steelman
My curiosity is killing me. Star Wars was not released until 1977. President Reagan didn't use the term until 1983. What were these called between 1967 and 1977? And how did the Star Wars term for these become so universally accepted?
PWB
I love SW but I do cringe when I see it applied to my ride. George Lucas was 23 when my filter (silencer) housing was created. Notice the younger ones are collectively bunching it all into a "that's from the nineteen hundreds!" Ugh Edited October 3, 2019 by PWB (see edit history)
Chimera
Before the "Star Wars," it was just called an air cleaner, hehehe. Maybe dual snorkel or ram air cleaner? 1

Maybe dual snorkel or ram air cleaner? There are two types of housings available - the CA emissions version (...shown), and a non-CA version. They are a one year only part for '67 GS 400 cars, and '67 Riviera GS 430 cars. The air cleaner shown is a California unit - the non CA units did not have the valve cover tube or the base pipe connection and no engine smog pump unit. Quit often the bases went missing, as parts scavengers figured the air cleaner was the only part worth saving. However, the bases were an SW air cleaner exclusive too, and totally different from a regular air cleaner bases. Chimera
I am currently working on one California version and one non-California. Obviously the California air cleaner has the hole punched out on the side and the base has the extra pipe.

You'll just have to locate someone who's doing it near you.
