1962 Pontiac Tempest Lemans 4x4x4 - cars & trucks - by owner -... (craigslist.org)

Seller's Description:

I am selling my 1962 Pontiac Tempest Lemans sports coupe 4x4x4. The 4x4x4 means 4-cylinder, 4 speed, 4-barrel carburetor. It moves and looks pretty good for being 61 years old. The red interior is in great shape, but the front seats need recovered. This car has half of the 389 V8. The combination of the 4 cyl. and 4-barrel carb with the 4-speed manual is pretty rare. The miles show 52K miles, but I cannot verify that. I am asking $7,500.00 or best offer.  If the posting is still on-line the car is available.

How much horsepower does a 1963 Pontiac Tempest 4x4x4 have?

Originally, the Tempest four-cylinder engine made 115 horsepower. With a high compression ratio and a four barrel carburetor, hp was up to 166 horsepower (10.25 compression ratio) by 1963.
An available option was an aluminum 215 cid V-8, as were cast iron V-8s of 326 or 389 cid.

I had one decades ago with the automatic transmission (if it had a 4-speed, I would still have it!).

A previous owner must have thought the car was a racer, as when I got it, the engine came with the rare Super Duty Carter AFB which was entirely too large for the street. The car was doggy at lower speeds. The original carb was less than 400 CFM, the SD was 625 CFM.

Switching to the correct size 4-barrel really woke up the car, and for a dogmatic, it was pretty peppy!

Just couldn't like the dogmatic transmission, and sold it.

A friend of mine owned a '62 Tempest back in the early '70's. It had the 4 cyl. with 3 speed manual and was quite peppy. My understanding is the 4cyl. was 1/2 of a 389 V8.

Was a fun car to drive although the shifter had slop in it and didn't feel precise.

A wonderful example of early 60's creative engineering! Not just the engine but the transaxle and the connecting "Rope Drive", all wrapped in a nicely styled package.

Wow, those horsepower ratings are more impressive than I would've guessed. Thanks for that info. I'd like to ride in one some day.
