  5. The transition to all-steel body construction of necessity took place on the highest volume models first. The volume was needed to amortize the major costs of tools, dies and stamping presses capable of forming the complex shapes to meet their functions. Conversely, lower-volume models such as the convertible phaeton didn't warrant the tooling cost investments to build with all-steel construction. Promotion of the "Solid Steel Turret-Top" was pretty much only a ruse to imply that because the fabric insert had been replaced with steel, the whole body was now somehow stronger and safer. The public inferred that idea but failed to ask whether the entire lower body structure was also now all-steel construction.

  8. Craig, In the context of these early Plymouth advertisement, Walter Chrysler in the advertisement himself posed the sporting proposition to prospective low-priced car buyers to "Look at All Three" before purchasing their next new car. Ford and Chevrolet were the accepted main 'low-priced two'. Walter Chrysler was asking buyers to add his Plymouth to their primary choices before making their selection. Apparently, the appeal was quite successful by Plymouth sales volumes. Steve
  9. Congratulations! It looks like a fine example. But I have to ask, like Edward Trumbull did, did you "Look at All Three"?
  10. Be considered a miracle... The original was a medium green according to the fellow who built this recreation. The peach-color was what he had the Darrin Clipper changed to during his ownership. Remember, when Darrin built the one based on the 1941 Clipper, there were only four door Clippers available, so the body required a good deal more custom work to make a two-door basis for a convertible.
  11. AJ: Yes, it was written up in The Packard Cormorant years ago. It was built as a recreation of the sole Clipper-based Darrin victoria which the fellow had owned at one time but sold and was lost. The center diecast grille was from the original car. The original was based on a 1941 Clipper, built for Errol Flynn Steve

  19. Although the 120 model name that was applied to the 1935-'37 series denoted the wheelbase length, beginning with the 1938 restyle and revision plus the all-steel bodies, the former 120" wheelbase was increased to 127 inches. To further muddled the situation, the 120 was now named the Eight, but for 1939 the series returned to the 120 nomenclature, which it kept through 1941, to become the Eight for 1942. As part of the rationalization program instituted by President Gilman and Production Chief Christopher, the 1939 Super Eight was now built on the same chassis and body as the 127" and 148" wb 120's. This continued for 1940-'41 with the Super Eight 160 and Custom Super Eight 180. which also gained a 138" wb platform. The front axle-to-dash length is the same for all eight-cylinder models, and the front clips are interchangeable.
  20. Here is something to ponder: the 1960 Mercury Park Lane was essentially a Body-on-Frame version of the Lincoln chassis. At 126" wb and 219.2" oal, it was the size the unibody Lincoln would have to be stretch to match for 1964 and by 1966. Lincoln had been saddled with the unibody for 1958 to fill out the capacity at the new Wixom, MI plant along with the four-seat Thunderbird. The advantages of unibody construction diminished as the size of the body grew. The 1958 Lincoln was designed prior to computer analysis capability which Chrysler Corporation employed for their 1960 full-size unibody developments. The Lincoln was a 'best-guess' job when it came to where to apply additional strengthening gussets and bracing, resulting in an excessively heavy cars for their size. Unibody construction because of its complexity also limited the body style selection because of the cost to amortize over a smaller number of units for certain body styles such as longer wheelbase sedans. With Thunderbird sales burgeoning from 37K for 1958, 67K for 1959 and 92K for 1960, the Lincoln volume complicating production would seem less necessary. The Mercury Park Lane platform was ideal for a 1961 Lincoln-style re-skin to return the Lincoln to a more competitive position versus Cadillac and Imperial regarding body selection. The Mercury body already had interior dimensions consistent with other upper-medium-priced and luxury cars. The 1961 Lincoln, for all its design appeal, was woefully short on interior room, an aspect that brought a good deal of negative feedback and resulted in the 1964 wheelbase stretch to 126". The three additional inches were added to the rear seat legroom...to satisfy those complaints. The Mercury platform was discarded for 1961 as the Mercury was returned to share almost completely with the Ford through 1964.
  21. So, do we know any of the names of the designers on the Brewster staff when the American Roll-Royce cars were being designed for the Phantom I and Phantom II?
  22. Tommy: Here is the link to a PDF download of the 1939 Salesman Data book. To learn what is correct for that model year, study it for an afternoon. Literature Archive - Packard Motor Car Information (packardinfo.com) The details are what is important, these books include such in spades. Not unlikely the front clip was changed years ago because of an accident, as AJ points out, the 1940 front clip was what was readily available. Before these Packards attained desirable collector status, people repaired them with what was expedient. The white vinyl was also a less expensive, expedient choice for the re-upholstery, though a poor one. I would advise anyone pursuing this Packard to check the motor number as well to see if it is in the 1939 120 sequence. Engine numbers are located on a boss on the upper left corner of the cylinder black. Starting; B-300001. Ending: 399999. Steve
  23. John Inskip is usually credited with the Brewster design work in the 1930's. If others contributed, I'd appreciate hearing about them.
  24. The list of carmakers that utilized the 322 ci Continental 12K, 13K, 14K and 15K engine were as follows: Graham-Paige: 1928: 835; 1929-'30: 835, 827 & 837: 14K Graham: 1930-'31: 127 & 137: 14K Peerless: 1929-'30: 8-125, 12K; 1930-'32: Master & Custom Eights: 13K Jordan: 1929 Speedway Model Z: 12K (14 cars total) Mercer: 1931: 12K (two prototypes) S & S Lakewood; 1929, 15K (commercial cars) DuPont: 1929-'32, Model G & H, 12K (273 Model G & 3 Model H) Davis: 1929, Model 89, 12K Elcar: 1930-'31: 130 & 140, 12K Graham-Paige and Peerless would have been the most of the production, the others miniscule. Whether there were commercial truck applications would have to be researched.
