tbirdman
One funny note. I was filling up at a gas station last night with my T-Bird. One attendant was admiring the Bird. Another one comes over and says??Very nice car and you wouldn?t believe it but a beautifull 32 Packard was in here last week. You don?t see many of those?. Of course I had to let him know both were my cars. The attendent had forgotten that I was driving the Packard. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
Guest Randy Berger
You should have said, "Yeah the Packard driver is a great guy too!" <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Guest JT
Now they're probably waiting to see what you're going to drive in next week <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I'm probably filling up at least once a week during the summer.
mrpushbutton
Tbirdman--your post reminded me of one of my favorite Frank Sinatra stories (I'm a big Frank fan) He was obsessed with cleanleness, showered many times a day and hated touching paper money, because it was "dirty". he carried only $100 bills, neatly folded in a money clip, and handed them out as tips. One evening in the early 60's as he left a restaurant on the strip he asked the valet that had just brought his dual ghia up "what's the biggest tip you ever got?" the young man answered "A $100 bill", whereupon Frank reached into his pants pockets and peeled off TWO $100 bills to Duke the young man. He handed them to the valet in his usual discreet handshake and asked him "who gave you the $100 tip?" the valet answered "you did, last week"." <span style="font-style: italic">It's Frank's world,we're just allowed to live in it"</span> Dean Martin, 1960
K8096
That reminds meof the time we had our Twelve at a local gas station to get air in the tires (this was when gas stations still had free air) and a smart alec 16 year old kid gas jockey comes up & says "whut's it gut in it, eh big six?" You should have seen the look on his face when I told him, "no, it's a V-12" Priceless.

Though the pump jockeys are very respectful and most of them shake off the nozzle so no gas is dripping. Some hand me the pump handle with a paper towel. It's actually illegal to pump your own gas in Oregon, but I do it all the time. The T-Bird is a necessity to pump because the pump handle will fall out if not held. K8096
What kind of crazy environmentalist law did they pass in Oregon? How many gas stations have been sued for gas spilling on paint & damaging it on either a new car or an antique?

Packard Don
I used to have fun taking my mid-60s Imperials to the station. They had the filler hidden behind an emblem at the center of the bumper. Of course, my '54 and '56 Cadillacs were fun too with it in the taillight. Probably the funniest was the expression of the young attendant filling one of my mid-'50 Packards with the whistle in the filler tube. He kept stopping and checking the nozzle to see what was wrong! "Doesn't New Jersey have that same law in effect for many years?Owners cannot fill their own vehicles?I moved from there to Louisiana back in 1969, and after several other moves, came back to stay in 1976.When we drove the 1912 Oakland, the gas fill was under the driver's seat cushion.Of course the 1941 and 1954 Cadillacs have theirs behind the left taillight, and the '70 Caddy has it behind the rear license plate. When I was a teen in the '50s we all knew where each of the models hid their fill, and I later was fortunate enough to drive a '56 Chevy Bel-air convertible in my college years. The chrome bar above the left tail light lens would rotate a quarter turn counter-clockwise, and the entire tail light assembly would tilt downward, exposing the filler. No such problems with our 1930 Packard 733, as long as one remembers to look around the trunk, and move the bail-wire. trimacar
Here's a gas station story....There was a small service station in Lecompte, Louisiana (pronounce la-count). The station was owned and run by a grumpy old man. This was in the days when he'd pump gas, check the oil, and sometimes reach for a whisk broom and get the big stuff off your carpet. One day he was in a particularly grumpy mood, because he'd laid his whisk broom down in a customer's car, and the fellow had driven off.About that time a little old lady drove up to the pumps, and when he went to her window she timidly asked "Where's your rest room?"Thinking she'd said "whisk broom", he gruffly told her "Don't have one anymore, just step out of the car and I'll blow it out with my air hose....." CHAD THOMAS
Went with dad years ago to a local station that had a few old cars around and they pumped gas. Dad and I had a good time as he circled the car twice looking for a cap.....We got out and raised the hood. 1931 American Austin. Not the best place to mount the filler, if you spilled it went on the engine and exhaust!
