I don't know if anyone noticed but there is a 1990 white Reatta convertible that is going to go thru the Barrett-Jackson auction next week in Scottsdale. In the description of the car I didn't see any milelage noted. Is anyone familiar with the car? It will be interesting to see what it sells for.

From my experience in watching this show... the cars from the 80's 90's and new don't really go for much. There was a 94-5 Ford Mustang pace car that went for ply 30,000. It only had 15,000 miles. Then next a Plymoth belvadier GTX or what ever it was went for other 100,000 dollars. I think that we have to wait for them to really get what they are worth, but I may be wrong.

I'll be attending the auction next week. I noticed the 90 reatta (w/91 wheels) a few weeks ago and posted a question about it on this site at that time listing the VIN. Lot #27 should go across the block on Wednesday. I'll try to get as much info on it as possible and post it when I return after the 25th.

Having fun in the sun.

I looked at the car being auctioned online. It is a white convertible. It says it is a 1990 but is has different wheels on it than my 1990 red convertible. Did they have different wheels on the 1990s or do they have the wrong year on the Barrett-Jackson website?

Are the wheels white? Does it have black body side moldings?...if so, it may be a Select Sixty ?????

AND if so, the outcome or results of the auction may help to answer/resolve (or at least shed a little light) some of rarity and value questions / controversy. Of course if it is, there will also always be plenty of varibles to take into consideration such as condition and mileage......

I just went to the BJ Site and couldn't find out anything either. Did notice from the pictures that:

Is not a Select Sixty...BUT - The car looks to be a "Teddy Bear"....Oustanding looking and with gray interior!

Has 1990 running gear or at least engine....

Appears that the dealer installed some silver '91 wheels.

Just looks well taken care of...probably Veeery low miles and probably veeeery nice....

1990 BUICK REATTA CONVERTIBLE

Lot Number: 27

Options

Engine: 231

Transmission Type: AUTOMATIC

Horsepower: 160

Cylinders: V6

Exterior Color: WHITE

Interior Color: GRAY

Description

As a former Buick dealer(retired 1996 Niles Auto Co, Santa Rosa, Ca) I ordered this Reatta from the factory and drove it as a demo. I loaned it to our local Buick zone for 2 East/West Shrine football games at Stanford. My wife drove it for a short period. It's been in 2 Concourses and garaged its whole life! In the late 80's when GM owned Lotus car Co. the Reatta was a combination of a Lotus body and Buick chassis and running gear. Thus the "LB" in the serial number.

The car looks really nice but the LB does not mean that it was a Lotus body. When I look up the vin number in the manual, the L is the model year and the B is the plant where the car was built. B=Lansing Michigan. I dont think that it has anything to do with Lotus body, but I could be wrong, but if Barrett Jackson is publishing the wrong info then it is sad. They are supposed to be the experts. If they get this wrong how much else can they get wrong. If I were spending many thousands of bucks I would want to know exactly what I was buying. The guy who purchased the car got a nice car but he doesnt have the whold truth.

This is a prime example of BAD INFORMATION given out by someone that should know better. Just because they worked on the program or sold the cars does not mean they KNEW everything or REMEMBERED everything.

Just yesterday I had lunch with a fellow that worked on a Special Vehicles Activity team and was responsible for the Reatta doors. He spent time in England at Hawtal-Whiting (the company that did the engineering work that GM did not have the resorces to do) he retired in 1987 and then worked another 10 years as a contractor. Anyway, he told me that GM did not sell ANY convertibles to the public because of the structural problem and only sold them to employees. We all know that there were lots of 1990 convertibles sold to the public and a few 1991..... so again, a person that was "on the site" but had bad information.

How this Reatta got "built" by Lotus is one persons bad story.

Response I received today when queried BJ on the particulars and mileage on the convertible:

Thank you for your interest in the upcoming Barrett-Jackson auction.

We received your request for more information on a car in our auction, but unfortunately, the consigner has only supplied the information that is posted on the website.

Most, if not all, owners will be on site at the auction so we welcome you to ask them any questions when you come to the event.

Best regards,

Stephen DeVita

The way the Barrett-Jackson program works, the price the buyer pays is the closing bid price plus the Auction Fee/ Commission. In this case $20,800. so BJ collect 10%. The Seller walks away with his $19,000 minus whatever registration Fees he paid BJ to list the car.

Two Days in and they'd already grossed $20,000,000. Assume they're grabbing 12% so 2.4 Million plus advertizing, profits on BJ products, Bar take. And these are the slow days. I think I heard they expect 100 million in sales.

BJ makes out like a bandit!

Well fly in massive numbers of glitterati, make sure they are well lubricated (bidder's ticket includes a host bar), provide many bright shiney objects, and apply lot of in-your-face peer pressure (watch the "assistants" - somebody acted like that on the street and they would get decked - half the time they are waiving at the person next to the bidder) and the "Alpha Male" syndrome takes over.

Not to say they couldn't have!

Go back to 2007 and read where the "LB" reference came from. It was quoted according to BJ as coming from the owner, "A Car Salesman"

Nuf said!
