  1. Sorry for the multiple posts...I submitted during an "update" and then it asked me to confirm. It's the dang robots that are taking over!

  5. My senior year of high school (1968) some buddies heard about a 54 Chevy for $50. We each put in ten bucks. Naturally we didn't worry about registration or insurance. We drove it through orchards around Walnut Creek and then my buddy Ron thought it would be fun to run it up a steep bank next to the gas station where he worked and see how far it would jump. He put on an old football helmet (the kind with ears) for safety. He got a run at the bank at about 35 miles an hour, but when he hit the bank, the front bumper dug in and the whole front and hood just sort of folded under. He didn't get hurt but it did almost get fired.
  6. About 18 months ago, at the height of the Covid related used car boom, I helped my grand daughter buy a first car. At that point, there were no running cars on Craigslist for under $2500. She bought a Lexus with 200K miles on it. My own first car (1966) was a $50 Hillman that needed brake work. I'd like to hear about other "first cars" from decades past. I'm trying to get a mental picture of costs between the $50 and the $2500. Anybody involved in a purchase like that in the 80's or the 2000's?
  7. Looks like they spend some money on the interior. "Runs and Drives" is certainly open to interpretation! https://classiccars.com/listings/view/1655119/1932-chrysler-airflow-for-sale-in-staunton-illinois-62088 1932 Chrysler C1 5 passenger 4dr sedan, rare original un restored survivor, $3000 spent on new Mohair interoir, original 19inch wire spoke whees dual side mounted spares, rear luggage rack, rear suicide doors, new padded roof, flathead 6cyl 3 speed, runs and drives. 8. Pretty interesting. I've thought about an electric T coupe as a great in town round about that my wife might drive. They say "Talk is cheap" but thoughts are even cheaper!
  9. I've always thought of these as more sophisticated than the rest of the Cadillac line. I guess their advertising worked on me.
  10. Price might be only a little high if it was a running driving car (it's not) More pics in ad https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/d/campbell-1931-willys-97a/7585571598.html This is a very nice original 1931 Willys 97A I bought at an auction about a couple years ago. I heard the car run at the auction but its been in storage since then. I have some accessories for this car like a authentic leather registration wallet and a step for the trundle seat the previous owner was planning to install. Other extras are included. The interior was restored in white at some point. I have too many projects so I am letting this one go for the right price. This could easily be cleaned up and with new paint and some restoration it could be a museum piece or a nice car to add to a collection. email f3ad6abc43973cfcb88b1ff8070ded32@sale.craigslist.org
  11. That's an interesting question. Lots of vertical room in the engine compartment. Seems like the height of the radiator was set by cooling requirements but even more by the height of the cowl. They always wanted horizontal lines.
  12. Right you are! I remembered those but since the location was different by about a thousand miles I didn't think it was the same.
  13. Not mine...more pics in ad https://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/cto/d/willows-1941-lincoln-convertible/7584980005.html This is the second convertible out of 400 produced in 1941. Frame number H107710. It is an older restoration that has been stored for 35 years. The car is complete. The body is dent free as well as rust free and the paint still shines. Approximately 95 % of the chrome is sill good. All parts and engine are original to the car. If any parts are found missing I will replace them with parts from another '41 Lincoln in my possession . This includes new door window grass with polished frames and new windshield. To the best of my knowledge this is the earliest surviving 1941 Lincoln Cabriolet. See my other LA Craigslist ad for more Lincoln and Zephyr restored parts. I can best be reached by phone after 7:00 in the evening. At other times please leave a message and I will return your call as soon as possible. Asking $25,000 email: 5cbe50575a703704a178a0f567a8fa2a@sale.craigslist.org
  14. This is "all the money" for one of these. It's got a lot of expensive improvements...maybe that justifies the price? https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/d/hollister-1931-ford-model-deluxe/7584884001.html This is a 1931 Ford model A Deluxe Roadster in excellent condition, both mechanically and appearance-wise. 15. That was my plan but I'm having difficulty finding a place that does that anymore.
  16. Probably the same reason the ad has zero information. I get the feeling the seller knows nothing about this or any other collector car.
  17. If it's the mechanical system, I believe there are only two shops in the US who can rebuild the pump. One in the San Francisco area and one on the East Coast. Once done they are very trouble free, but that expertise doesn't come cheap! Apparently this car has a carburetor, so that's a lot easier.
  18. I have the gas tank out of the car and I see there's a lot of gunk in the bottom. It sat in a field for about 20 years. Doesn't seem to have any rust but boy is it dirty. There was a radiator shop up the road that was going to boil it out for $80 but I've taken my time getting it out (maybe 3 years) and in the mean time, he retired. I guess since modern radiators aren't repairable, radiator shops have gone the way of TV and radio repair. Any ideas? Car is a 51' Simca 8 Sport if you care....
  19. Plus, if you breakdown anywhere in the US or Canada, there's another A owner within a few minutes drive who can help you.

  21. Go earlier in the week (Thursday?) and it's much cheaper. I haven't seen much there I was truly interested in but it's fun to see the circus like atmosphere and the vendor area is a hoot.
  22. I'm reading Walter L. Marr, Buick's Amazing Engineer It's a very good read and covers up to WWI. One fascinating topic covered is Buick's "Cycle Car". Cycle cars were an idea to make a very inexpensive car that would be (by necessity) also very small. In the US they have a very brief run and never were able to compete with Ford on price. They lasted much longer in the UK due to their taxation structure. Buick's chief engineer (Walter Marr) built a prototype in 1914 but it was far too nice to ever be built a the price that would make it attractive. The feature I found charming was the track was 36 inches so "you could drive it through the garden gate and park it on the porch". Of course that mean tandem seating, another impediment to sales.
  23. Right you are Steve! Porsche tried this circa 1980. It was a fiasco and since then the dealers have circled the wagons and have had legislators in many states write laws that protect them. Today all successful dealers have an internet and social media presence and deals are definitely done that way, but I doubt anyone reading this will see the end of dealers. I also think they will be way different with far less inventory that they have been in the past. It's another area where Tesla (no dealers) is causing a re-think.
  24. Just reading Walter L. Marr, Buick's Amazing Engineer, By Beverly Rae Kimes. I'd recommend it...it's "a good read'!
