  1. A friend has made three or four trips from NM to eastern KY in his 48 Ford F1 pickup for the annual Truckstock gathering - a group of guys that get together each year with their 48-56 Ford pickups. He usually takes 3 days or so and stays off the interstates.
  2. The work will be worth it. I want to see more pics of the BIG BOY. Got to love those Hudsons
  3. You may want to check that statement regarding PayPal. I believe they will only refund your dollars if you are dealing with an EBay listed item. Other types of purchasers are not protected. This may have changed with the expanded use of Paypay but you best read the fine print.
  4. This may be a place to find a hub cap but you have to do it soon good luck. Hubcaps --20,000 heading to the dumpster end of Oct 2016 Attached Thumbnails
  5. You might try The Street machine mfg co. Tsmmfg.net I think is their site. They make various conversion kits for GM and Ford cars and trucks. I used them for my 49 F3 Ford pickup. Good people to work with. They are in Colorado.
  6. If you start putting emails and phones on the list also put an option to NOT receive any advertising. I assume you will not sell this info to current advertisers or outside list companies. I have been in the service burea business for 40+ years specializing in magazine list fulfillment and often receive list with this data on them. So if you do I suggest you make the fulfillment bureau sign a contract stating they will not process any out going list with that info on it under pentality of a large payment. I do that for my customers as a matter of policy. I also suggest a salt file be added to the list to check on the processing.
  7. I guess I got lucky. When my daughter was pretty young and getting seriously into horses we purchased a 5.5 acre place. Then we fenced it in -- manual labor by pops. Then I started looking for barn builders. They wanted more for the barn than I spent on our first house! So we went around to every barn we knew and got ideas. Drew up the plans and pops power got going again. We ended up with a 40 x30 4 stall barn with a hay loft that could hold 400 bales of hay. After college she took the horses east and the barn was empty. When I originally built I made all of the stall walls removable as I knew it would make a great building for my future cars. The floor was non slip bricks. Each stall had a Dutch door and the isle had 4 Windows, double doors at each end. Ventilation was great lighting was great. Hot and cold water. Started to rebuild my collection when my wife decided it was time to downsize so we sold it! I really miss that building. I did learn one thing from all of it. Never buy anything that eats while you sleep! Have fun keep building so the rest of us can dream.
  8. We had 2 Jaguars we called the red. Car and green car. Growing up it was Myrtle the turtle because it was so slow. The 38 is called the beast due to its size. Never painted names on any.
  9. Could the care taker have sold the car to the GI then said he didn't know what happened as he "was out of town" at the time it disappeared?? No that would be very sneeky for a low paid servant of a guy in jail who couldn't sign a pay check to do, right? Just a thought
  10. Thank you. I appreciate knowing my books are ok and finding out the specs. Your help will make it possible to get the beast back on the road by this weekend.
  11. Does anyone know the rear main torque specs on a 38 6 cyl ? can not find any specs except size in the shop or parts manual. Could I have an incomplete or abbreviated manual ?
  12. Went and looked at a Jaguar MK9 in NJ that the owner said ran very well in all 3 gears. Got there and the clutch was shot if you got it moving in first and shifted by engine revs and no clutch it did run well until the battery ran down as the generator was shot also. Lucky it did die as the temp gauge was red lined but not much was coming out of radiator as it had more leaks than good tubes it it. I asked the owner why he thought it ran well, his answer was it did when he first bought it twenty years ago! I then asked if he wanted to repay me for a flight and hotel expenses to see a pile of junk and he said no and that I just didn't appreciate a classic when I saw one.
  13. P "Pictures are recent" if twenty years ago means recent -- "It ran like a top when we parked it" A top that was just about stopped spinning.
  14. What are you asking for it and how old is it ?
  15. Try the HAMB - you will get an idea of what they are worth. Be warned when you sign up be sure to go thru the introduction thread process as the turkeys on the forum will be all over you if you don't do it. Lots of good info but some of the people on it think they are God like. have fun
  16. One thing that strikes me in the story- They say it was stolen but we don't know what the US army guy actually did. He may have been a private or a general. He may have done everything properly with paper work and it was really a spoils of war. Maybe the plant owner was not a member of the Nazi party but he was a German national and we were in a declared war with all of Germany not just Nazi's. A lot of non nazi Germans killed a lot of drafted GI's some that may have gone to war willingly and some that may not have wanted too but did because their country was at war. I agree it's a mess but we need Paul Harvey to give us the rest of the story if it's possible to figure out.
  17. I currently have a 38 Studebaker Stste Commander. It's big heavy handles well, has decent brakes and doesn't get pushed around by the big trucks on the highway. I took it up to the Indy track for the Haggerty show and we were able to drive the track. It ran at 70 for 4 or 5 laps just fine. I didn't have to worry about someone cutting in front of me or any panic stops. The drive back home was on the interstate at 55 - 60 lots of cars and trucks passed me and I don't think I passed anyone but it was a comfortable drive. Lots of people gave me the thumbs up or waved with big smiles on their faces. I had a 49 Ford F3 pickup with a 5.0 fuel injected 5 speed with 4 wheel disk brakes and modern wide radial tires ( I know it was a hot rod) and it could do 80-85 or more with no problem but that doesn't mean I would do it. It was still not as steady on the road as a modern car/truck or the 38. It had a Jaguare rack & pinion front end but was still a little unstable at 70 or above. A model A would just be crazy to try to do highway speeds and be safe for you, your family and others on the road. Go to some cars and coffee meets in your area and talk to owners maybe even get a ride or two. Check to see if a local chapter of the AACA is having a meet and talk to owners I would bet you could get rides to see how a variety of cars drive. Speed is great but every time I have a fast trip to make it always takes longer than expected just because of people asking questions about the car. So speed can be very elusive thing. Have fun
  18. Bryson just so you know the last time I talked with Robert his son was helping him out as he was having some health issues. It may take a little longer than usual to hear back from him but don't give up. He is a very nice man and seems to go out of his way to be helpful and get you the right parts. Have fun
  19. Bryson you may want to check with a fellow by the name of Robert Kapteyn at Studebaker@mac.com. He is an older gentleman that has a lot of the parts we need. He had the original wood rear seals I needed and an original speedo cable for the 38. His prices are fair and he is a very helpful nice guy. He may just have you handles. There is a fellow about 10 miles from me that also has 3 semi trailers full of parts his father purchased when Studebaker closed. If he ever gets them unloaded to where he can inventory them we may have a new source. He says he has fenders, brakes, electrical, instruments and a whole lot more. I keep checking with him every six weeks or so. If it happens I will let you know. I would be happy to check with him for anything you made need. You have to agree the road trip here would be quite an adventure. Have fun down under.
  20. Glad I was able to help. There's not a lot of us around with this year range so we have to be able to do what we can. Mine was in a barn for 40+ years all mechanicals were rebuilt and paint was just buffed out. Some areas could use reprinting but it's only original once. If your ever in the Lexington KY area I would love to see the President model. Have fun
  21. If you decide you don't want it let me know. I think it looks great in your drive. Have fun with it. Enjoy it before you decide to change anything or take it apart. I would love to find one that looked that good.
  22. I wasn't trying to be a smart a@s so I apologize if you took it that way. White walls are much whiter than natural rubber anyway. If you look at original tires that were on some cars before they added chemicals you can see the natural color. They didn't last too long as they had a tendency to dry out and crack and were solid tires Again sorry if I offended anyone. Have fun
  23. Sorry but the Natural Color of Rubber is White. Rubber is made black by adding various chemicals, such as carbon black. This isn't just for cosmetic reasons, but because adding chemicals like carbon black to the rubber drastically increases desirable qualities of the rubber.
  24. I have a 38 State Commander if that helps. I have no idea if they would be the same.
