  1. Have you ever driven a Hudson equipped with Drive-Master? How did it work? Or, maybe, not work? Forgot to ask before, has or will the resurrected convertible become a Commodore Eight?

Note A local Pontiac enthusiast is restoring one of these, tells me the survival rate is low as is the number restored in the POCI due to the unique, one-year-only powertrain. Parts for this year and model are not easy to find.
  4. If it was an Elcar, what year and model was it? This is the part I focused on most closely, could not come up with an exact match.
  5. Fortuitously, we still have one still extant so we can appreciate in person what a marvelous car and body design was created.
  6. As deep as those frame rails are, adding lateral cross-members and a bit of X-member extension was all that was necessary to build a nice, solid convertible. Its always interesting to see how cars were engineered then. I have a photo of the interior rear seat area of 1938 Packard Eight convertible sedan where one can see a massive cast brace that secures the rear body tub to the frame. Here's a little reward for showing us the build process: A '49 Hudson with the Drive-Master apparatus still in place. It showed at the 2019 Hershey in the HPOF Class. Quite a contraption, isn't it?

  8. In the mid-1920's when hydraulic brakes were introduced, just as many technological advancements, they weren't as perfected as perhaps they should have been. Real world usage revealed the deficiencies quite quickly, something the dealers would have fed back to the factory as customer complaints mounted. Reverting to a mechanical system was a stopgap solution until the problems could be resolved. There was, of course, also the motivation for manufacturers constantly seeking the lowest unit cost components. A mechanical brake supplier had motivation to reduce their brake system prices to retain their customer base in the face of the new hydraulic brake threat to their business.

  10. Did Hudson attach plates or gusset to the frame for convertibles? Or was the frame of heavier gauge steel?
  11. Wooden header bows were still a common material prewar, Packard had one with finger joints that is particularly difficult to recreate.
  12. Yes, Rather pricy for what it is and a non-running car, but "Selling for my dad to make more room in shop." After a few months of no interest and no sale, the price will become more realistic since shop space is what's needed. Chances are this price is what dad told him to ask.
  13. No, Richards and Holden were two different bodybuilding companies, to my understanding. Richards built bodies for a variety of Mopar, Studebaker and Packard chassis imported to Australia. Holden became a unit of GM, iirc, first bodymaker for imported chassis, eventually complete carmaker.
  14. Did the convertible set in a wet environment for decades? I looks as bad as those postwar convertibles left in junkyards here in the Northeast for two-three decades. Once the convertible top collapsed, it was all over, upholstery rotted, floors dissolved.
  15. "St. Regis Brougham" is the wide-door club club body style, 'Regal' refers to the wire wheel-equipped models versus the standard wood spoke wheels. The wire wheel equipped Presidents were 'State' models.

  19. Congratulations! You have one of the most capable mid-1920's cars, the first time you drive it you will be amazed. Just the spec's tells us this was exceptional for a middle-priced car: 3 7/8" X 5" 354 ci. Big Six, 75 hp in a 3,500 lbs roadster. In that era, torque @ rpm was a more valid method to judge performance capability. Others can give you driver seat perspectives, though it should be quite satisfying. A member in The Antique Studebaker Club is recommend.
  20. You might check the import laws that Argentina had with other countries where imported chassis were bodied to avoid tariffs on complete cars. Australia comes to mind where T.J. Richards built bodies for a variety of imported chassis including American. If those two countries freely traded then, importing Richards bodies for Graham-Paige chassis might have been how this car came about.
  21. Thanks, I'll have to store the four vertical radiator fins along with the slant windshield as Velie identifiers in memory. Why this small volume carmaker pioneered a slant windshield sedan before so many others is another mystery of automotive history.
