Restorer32
Bought a beautiful old heavy steel stop sign at a farm sale over the weekend. It is yellow. I don't remember yellow stop signs. Can anyone enlighten me?
Guest Hal Davis (MODEL A HAL)
I used to see them years ago when I was kid (late 60's early 70's). They were old then. Usually only saw them on back roads where the highway department hadn't gotten things updated.
Pontiac59
At one time most of them were yellow, or yellow with a black band. Some had reflectors in the letters. They turn up for sale now and then.
Guest BruceW
The following URL gives a short but interesting history on the evolution of the American stop sign from its original white and black design to the modern red octagon:http://signalfan.freeservers.com/road%20signs/stopsign.htm
Jim Bollman
I grew up in the 50s and 60s in rural Ohio and yellow stop signs were the norm. I decided a few years ago I wanted to find one for the wall of the shop. I had more people tell me that there never was such a thing. Then I found a NOS pre reflector 1948 yellow stop sign at Hershey. I could actually see it from my space.Of course since it is a perfect NOS, people still don't believe me they think it is fake. Can't win.
Dave@Moon
In the small, old Pittsburgh suburb of Swissvale on a very busy street (S. Braddock Ave.) there were still 3 yellow stop signs in use well into the 1980s. They were notorious ticket-traps, set on small roads that didn't really need stop signs and often ignorred because of the yellow color and their non-relective coating. They didn't look like real traffic signs. They each had quaint individual lights illuminating them--25 watt bulbs in a small, reading-lamp type reflector. At night you could almost tell they were there. I think they were finally removed somewhere around 1990. Modern red reflective stop signs now are mounted on the same stands. The lights standards are still there, although they no longer run the lights. Restorer32
This one is in new condition and I only paid 2 bucks for it. Yellow with a black band, very heavy steel. I seem to remember black and white stop signs but not the yellow. Now to find a bare spot on the wall to hang it.

supersix
I remember seeing the first RED stop sign. It was in the early fifties and were were going to see Grandma in my Dad's '51 Hudson.
Guest LeSabre Nut
I remember seeing them. A friend of mine had one on his farm. It was in great condition. I asked his dad if I could have it. I still have 25 years later and it hangs in my garage with Buick banners I have gotten from dealerships. It has been a conversation starter.
