2005 Packard!

Amphicar BUYER

Yes, that is right! A 2005 Packard (according to the TV show last night) is in the final stages of design. It looks like what you would expect a 2005 Packard to look like. It is instantly recognizable as a Packard. I kind of like it!

V-12, all-aluminum overhead valve, fuel injected with a racing heritage, rated for 440 horsepower and 440 foot pounds of torque

See the Packard site here.

Diz...you hit the nail on that. They could be used as Military Vehicles in the form of dummies, just like the boys in WWII used the inflatable tanks, trucks, etc., to throw off the Nazis air power. The Pontiac Aztec could be used as Armored targets at Fort Hood. Personally, I believe GM is trying to go out of business based on the Aztec.

Skyking is correct, too. GM appears to have the tactic of watching what the competition has huge sales successes with then generates a poor quality take-off with unappealing design. (I wish Edwards Demming was still around to guide GM as he did with the Japanese when no one in the U.S. wanted to listen to him on productivity.)

Had to laugh at this scenario. A good friend of mine moved to Atlanta a few years ago. He is in the ATM installation/maintenance business. While he and his wife were visiting recently, I asked what type company vehicle is he driving lately. Andy looked at me and asked: "What's the ugliest thing you ever saw on 4 wheels, Peter?". Without missing a beat, I responded the Pontiac Aztec. You got it. The company bought a fleet of them for bargain basement prices as no consumer wanted them. He is stuck with it.

Well, Mercedes is re-introducing the Maybach, looks like the time is right for a proper American Icon again. Let's hope the idiots at GM don't do the same thing they did to Tucker and DeLorean. I feel more and more lately like GM is following the business plan of British Leyland. Follow, compromise everything, and 'Badge Engineering R Us". Beancounters never could build an automobile, engineers do. Build the best, and let the market decide. That's why Mercedes could buy Chrysler. It is truly ironic that neither Mercedes nor BMW have any clones at all in their stable. I doubt if Mercedes would even want GM. Not much engineering value there anymore it seems. Them dropping Oldsmobile was a travesty. Who in their right mind would buy a Clonesmobile (you heard it here first, lol). They were one of the top division for decades. Edward Demming has to be spinning in his grave, and the division presidents should be ashamed.

MasterWrench...good points.

Your little dig about Leyland is a good example. Well taken. The only reason I have my example of their product is I bought it new and it sort of became a part of me.

Leyland's bean counters, as history will attest, did the number on the company. Not to mention their scrambling to compete with the likes of the Datsun 240-Z (Re: TR-7-8). Again, play-catch up- marketing mindset.

Sorry to detract from the Packard, Amphicar. From the photo, it looks pretty sharp.

Regards, Peter J.

General Motors is in no real position to take anyone down anymore. They're too worried about keeping what shrinking market share they have left, but they should worry about what this car could do to Cadillac. Who is backing this Packard adventure? Estimated price? If the engineering and marketing keep up with the styling, most middle-range luxury cars might need to worry.

That said, what about this car's styling does GM not get? This car is elegant, substantial and looks like 100 mph sitting still. GM builds Azteks and Avalanches, and everything else looks like a melted jellybean.

Diz, this time I have to disagree with you on pricing. It seems the American people don't care what the price is as long as they have it. Look around while driving, these cars & SUV's selling in the 40's & 50,000 are everywhere. I think the Packard will do very well no matter what the price is.

Looks like a space age version of a Bently. should see it turning up in rap videos soon Or a new live actor Jestsons movie just like they did for Scooby Doo

Maybe the new slogan will be "ask the man who leases one" or mayhaps "ask the man who can afford one"...............must be politically correct, mustn't we so "ask the person who leases one" is apropos for this epoch............

Thhpphttt!

The politically correct would outlaw a car like this as non-egalitarian.

BTW Stellite- who is the new portrait? Do you still have the drunken pit bull?

The picture is an oil portrait of me painted by my mother when I was 5, of couse you wouldn't recognize me now......

Mr. Darkey the pit bull is as happy as ever surreptitiously nipping the rum and vodka when not being the sweetest, gentlest pup I've ever had.

You're right about the last statement but don't forget the so-called "politically correct" were the first to adopt the outward emblems of entitlement like SUV's, McMansions, and stock-driven 401K's which they didn't even understand.

The JPG shown is of a one-off "1999" Packard that is now defunct (as is the company). I saw this prototype "in the flesh" at the 1999 Packard Intl meet in Orange, CA. Personally, I didn't care for its looks and would have preferred a different "ox bow" grille than the 1948-50 take-off.

According to opinion on the Packard Chat on this site, the "2005" Packard looks substantially different, but no one has yet found a JPG online of it. See that thread for more details.
