Bill Boudway
Does anyone have a source for the bearing and seal for rebuilding the water pump on our '26 Chrysler G-70?
Spinneyhill
What sort of bearing and seal are they?

Bushing can be made easily on a lathe, and packing from online or maybe a local hydraulic rebuild shop. But I would guess there might be wear on the shaft itself. It that case you either make a new shaft or build up the old one and machine it back to spec. .
Spinneyhill
I would expect bronze too, perhaps, but Oilite wasn't used quite that early I think. So not sure, hence my question. I expect rope packing too, but how did they keep the water out on the wet side before oil-impregnated bushes?

Do you mean water getting to the bushing? That is why there was "water pump grease"; the sticky waterproof tan/honey colored grease. The packing was on the outer side of the bushing. . You mean they smeared it over the back of the thrust washer and around the bush end and it was stable (for a while?) against hot rushing water? HarryLime
There is a grease cup or zerk to routinely service the bushing .

Grease cup is better than sticking a greasing gun on it and getting excess grease into the coolant. Owners manual probably says how much to turn the grease cup knob during each engine oil service at X number of miles. The grease from my Dads old shop from the 50s is not fibrous at all. Feels strange compared to chassis grease; hard to describe.

Grease cup is better than sticking a greasing gun on it and getting excess grease into the coolant. PLEASE use a grease CUP on a water pump all the time, except for judging if your car was originally fitted with a zerk/nipple. A lever action grease gun will certainly blow the seals. If your pump was originally fitted with a nipple/zerk (1937-48 Cads, for example), it was intended to be lubed ONLY by a small gun with a T handle on the end, operating a screw drive--which dispensed small quantities at low pressure. Water pump grease is available from Restoration Supply www.restorationstuff.com and may be available at your local bearing house under the name Lubriplate #115, or as Calcium grease NLGI #4. I believe Grainger carries it too.
Bill Boudway
Hi folks, Thanks for your info on this. I'm interested in learning the replacement parts and work needed to replace the existing bronze bearing and packing with a "modern" bearing and seal. Does anyone have info on the machining required to housing and shaft to fit replacement parts? Thanks, Bill Boudway
