STUTZ SPEEDWAY SIX. ENGINE

Recommended Posts

First, thank you for trying to get this engine to someone that can use it, or even may need it desperately!

Location is VERY important! Shipping can be problematical, and arranging proper handling is very much affected by location.

Beyond that, engines of this sort, desirable to some extent, bordering on the exotic, and to some extent, also a bit rare? Are very difficult to arrive at a "reasonable " price. The value/price on something like this is not like a model A Ford, or even a 1930s Dodge. Those are common enough that one can find comparable sales by geographic areas and determine a current fair price. Cadillac of the 1920s are moderately common, and sometimes need better engines to rebuild, still, most Cadillac owners don't want to clutter their limited storage space with engines they likely will never need.

Stutz? Is a bit trickier to place a value on. The price/value really is a range, and a wide range at that! There is a value to a Stutz owner that needs a better engine to rebuild! And there is a "value" to someone wanting to sell such an engine, hoping to find that owner that really needs one! And realistically, those numbers are not the same. Potential sellers often begin high, and then lower their expectations as time passes. There is another value, that of passing something as special as a Stutz engine on to someone that eventually gets it to someone that needs one.

It generally isn't that hobbyists are trying to make a bunch of money on such things. Most hobbyists already have the proverbial ton of parts they will never use, but cannot easily sell. Most of them cannot afford (either by space or dollars or both!) to add another big heavy piece to their already too much stuff! Especially if that big heavy piece might be tough to find someone that actually needs it. So the "sell it quick" value is much lower than the "Stutz owner that needs it value". Often, hobbyists sell items they do not need for far less than they could get just to help get someone else's car back on the road.

Stutz is a remarkable marque, from the first ones to the last ones they are great cars and have an enthusiastic following. There are a handful of Stutz experts, people that might know of people looking for better engines or parts, and what they would be willing to pay. Perhaps one of those will see this thread and offer an opinion on value.

George A is a longtime dedicated hobbyist, that has helped a lot of people find rare parts they needed. I have found him to generally be very fair. You might want to consider his offer?

This version of the STuTZ overhead valve 6 cylinder engines was only used in a 1924 and 1925 STuTZ cars.  There were thee different versions of these engines used from 1923 to 1925. There are only a few of these cars listed with the STuiTZ Club and all are running cars.  An engine in this condition would, in my opinion, be a parts engine rather than a canidate for rebuilding.  I would also like to know the location of the engine and if there is a starter, water pump, generator and distributor included.
