American car exhibition at Tommy's diner (France)

Recommended Posts

Hello, on Sunday June 2 we went to an American car show at Tommy's Diner in Montauban in the south of France not far from my home.
I went there with my brother with my 1978 Dodge Monaco police, and my parents came with their 1941 Buick eight Special 46S.

Arrived at 9am

An impressive collection of cars there.

A number of cars in your photos have license plates that are close to the North American standard shape and size and painted to look like they are from a specific US state but are not real. At least not real in terms of sequence numbers ever used here and not being exactly correct for graphics, lacking expiration stickers, etc. What are the laws regarding this? Are they EU/French registration numbers simply formatted differently than normal? For example: 20240602_144702.jpg.18e9b305291988414a4d

Yes we had a great day, there were a lot of American cars and there was American music all day.
It was great ! :)

Hello and thank you ! :)
People's favorite cars are the old ones and also the new ones.
I like American cars from the 1900s to 2024, and I drive all year round mainly with my 1978 Dodge Monaco.
As a new car to drive every day, I wanted to buy a 2016 V8 Dodge Challenger, but in France they are expensive and I bought a 2012 Subaru BRZ (it was cheaper). but the last few years I drove a lot more with my Dodge, I didn't drive a lot with the Subaru.
Right now I know someone looking for a 2010 Jeep, and I know someone else looking for a 2010 Cadillac Escalade and a 2008 Dodge Durango.
And I have a friend who just purchased a beautiful 1977 Chevrolet Caprice.
One day I would like to have a 1959 Buick Electra, a 58 Dodge, a 58 Impala, ...
People here in France are interested in all American cars :)

You should have taken a picture of your police car "in hot pursuit" of the General Lee!

Can you get "Dukes of Hazzard" re-runs on French TV?

Haha yes it would be great to take this photo! ;)
I know the owner of General Lee, he is very nice.
He even installed the Dukes license plates! :) and he drives all year round with his license plates (so far the police have said nothing).
Once at a car show I was parked next to General Lee, and a third person came with Boss Hogg's Cadillac! :)
At the time when it was broadcast on TV in America, it was also broadcast on French TV, and a lot of people in France know the dukes :)
Now they are no longer broadcast on TV, but they are selling the box set of the entire Dukes season, and I bought the box set. I'm on the 5th season of Dukes of Hazzard :)
And a lot of people say to me "there's Sheriff Rosco!!" when they see me, and others say Rosco's phrase "he's happy Rosco !" :)

In France the law says that you must have license plates with numbers/letters with "dashes" between each number.
But the law does not specify the format of the registration plate, nor the design. And on an American car you want to have American registration plates. And on the internet you can make registration plates that look a lot like the ones you see in America, but with French numbers.
But parents we made California plates for their Buick 41 and I for my Buick 69 I will choose Utah registration plates :)
Here is a French site where we can make our license plates :

There appears to be a far larger following of American cars in France than there are those who collect French cars here in North America!!   One sure doesn't see a huge amount of vintage Renaults, Peugeots, Citroens, or Panhards at a show here!

Was this Skylark also sold new in France like your Buick and that '69 Camaro was?  Hard to see, but it does appear to have a km/h speedometer.

One thing I have noticed when you show pictures of the shows you attend is the demographic. There seems to be equal across the board a mix of female, male and even 'kids' (People under 20). Also, it seems that the majority of people there seem to be say under 60? When I go to car shows in my area it is by far mostly male and over the age of 60. Also, it seems that there is always a large group of people mingling about, looking at all of the cars with interest. Again, my experience is a guy will park his car, set up the lawn chair and remain in place until the trophies are called🤔 Looks like you guys are having a lot more fun of it!!

There appears to be a far larger following of American cars in France than there are those who collect French cars here in North America!!   One sure doesn't see a huge amount of vintage Renaults, Peugeots, Citroens, or Panhards at a show here!

Craig

Yes, it's true, you're right ;) , here there are a lot of people who like American cars and other old European cars too.
Today I was working in a town near my house, I heard a V8, I turned around and it was a friend with his very nice 1978 Chevrolet Caprice :) , and I also saw a 2005 mustang and a dodge ram from the 2010s today (it's rare to see three American cars on the same day, sometimes we don't see any American cars for 1 month, it depends)
And last week I came across a very beautiful Lincoln limousine from the 2010s on the road :)

I think this Buick was sold new in France in 1964, like my Buick and the Camaro.
We can see on the windshield of this skylark old French insurance stickers / stickers with the years "93, 94, 95, 96 and 97", and I think that this Buick has not been driven since 1997 and that the new owner repair it now in 2024, this is the first time I see this Skylark.
And yes you are right, it has a speedometer in km/h ;)
Barn finds aren't often found, and a barn find of an American car is an even rarer find.

Thank you so much ! :) Yes there are people of all ages, from children aged 1 to people over 60 years.
There are a lot of young people, and a lot of young people that day had an American car.
A young man from my village (a friend) who is 20 years old dreams of having a 1970 Camaro, like the one in the film "Transformer" and he came to see me for information. He has a lot of information and wants to buy a Camaro of this generation :) .

Thank you so much ! yes we really appreciate days like this :)
This weekend with my brother and my Dodge, we went to a small car parts exchange/sale in the morning, then afterward we joined family at the restaurant, then we came back, we drove 100 kilometers ( 62 miles ) in the morning and early afternoon, it was good :) .
And this Sunday, June 23, I'm going to an American car show in "Lapenche" near Toulouse, but my parents will also come with their Buick 41, we have about 1 hour 20 minutes' drive :)

Now THAT is how a mid-seventies Corolla SR is supposed to look; without the ugly 5-mph bumpers that destroyed the looks of most cars sold in North America from that era.

Yes it's a shame that for imports it was necessary to modify vehicles, which no longer had the original appearance

Thank you again for all the effort you take and make time for to take photographs so that the rest of us can be entertained from our homes and "be in France" at the car shows there. The scenery in the back grounds behind the cars is wonderful , just great to see women and children walking around and looking at the cars to , much more so then here in the states, at least on long island.
