LLola
Hi. Can someone tell me the top speed for the 1948 post-WWII Packard? From online images, looks like the speedometer went up to 110, yes? What I can't tell is whether any manufacturing run of the 1948 Packard included the "Goddess of Speed" hood ornament. Also, did it come with the exterior "sun visor" across the top of the windshield? Is that what that's called? Air conditioning? Thanks a million. Edited March 30 by LLola forgot something (see edit history)
TerryB
There are three engines available in 1948. They are all flathead in-line 8 cylinders. The largest is 356ci, the middle is 327ci and the smaller is 288ci. Horsepower is 160, 145 and 130 respectively. In-line 8 cylinder engines are great for torque over speed. All are rated at 7 to 1 compression ratio. The sun visors were optional accessories. It seems most Packards have the Cormorant bird hood ornament but there are photos online that show a version of the goddess of speed hood ornament. An eBay search of 1948 Packard sales brochures will help answer some of your questions as many brochures available have key information pages displayed as part of the ad.
60FlatTop
I used to refer to the hood ornament on my 1948 Packard as The Big Chicken.

bryankazmer
Air conditioning was discontinued after 1942, not available in 1948
bryankazmer
The number on the speedometer has zero engineering influence. I would think that a Custom Eight 2 door Club Sedan with the 356 and overdrive would be the fastest variant for the 22nd series
Rusty_OToole
Top speed of a 1948 Packard sedan would be about 90 - 95 MPH when new. Sun visor was an accessory, it could have been added by the dealer (at extra cost) or put on by a local garage.
