  1. Here are LBJ and Ladybird Johnson with their dog Yuki in a 1966-'67 Lincoln Continental convertible.
  2. "a straight 8 Ambassador and an extremely rare 37 Rumble seat Cabriolet. One of 5 or so known to exist. " I'd sure like to know more about these additional 1937 Nashes that are mentioned.
  3. LBJ was known to have been a real "lead-foot" including using his Lincolns off-road on his ranch. Chances are this convertible was subjected to some pretty hard use when he was behind the wheel.
  4. Interesting map, thanks for posting it, Walt. Beyond the Studebaker service locations, it reveals the national population distribution as of the early 1930's. Concentrations in the industrialized Northeast and Midwest around Chicago and Minneapolis were the norm. California shows the areas where development would burgeon after WWII.

  11. Thanks A.J. Indeed, we both know a great body design when we see it. This postcard image really grabbed me, absolutely the ultimate car discovery dream to find a wonderful, choice rare Packard such as this on an ordinary used car lot. Hope we're looking at one of the survivors we still have to enjoy now. Steve

  14. The car partially visible on the far right is a 1933 Cadillac. Next to the 1931 Packard is a 1933 Chrysler Imperial coupe, then a 1933 Cadillac or LaSalle convertible coupe. The Packard convertible coupe with the light-color top in the second row looks to be a 1930 733 or 1931 833.
  15. This turned up on a "Curbside Classics" website feature, a postcard of the L.F. Jacod & Co. Chrysler-Plymouth Used Car Lot, Englewood, NJ, ca 1937. That Packard isn’t just any production model, it’s a 1931 Packard Deluxe Eight 845 Newport Sport Sedan by Dietrich. It is an early 3-box sedan configuration with the passenger compartment forward of the rear axle plane and a coupe-style trunk integrated into the main body. It is the same body architecture as the Duesenberg J Arlington sedan by Rollston (The Twenty Grand). Three examples of the 1931 Packard 845 Newport Sport Sedan are still extant. Added a more current image of a 1931 Packard 845 Newport Sport Sedan by Dietrich for reference.

  17. For Sale: 1955 Bristol 405 Saloon - $84,500 CDN - Etobicoke, Toronto, Ontario, Canada 1955 Bristol 405 - cars & trucks - by owner (craigslist.org) Seller's Description: FOR SALE: a 1955 Bristol 405. This car has been in the owner's family since it was bought new in 1955. The car has been treasured throughout its life and has hardly spent a night in the open. Always kept in a dehumidified garage when in Canada. It was used extensively for high-speed touring in Europe by the owner's parents. It was imported into Canada in 1988 and has been maintained by the owner, always being stored in a heated, dehumidified garage with regular fluid changes and only occasional use.Early (in 1950s) the factory installed many modifications that included:An alternatorTwin electric fansFront Dunlop disc brakes & vacuum boostRevised air cleaners + additional tuning to improve performanceVoltmeter + temperature gaugeKoni shock absorbersetc. The car is basically original except that it has been re-sprayed 3 times, present colour (ivory) since 1960. Original leather, wood, etc. in excellent slightly worn condition. Replacement engine installed at 85,883 miles. Coopercraft 4 pot brake calipers recently added with greatly improved braking performance. A stainless-steel exhaust system by Stebro is somewhat noisy but quietens when on an open road. Current mileage over 170,000, replacement engine is in excellent condition. This car still cruises at expressway speeds carrying 4 passengers and luggage. The lightweight (2,700 lb.) and aerodynamic profile enables this speed to be achieved with its 2 litre engine. It is still capable of cruising at 100 KPH all day. Occasional use in Canada with trips to some major car shows and visits to Stratford etc.Nearly complete documented history. The owner can give any information on the car and has a nearly complete service history for the early years, along with many books on Bristols. Workshop manual, original instruction book, etc. etc. Also, many tools needed such as a BSF Whitworth socket set and wrenches. Also, many parts including gaskets, full new ignition system from Bristol, and complete original tool roll and other original parts / tools that came with the car. This gives the info on the engine, and it is period correct. The owner is not sure if is a replacement engine or if the old engine was rebuilt by Bristol. The engine type is 100B2 and the no. is #4071.Buy this car for only $84,500.00 CDN.To see many more photos, please send us your email address and we will link you to a Dropbox folder. 18. They have the look of the generic aftermarket taillights sold by Western Auto, etc. for use on commercial vehicles.
  19. Paul: Durant Motors, Inc for 1927 fielded two series of cars, the Model M four cylinder and the Model R six cylinder. The Model M sold in price competition to the concurrent Chevrolet.
  20. Here is a photo of a 1927 Star four-cylinder L-head engine, which is a Continental Motors supplied Model W5, 3.375 X 4.25" bore and stroke, yielding 152 ci. rated at 30 hp @ 2200 rpm.
  21. For Sale: 1928 Auburn Model 76 4dr Sedan - VERY rare car - $24,000 - Franklin 1928 Auburn Model 76 Sedan (VERY rare car) - cars & trucks - by... (craigslist.org) Seller's Description: Please look at this senior-owned 1928 Auburn Model 76 Sedan that has been owned by the current family since nearly new and now presents for sale. The owner is a long-standing member of the Auburn/Cord/Duesenberg Club and also owns a 1936 Cord 810 West Chester Sedan that is also currently for sale. This is a LARGE long-wheelbase sedan. Larger than a similar aged Model A for example. The Auburn is a yellow car with black trim that has been faithfully restored years ago. The vinyl roof is intact with no leaks. There are 2 or 3 small areas where the paint has cracked and may need attention at some point, but there is no profound rust on this otherwise solid car. The car still has its original rare owner's manual. The mohair-style interior and woodgrain are in exceptional condition for its vintage. All the gauges work as they should. Odometer indicates a genuine 26k miles believed to be correct/original.The headliner is intact with no "mouse hole" in the top as seen in many cars from this period. At some point, the fuel tank was properly cleaned and sealed. This is of course a 6-volt system and has not been altered. The wood-spoke wheels are in good condition with no signs of cracks or damage. The tires are outdated and 2 of them have slow leaks pursuant to age and should be replaced at some point. They are fine for local test-drives etc. There are a few Auburn-tools that go with the car, an aging car cover that goes with the car and a few promotional peripherals that the family has collected over time.At last word, there were only 2 others known to have survived and only 1 of those was a match to this rarer long-wheelbase example.Apart from the paint issues and tires mentioned, the windshield has a small corner missing. It does not interfere with the driver's viewing area and is under the front visor aspect so it's not easily discernable and doesn't let any adverse weather in. It's flat glass, so it can be replaced easily if desired. The owner's health is regrettably in decline and the family has decided to offer the car for sale in advance of any big-block auction venues. No trades please as this is part of a downsizing effort. The car is located in the Franklin, TN area. Please contact Chris for inspection/purchase: Asking $24k or near-offer in the spirit of a sale.
