Guest chester06412
Hi all.First postI have an older friend of mine who doesnt use a computer and asked me to help identify this hood ornament. He is 75 and his dad had a local garage where he fixed cars. This ornament was saved from a long time ago-possibly 75-80 years old. Anybody here have an idea what make and year it is from?He is also looking for a value on it and is possibly for sale. Thanks for your help.
TerryB
Looks to be an aftermarket item that was sold by auto supply companies to dress up a car. These items are nice to collect but are not worth much, especially in its current condition. Not really specific to any make of car.Terry

Guest AlCapone
I bought one that is like that from Western Tire in about 1965. I will try to find the picture to see if it is the same. $4.95 as I remember.Wayne Edited November 5, 2014 by AlCapone (see edit history)
knee-action
Possibly 1932 Nash...been debated for years. Google: Mermaid Radiator Mascots. Click on images. See image on 4th row down, second from left. Click on that image. Click on visit page. Good reading from the Nash Club. Enjoy.
Dave Mellor NJ
This is the ornament Knee-action refers to. It does look the same.Whether it's actually a 32 Nash needs a Nashguy to tell us. Somebody thinls it's worth more than $4.95. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1932-Nash-Radiator-Cap-Mermaid-Hood-Ornament-/231376249921

Guest chester06412
Wow!thanks so much!Great info.I compared it to the ebay one up close and it seems to be an exact match. Looks like my friend removed the radiator cap.He said he had it mounted on an old car of his for awhile and modified it to fit then removed it again for fear it would be taken. So glad I came to this forum. This will make his day

Guest Skyking
George Petty was the designer for Nash's Flying lady. They were usually sold from dealers for the Metropolitan, although I always thought they were to big for Mets. https://www.google.com/search?q=george+petty+flying+lady&biw=1280&bih=891&tbm=isch&imgil=xeTSubib4GFOpM%253A%253By7UHbu5QibeqPM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.nashcarclub.org%25252Finquiry%25252Fflying-lady-petty.html&source=iu&pf=m&fir=xeTSubib4GFOpM%253A%252Cy7UHbu5QibeqPM%252C_&usg=__Ynximt7zNVnl6jnOAf15QL_M13U%3D&ved=0CCkQyjc&ei=GSZaVJSuIo2nyATR04LQBg#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=xeTSubib4GFOpM%253A%3By7UHbu5QibeqPM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.nashcarclub.org%252Finquiry%252Fflying-lady-petty.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.nashcarclub.org%252Finquiry%252Fflying-lady-petty.html%3B700%3B498
knee-action
chester06412....You are certainly welcome. Glad we could assist. You have a great mascot there. Say hello to your 75 year old friend for me. I am 75 too!!
Guest AlCapone
I would give you $4.95 for it!!!Ha.If you want to sell, give me a price. In days of old they said money doubles itself every 7 years. So 5 dollars in 1965 equates to $600 plus today. Are you offering him $600 dollars ?( lol ) Wayne
Guest sixball
I was going to guess Nash just because of their nicely done nudes all the way into the 50s but I thought that was too easy.

TerryB
Glad to hear it might have some value. The few I have found have been usually aftermarket items, especially when they have a big mounting screw on the base. Terry

Guest Skyking
Yes I did but the replicas were very close.I know the ones I've seen have Petty engraved in them. That would surely make the difference whether they're aftermarket or not. Something the poster should check.
