A fun collection of "Is that really the asking price?"

Hi All,

From time to time we post some auction cars that .. well .. just aren't quite the mound of gold that the owner thinks it is. So I thought I'd start a thread that maybe we can all contribute to once in a while when we see things like a parts car being auctioned with a reserve of $9000. I think we should also expand the thread to illiterate classic car owners with interesting descriptions that would make for an interesting read.

Here's a pricy one with a pretty funny description as well. I mean this guy is really sure of himself:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...p;category=6152

Maybe we can get the site moderator to 'pin' this thread so we can add to and find it more readily.

Cheers!

A corollary thread for outlandishly priced parts ain't a bad idea either. One outfit in California (name withheld to protect the guilty) is rapidly attaining legend status in the Oldsmobile world for their opening bids/buy-it-now prices on NOS Oldsmobile stuff.

<span style="font-weight: bold">AND IDIOTS ARE BUYING IT!!!</span> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I mean, $99 for a 73-77 Cutlass ashtray?

Mebbe I should start selling off all me NOS junque.

Crin, thanks for the link to these abominations. Yep, I'm real sure that '59 Cadillac lovers would consider the "roadster" to be the ultimate addition to their car collections!

Interesting that the car has been on Ebay for more than a week and no one has submitted a bid.

The Pontiac is even more ghastly!

Crin,

Although the seller doesn't mention it, it's pretty obvious the 59 Caddy started life as a 4-door.

I don't get it. If the guy was so embarassed by having a 4dr, he should have sold it to someone that would appreciate it....instead of butchering the hell out of it! <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> And of course, the price is even funnier than the car!! <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Yeah, that Cadillac "roadster" is pretty bizarre looking. The proportions are all wrong. I have a hunch he did all the easy stuff and realized that things like the top, upholstery and getting all the trim to look right was just too much of a headache and bailed out. I think that car is now destined to never be finished, and will probably end up rotting away behind someone's garage.

I greatly enjoy seeing people who think that they have a highly-sought-after car that should be worth a pile of cash, but isn't (see the guy with the 1929 Buick sedan that is the "only one with the street rod conversion!!"). I wonder if reality ever crashes in or if they just figure that nobody can appreciate their "art."

Just because you've got a lot of money in it doesn't mean that you'll get a lot of money out of it. If you're trying to make money with a car you've restored/modified/hacked, I hope you have a good day job to pay the bills.

Matt, you're so right. When someone finds out that Teresa and I are into old cars, I tell them that our hobby is to restore them then, sell them at a loss. I think the closest we've ever gotten to 'making' money on a car that we restored and then sold was our 1960 Fleetwood that we sold for about 100 dollars less than what we had in it.

I just love looking on eBay and finding these 'treasures'. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Here's another favorite of mine:

http://www.cars-on-line.com/76cad4310.html

It's been for sale for a while now. Imagine that! Now it seems to me that Cadillac owners seem to chop their cars more readily than anyone else. Well, I can't talk about Chevy owners because I never look at Chevy stuff. It takes too long - way too much stuff out there.

What kind of abomination is that GTO? You probably can't drive it legal on the street and if you can how the hell do you see past that monstrosity in the engine compartment. WAY2RAD is a very apt description!!!! The guy obviously has a lot more dollars than cents (sense). <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

They should have a contest on E-Bay. They could name it THE MOST FUNNIEST AUCTIONS. Are these guys serious? First, the Caddy! Does this person who spent over $35,000 on this funny car realize what kind of turn-key 59 Caddy he could have bought for almost half of that money? Notice the rear skirts! They look like they will be part of the lower door. Now as far as the GTO, he simply ruined it......A pimps racing machine!!!! It's pathetic.....

Crin, You sure are right about there being toooo much Chevy stuff out there!! It gets kind of aggravating. So you know what I do when I take my old 69 Riv out to car shows? On the information form you have on your dash during the show,.....where it says "Outstanding Features"....I simply put......

It's not a Chevy or a Ford! That kind of gets to them! <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

I'ts just amazing to me what people will buy at auctions, I went to a Kruse auction this past summer. They roll up this 63 Cadilac convert, triple white. As the action was proceeding the blue smoke was pouring out of the exhaust, and you could see the shower of fluid pouring out of the raditor. The car sold for over 7,000 dollars!! I could go on and on but it was hilarious to see the potential "money pits" and bondo queens selling for top buck. Don't get me wrong there was some nice metal also but the clunckers were there too.

Oh my God! That last one made me laugh outloud! Everyone here at work is looking at me funny right now because I'm still laughing.

I like this one too:

Check out the vehicle description ... "The interior is 'OK'" ... does that look like an OK interior to you guys/gals?

Keep them coming - this is so entertaining!

Cheers!

Folks I sold my caddy, that my wife had to have, and I actually made money on the deal I thought, about $800.00. After the seller left, I counted the money, that my wife had gotten from the seller, and it was a grand short. Boy was i mad, then the wife informed me her and her sister were going to CT in two weeks and thoght it would be nice if I paid for the adventure. They had a good time and peace shines on my garage.

I just looked at this thing again--he's dropped his opening bid by $50,000! I wonder what the reserve is... Still no bids. I stand by my guess that he'll be lucky to get $10 or $15,000 for it.

Ebay Eldorado

As the former owner of a '76 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible, I gotta say this guy is really dreaming (he might match the guy with the '29). And to illustrate my point perfectly, he figures that it's worth about what he's put into it in repairs (though I seriously doubt that he spent $4500 replacing the convertible top, glass window or not). Did he even look at what other used Eldos are going for ($4500-10,000 for nice cars). Another no-bid, no-sale on Ebay, I'm sure.

I did a similar amount of work on my own car, and sold it for a HUGE loss (a fraction of what this guy is asking).

I actually think that guy with the Suburban will sell it for close to what he's asking. These trucks are red-hot with the truck crowd, and it is a relatively rare piece. I like them, though trying to feed one these days (a 50 gallon tank!) would cost more than my mortgage.

But I have no doubt that this truck will be purchased and reincarnated as something pretty cool.

I think the Pontiac would be a great car to finish up. Mostly rust free. That's the best part. If I were younger...........!

I'd be suprised to see that 'Burb go for more than $5000. Although it's in fairly nice shape and has a new motor, it's a 3/4 ton 2WD. Basically, it's a half breed.

The people who are buying 2WD's only want 1/2 tons and they'll only want a 3/4 ton in a 4WD. It's kind of a weird combination, but I'd be happy to have it in my driveway!

This one's scary...

http://www.streetrodding.com/sr/?fuseaction=dsp.cars&id=8061

'38 Chrysler Royal Roadster street rod? Maybe it's just me, but dropping a 305/350 in any car doesn't make it a street rod! I'm a street rodder and I'm pretty open to all potential street rod candidates, but this one needs a lot more work before it would be allowed to attend a rod run... and a big price drop too!!!

Don't miss that it's a sleeper, as is any 6000 pound car with a 305!

<img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> Here's the letter I sent the guy with the '41 Special on Ebay:

Hello,

I was extremely disappointed to see that you have plagarized my web page(http://www.harwoodperformance.bizland.com/1941buick/index.html) in your Ebay auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?viewItem&item=2406517069&category=6144) for a 1941 Buick Special. If you had asked, I would have given permission to use the text, no questions asked. All I would have wanted in return is perhaps a link to my page (which is non-commercial, but then you already knew that, having visited it before). This is unfortunate, because I always hoped that people in this hobby, and especially those in the Buick community, respected my work and efforts at being an ambassador of goodwill for the hobby. I wish you had done the same and respected my work.

I am a professional writer, and don't take plagarism lightly. Your response will dictate mine.

I wish I could say good luck on your auction, but I can't. Also, just for your info, you are asking about 30% too much for a '41 Special 4-door sedan, even a very nice one like this.

Not expecting a reply,

--
