1934 Buick Straight 8!

This was a bit of an impulse buy but here we are! I own the majority of a 1934 straight 8 and 3 speed transmission. Oops! My plans with the engine are to either sell all the parts, or build the engine for making a replica of the Buick Shafer 8 race car. I won't be using some of the parts like the exhaust manifolds or carburetor, so if anyone needs some parts let me know!

I will be asking some technical questions on this thread later as I dig into the engine and parts.

Something which would need to be confirmed - as far as I know the 1934 Series 60 engine has the same cylinder bore as the new-for-1934 Series 40 engine. The Series 60 phaeton here in NZ has a later Series 40 manifold set up with a down draft carb. Whether all of the ports are an exact match I don't know.

The only photo I have is from the wrong side but the carb can be seen. I think it is from a military Ford V8. It was fitted many years ago (50 years or more??) by the mechanic who was maintaining the car at that time.

Parts are slightly more organized now, but more importantly taking up less space! As soon as I get gas for my welder I'll be making a cart so i can roll the block around the shop.

Exhaust is in decent shape, the center section has been repaired at some point. Here's a link to a bunch of pictures: https://photos.app.goo.gl/z6EpJZA46mfPLW4d9

Pistons and rods: pistons look like they may have scoring from the cylinder. I don't know very much about babbit bearings but they seem okay? I'll ask my engine professor what he thinks as well.

What is the purpose of the 4th ring groove on the piston, is it just an additional oil control ring?

Yes. I think that idea was mostly overwith by the late 30s. Oil consumption was high in those days no matter what, but if I am not mistaken the consensus later on was that the fourth ring was doing more harm than good.
