Steve Moskowitz
As most of you know, if you earn 5 preservation tabs with the same car, you are eligible for a participation award. This award has been a mug, a oval shaped tray, a smaller "scalloped" tray and this year we went back to the mug. I have heard that at some round table mmetings that members felt the mug was cheaper, however, it is only pennies cheaper. The change was meant to give members a variety of different AACA commemoratives. It was also my thinking that the mug was more useful as it could be a desk item for pens, etc. We are about to re-order and sure would like to hear more opinions. Call me, write me, email me or post here. Also, we have found a better procedure to engrave the preservation wheel tabs and we will have the meet information on the 2005 tabs. Guest
Steve ~ I have the mugs, and both types of trays. I have no idea where the trays are, but the mugs hold pencils. I have honestly never used a mug to hold liquid, but then I have never used a tray to hold food. Whatever you do, someone will want something else. You could always suggest that the manufacturer raise the price of the mugs to slightly more than the plates, and then when asked you could say that it is a more expensive item. hvs
Steve Moskowitz
Thanks Howard, I was sure we use to have mugs back in the early 80's as I was saving for one mug and one plate. Some people said we never had them before!
kuhner
That answers a question I have been thinking about posting. I have four preservation tabs now and after mounting my fourth I thought what was the "special" award. Now I know. If its worth anything I would like the mug. I'm a practical kind of guy!greg
Dynaflash8
I suggest that after every 5 years you switch. That way if somebody shows their vehicle at least one time in each of the 5 years, or 5 times during the 5 years they will possibly get something different each time. My four pewter plates (different sizes) are displayed in my garage with the car, and I don't have a mug. Bring on the mug.
Friartuck
I would recommend being practical. Mugs or smaller ornament style awards are easy to display, trays are not. The CCCA trophy of etched glass in a wooden holder is another possibility. Perhaps just the Durea or create a "newer" icon just for preservation. Overall, think small with a touch of elegance. Guest MJJones
Steve,It appears that responses are leaning toward having both the plate and the mug. There are some members, like Marshall VanWinkle (New Bern, NC) who will need a separate building to house his participation awards with the 100's of preservtions he has accumulated on the two cars he shows religiously. It might even be reasonable to offer a third choice, soometime down the line, and give member's the opportunity to choose which award they want when submitting their required five preservation cards. As for me, Marcy has restricted the number of trophies, banners and plaques at the house. So many of mine are in the garage and car trailer. Peter J.Heizmann
Steve...I concur with Mike about offering a choice. Personally, I have 2 plates and would like to keep the awards within the same type.Regards,Peter J.
Steve Moskowitz
Mike and Peter, I agree that it would be great to offer both but I will have to look at the costs since we have a minimum quantity of 100. It might be within our financial means to do,as long as one item is not vastly more popular than the other.
Shop Rat
What about a nice certificate and a specially designed pin for that year that could be displayed on a hat, jacket or shirt like the judging award pins? Then if people wanted they could mount the pins on a display of their choice when they got a new one to wear.
Steve Moskowitz
We do certificates and pins for other programs, it would not be appropriate for this one. Our members deserve a nice award for bringing out their Preservation Award Winners many times. I am leaning to offering both the mug or plate and think that financially the club can accomplish this. Shop Rat
Oh okay. Not knowing that certificates and pins were done other than for judging points, I thought it might be something that people could show off where ever they went. And some people expressed here, as have other people I know, that they were overrun with trophys and awards and had run out of room for them. So I was trying to come up with something nice, not a huge price and smaller.
Peter J.Heizmann
Steve, I can appreciate your info on minimum economical runs coming from the metalworking industry myself. Certainly would be a lower price to order 500 mugs, vs, 250 plates/250 mugs.At this point, my vote is for what the majority requests, and, the most economical for our club. Let's see what this thread generates.Regards,Peter J.
Guest imported_klb
I'm curious, how many Preservation awards does the club give out each year?
1937hd45
I've got a right handed mug on the shelf, any thoughts of making a run of left handed mugs to balance out the plate in the center of the shelf?
Guest greg72monte
I am fairly new to this, just receiving my Senior in 2003 and my2nd preservation at Hershey this year. I was looking forward to the plate as a preservation award. However, I will be grateful for any award, going from nothing to 2nd preservation in a short two years. Steve Moskowitz
On average 70 awards are given out each year. Bob, I'll work on the left handed handle idea! Peter, 500 would be too expensive of a proposition and the price break between 100 and 200 is not significant. OlJalopy
Good Morning, Steve ~Back in the good old days, when the program started with the first National Spring Meet of '81, only the plate was available. Within a couple of years, the mug was added as a choice. The bottom line of the information/order card that came in with envelope with the Wheel Tab was: "Five credits are needed for one award of a plate or a mug. Please circle your choice."I alternated between plates & mugs, and have three sets on the shelf. Somewhere along the line I stopped sending the cards in. Have about 15-20 in the pile. Thanks for reminding me about them. I'll have to send 'em in.My vote is to keep or reinstitute the choice. The plate & mug look good together. Steve Moskowitz
Thanks for the history lesson! I agree, we can do this so we will! Our goal is to make our members happy whenever we can.
D Binger
Steve,Another history lesson about AACA awards. The first few years there was a Grand National Meet they gave out the Gold Duryea trophy. The first were like the Sr Dureya but gold and the 2nd and 3rd were like the 2nd and 3rd Jr but with a gold trophy heads. They looked great. From what I have been told, they were very expensive, so they have changed to the wall plaque. Attatched is a picture of the one I have.Dan
Steve Moskowitz
Dan, yes I have one also that I won. They were expensive but the new trophy is extemely expensive as well, and is not a plaque although the senior, 2nd and thirds are placques at the moment.
