  1. Although a postwar image, NYC circa 1951-'52, but with a 1932 Studebaker still in daily use. Pre-war cars faded away quickly in those postwar years being seen as completely out-of-date and useless, except for this Studebaker owner. The other interesting car across the street is a 1949-'50 Kaiser Deluxe Virginian four door hardtop, one of the estimated 935 built.
  2. If one is pursuing a '61 Ambassador, he had better act on this car. As mentioned, the survival rate on these is very low, they rarely turn up in any condition for sale. This car is from a relatively dry area where cars appear to keep better from the bad affects usually plaguing old cars. Whatever modification have been done are easily reversed.
  3. The 1931-'33 Buick 80 shares the large 345 ci straight eight with the 90 but are shorter wheelbase. The 1932 Chrysler Imperial CH has the same 385 ci straight eight as the Custom Imperial but on the 135" wb. Both might be worth investigating. What say those with experience?
  4. The 1932 Graham 'Blue Streak' would be the first American production car with skirted fenders. It was done to streamline and unify the overall looks of the design. Although Delage and Hispano-Suiza were also 'production' cars both were far more expensive and usually custom coach-built. The skirted fenders on those would have been the designer forwarding a feature that would be picked up by other designers as "the latest thing".

  6. I use the free shareware version of www.Irfanview.com for basic cropping and image correction. Its easy to use. They may have more capable, sophisticated iterations available for purchase but try the basic version first. This is just a quick clean-up on did in a couple minutes with it.

Note: This is the Series 60 Fisher bodied sedan, one of the 1,295 sold in the U.S. (plus 12 CKD for export). Overshadowed by the stylish and seminal 60 Special, still it was the springboard to Cadillac becoming dominant in the luxury car segment just four years hence.
  8. The unrestored original is as nice a late 1920's Packard sedan is you're likely to find, and at a realistic price. The '27 club sedan is the 433, same chassis series as the 426, just the longer wheelbase, first digit is series (4th) second two the wheelbase length (126") or (133"). The club sedan would be a fine project though never to return the money or time invested, still a worthwhile project for the right person who is up to the challenge.
  9. Yes, Very strong on price, though nice condition from what few photographs were posted. The rear bumper shouldn't be mounted so far away from the rear. The luggage rack had support arms of its own as well as the bumper to rest on.
  10. REO developed the Self-Shifter with the objective of not only equipping their own cars with this advanced feature but also to produce and supply it to other automakers. Being the depth of the Depression, after shopping it to a number of other companies, there were no takers since none perceived the need for such as they were already having enough trouble selling their cars as equipped. Ironically, the year after REO quit building cars altogether to concentrate on trucks, in June 1937, Oldsmobile introduced their 'Automatic Safety Transmission' which Buick picked up for 1938. Oldsmobile would get the first Hydra-Matics for 1940, Cadillac the next year. Seems poor REO was just a bit too soon to the party...
  11. Lost interest on the part of the seller is a buying opportunity for those interested in this Thunderbird. Its worth the time and effort for those who like these Thunderbirds to potentially buy a good example for a reasonable price.

  14. If its equipped with the Self-Shifter transmission, and you own a REO with one, better avail yourself of the spare parts when the opportunity arises.
  15. I'm surprised that at minimum a 352/390 FE engine hadn't already replaced that six. Other than an automatic transmission and a two-tone (white) top, this was about as basic a full-sized Mercury as one could buy in 1962. Its a wonder they didn't trot out the 'Medalist' moniker again for the six.
  16. If the handmade pieces vary slightly from side-to-side, that's how you know its truly a coach-built body. So much of that work in the pre-war years was done by highly skilled, experienced and talented metalworkers or 'panel beaters' in English parlance. For exact mirrored shape matches, one builds tooling dies to stamp out the metal pieces, true coach building relies on the skills of the true craftsmen. Xander, you are in very proud company! Very, very few of us will ever qualify!
  17. The doors are hinged opposite to any Packard touring but the same as Studebaker Special Six and Big Six of the earlier to mid '20's. A bit of movie cosmetic work to make it appear to be a Packard would transform a cheap old Studebaker touring from a junkyard into an expendable movie prop.

  20. Absolute! Quoting one of the great lines from the M.A.S.H. television show, to say this Rolls-Royce Brewster has "Nice Lines" is like saying "Ava Gardner had nice features"!
  21. A.J. Interesting enough the body lines and overall design idiom are more consistent with the Henley roadster. I tend to consider this masterpiece design as a four door Henley sport sedan...but that just my uncultured outlook. Name it "Special Newmarket" or whatever, its easily Brewster's absolute best overall design.
