Guest 53 Roady
What is the best source for the pressure hose for the 53 Roadmaster? Thanks, Pat
JohnD1956
I brought mine to a local hose maker. It's not a perfect match, but it works great.
Paul Falabella
Same here for my 55. Cost about $75. Not sure about the '53, one of the hoses on the '55 is two sections. If you get a one section(single diameter) hose, the pump will be noisy.
Guest 53 Roady
Wow. The 52 book shows 1 in 2 sections {fig7-19}. I was about to buy one from CARS for $40. It may have a reduced diameter end? I want to get this right before June. Thanks Pat
bhclark
I took my old one from my '58 to Napa and they built me one. Again, not a perfect match, but I thought it was a better solution than a 50 year old OEM hose of questionable aged rubber. Cost about $35. 1953mack
This might clear up any confusion and getting hosed by a "one size fits none" parts house. The 1954 BUICK PRODUCT SERVICE BULLETINS booklet came out with an article suggesting replacing the 1953 OEM pressure hose with the new style hose with rigid pipe at each end to quiet down "...gurgling or frying noise...before attempting any internal repairs to the steering gear or pump..." The pics below are of the new style hose with the correct ends and noted dimensions. I lucked out and found this one on eBay. Weatherhead was an OEM supplier that Eaton bought out. NAPA advertises that they sell custom made hoses by Eaton. If you stretch out the hose and add up all of the dimensions, you should get a 24" length.....EXCLUDING the 1.25" dimension for the ninety-degree bend.....at the valve end of the hose. The label shown in the last pic mentions that it's also applicable for all 1954-1955 Buick's with hydraulic steering. WillBilly53
Oh wow! The timing of this thread is perfect. I'm just about to rebuild my power steering pump and have no original hoses to go by. I was going to ask for specifications and photos and once again this forum comes through. Thanks for specs Al!
Guest 53 Roady
Great info Al. I think my hose is a 2 piece original or an early replacement. It has an unplated brass fitting on the pump end and looks like the pic above on the valve end. It is quiet but has sprung a leak. No one has responded about the CARS hose{SH535P1} so I am suspicious. I can try my local NAPA or I can take my old hose to Clarkson Power Flow along with the Service Bulletin to see what they can do. Anybody want to weigh in on which? Thank you all.Pat

Guest 53 Roady
Thanks Paul. You have solved the CARS question. And I see what you are saying John. I will remove mine tomorrow but I am seeing 2 diameter hoses on either side of the insulating sleeve.Pat
Guest 53 Roady
No luck at NAPA or Car Quest so I went to the hydraulic shop. Their fittings are long and they don't have a 1/4x3/8 reducer in one piece. They could do 2 hoses and a union but the hose won't route as it used to. The 53's go down before the center of the valve cover. The hydraulic shop wanted to make a 1/4 inch hose with a 3/8 pump end but that sounds like the noisy one. My old one has a really tight bend right next to the 90 degree valve end. GM Obsolete in Phoenix said to send them my old one and they would rework it.Any suggestions???Pat Edited April 13, 2015 by 53 Roady add pics (see edit history)

Guest 53 Roady
I needed to get the car mobile so I can move it around so I decided on a local solution. One of the best hydraulic houses had long fittings only which would probably be more durable on a backhoe. I found another shop which had shorter fittings and had 2 hoses made with a union. There is a lot going on around a 53 steering box. The old hose had the 90 degree end and then the hose bent at another 90. I had the new one made with the curved tube end like the Buick update pictured above. I had to change the routing a bit but it works and looks OK.
