  1. Grimy suggested this tread on the Best-Looking Pre-War Sedans thread, so let's run with it!
  2. If I recall correctly, the spare tire and jack are stored under the luggage basket...that thought makes anyone's back ache thinking about having to lift it out over the quarter panel sides. Chances are any Skyliner owner who ever had a flat tire had new tires installed annually in hopes to avoid that misery. Owners of 1958-1966 Thunderbird and 1958-1967 Lincoln Continental convertibles also faced that problem but they likely had Auto Club or AAA memberships just in case.
  3. I may have misidentified this Dodge, but I think it may be a 1933 Dodge Eight Model DO sedan, one of the 1,173 built.
  4. If this 1939 Dodge looks a tad odd yet familiar to American eyes, it's because it's the export Series D12 or D13 Deluxe Six. The Standard Catalog of American Cars, 1805-1942, Edited by Kimes and Clark states" "Continuing the practice of offering a junior series Dodge in the Canadian and export markets, Plymouth again supplied body, chassis and running gear to Dodge. A Dodge grille and trim gave the cars separate identity."...."...3,438 were right-hand drive,". Thanks for showing us this rarity.
  5. Steve: Do you have the Cars & Parts issues from 1970-1981 with Hugo Pfau articles about the custom coachbuilders? Definitely hang onto those! Anyone having Special Interest Autos issues from 1970-1990, drop me a message. Steve
  6. Ford Motor Co reportedly spent $2M developing the prototype retractable hardtop for the Continental Mark II to the point of a running prototype. When it was realized that at the potential sales volume for that rarified luxury coupe any profit was impossible, the project transferred for further development for the upcoming all-new 1957 Ford platform, at an additional $18M cost. At 48,394 Fairlane 500 Skyliners sold over three years, it was an expensive vanity project, though great showroom attractions to get folks in the door. Ford did derive further benefits from the development engineering applying it to the soft-top 1958-1966 Thunderbird and 1958-1967 Lincoln Continental convertibles.
  7. Thanks for sharing your photos of a great event. How many Pullmans returned to their 'birthplace'?
  8. AL: I've noted that as well. Their six-cylinder models have the radiator centered over the front axle plane. When the eight-cylinder was developed, chances are the financial condition of the company prevented them from re-engineering the chassis to allow the changes needed to keep the radiator centered on the front axle plane as it had been. It does impart a somewhat front-heavy look to the eight-cylinder series. This G-8-85 is such an appealing example, one can forgive that drawback. While wire wheels would be nice, though unavailable, simply de-emphasizing the spokes with a color change would be suitably effective. I presume this is a Philips convertible coupe body. Note: This was one of the Ford Motor Company authorized Lincoln Continental Town Coupe convertible conversions by A.H.A. Coachbuilders of Toronto, Canada. All parts were Ford Motor company factory components, the folding top mechanism last used on the 1972 Ford LTD. Because of styling changes, the top well area is a bit clumsy on the Lincoln quarters.
  11. The demand to accommodate quad headlights and tail fins issued from the Sales/Marketing Department. The 'Electrolux' low grille was done to placate Roy Hurley, Curtice-Wright president who was largely calling the shots for S-P through their 'Joint Management' agreement that came about when C-W was pushed to bail out S-P in mid-1956. Design was told to make the changes but allocated little tooling money so these are the compromises that resulted in the 1958 Studebakers and Packards presented. Duncan McRae who led S-P styling at the time described later what miserable, unhappy job it was and how dissatisfied all involved were with the results.

  13. For 1959, Mercury had dropped the "Turnpike" moniker from the "Cruiser" which now designated the pillarless hardtop body styles which had been called "Phaeton" since the 1956 model year. The unglamourous two and four door styles with the permanent upper door and window frames were still just "sedans"...

  15. The 1958 Studebakers and Packards show what a car company on the verge of bankruptcy can afford to do to somehow update their existing styling to vainly try to compete with far better financed and equipped competitors. If you read the book Champion of the Lark, Harold Churchill and the Presidency of Studebaker-Packard, 1956-1961 by Robert R, Ebert you'll understand how touch-and-go it was month-to-month throughout 1957-'58 just to keep the lights on, the employees paid and ongoing automaking operations until the compact Lark could reach the market. The 1958 Packards were largely irrelevant to the survival of the company, presented to fulfill dealer contracts and if possible, keep the Packard nameplate on the market in the event future profitability allow the creation of a proper all-new Packard. No marque nameplate, once withdraw from the market, had ever been successfully reintroduced. Some cite Rambler as an example to the contrary though the 37-year absence of was long enough to refresh the nameplate, at least for a model name.
  16. You are absolutely right, about 90% of the people selling cars are terrible at photographing their car in order to show prospective buyers what they want to see. Few seem to figure out when photographing a horizontal subject to turn their camera-phone horizontally as well and compose the frame to include the complete vehicle. Most astounding are those people who describe the car as "runs well" then photograph inside a garage. Maybe not well enough to drive it outside? The best we can do is organize their poorly composed random images into something of a coherent order one might follow if looking the car over in person.
