  1. Wood, as a material choice for chassis frame rails was over with when Franklin began the changeover for their 128"wb 1928 models. Composite body construction of steel or aluminum over wood frame structure continued into the mid-1930's for production cars, being gradually replaced with all-steel construction largely on high-volume, low-priced cars first. The reason was the upfront investments in stamping presses, tooling and dies had to be amortized over a large number of units to make the change economically feasible. Composite body construction continued in the low-volume, semi and full custom body business up to the advent of WWII for the remaining U.S. coachbuilders and much longer in European shops after WWII.

  6. John: I'm never sure how to interpret the 1951-1952 Chrysler production numbers since the company classified those model years as combined totals, even assigned the same series number such as C54 for the Imperials. The only confirmation Chrysler considered all C54 Imperial convertibles as 1951 models would be if the convertible was omitted from the 1952 Imperial sales catalog. Whatever the case, Imperial convertible buyers that year had to be hardcore, loyal Mopar men: the Imperial convertible was $440. and 11% higher priced than the concurrent Cadillac 62 convertible, which was the gold standard for luxury car convertibles. Steve
  7. The Standard Catalog of American Cars, 1946-1975, edited by John Gunnell states 650 Imperial convertibles built for the combined 1951-1952 model years.

So true! Has anyone figured out which DC Comics artist designed the Phantom Corsair? Heinz should have stuck to condiments! Bohmann & Schwartz would build whatever over-the-top silly design was presented to them...as long as it paid the bills.

Let's have a better look at that interior:
  13. The Standard Catalog of American Cars, 1946-1975, Edited by John Gunnell states an estimated 367 1951 Kaiser Deluxe Model No. K512 2dr Traveler Utility Sedan Body Style No K5120 were built. Metallic chocolate brown with tan looks great on those immediate postwar period cars.
  14. Nice Pierce-Arrow...but time for a refinish in correct period colors... The fenders and splash aprons look like metallic magenta.
  15. John: I wasn't going to repost this Mercury until I read this: "Reason for selling is we are possibly moving soon, and I wouldn’t be able to take this with us and I’d like to see it go to someone who could button it up and really enjoy it." As the moving date closes in, reality will set-in as well. Someone may then buy this Mercury for the $2K-$3K that is really what it's worth. Although it's a base Monterey, the power steering, power brakes and especially air conditioning are a plus. Steve
  16. Pure conjecture on my part, but at $1,585 factory priced for the Model EW sedan, if this Studebaker has local history, it was originally purchased by a relatively prosperous gentleman who could afford a car that with transportation charges etc might have been nearly $2,000. Perhaps a banker, businessman, rancher, mine owner, etc. to traverse the broad arid expanses in relative comfort and capable of higher speeds, much more so than a Ford, Chevrolet, Overland, Essex. Studebaker had a vast dealer network in place from their position as the number one producer of wagons, carriages, buggies in America during the 19th century. Battle Mountain, Nevada would likely have had a Studebaker dealer who took up selling cars as the world transitioned to the new mode of transportation. A Studebaker Commander, along with a Buick Master Six, or Nash Advanced Six, or Willys-Knight 66 were all solid, respectable choices for the prosperous if modest gentleman and his family.
  17. This is the interior of this progressively styled 1930 Jordan Speedway Model Z Ace roadster, the designer of which is a mystery. Given the multiple advanced details possibly was one of the major designers active at the time creating this design as a consultant to Jordan.
  18. A little darkening and sharpening make it look more immediate:
  19. Next to the convertible at 684 units, the 9-passenger station wagon is the second rarest 1962 Custom 880.
