shows the number on the right side of the crankcase near the front. The series 40 numbers started with: 4-3396937, and ended with : 4-3572651
  22. One of the major problems with a rim swap ,is that the center hole in the 55 is bigger than most after market wheels. Be very careful what you put on.
  23. There should be a number stamped on a machined surface by the distributor. Tell us what it is ,and we will let you know

  25. I bought my first Buick in 1969 because my boys wanted to use my 29 F**d roadster pickup with a 427 chevy engine, and I was not too accepting of this idea. I bought a 37 Chevy 2 door to get in the antique club in the area, and found that my family wouldn't fit, in the car, not the club. We had 6 children and a mother-in law in the family. Denny Manner ( Buick engineer and fellow Hot Rodder) showed me a picture of a 1932 Model 97 for sale in Missouri. I bought it sight unseen, and that started my involvement with the BCA. My wife and I have since found that the BCA membership has the nicest people on th planet. We make as many meets as we can, and look on them as reunions. Our present fleet : 37 Special coupe ( modified with a 455 Buick engine and all the latest toys) 40 Super Convert (restored to original and driven over 100,000 miles) 63 Electra 2 dr hard top ( 26,000 mile original) 69 Sport Wagon ( Our Travelling car-original except for 200-4R overdrive) 72 GS 455 convert ( used to harrass Mustang owners and drag race) 91 Park Avenue Ultra ( my daily driver) 04 Rendezvous ( Mama's car)
