Guest Australian 1923
I have recently acquired a Delco D249 Starter/Generator fo my 1923-6-45. everything is good on it except the lower brush holder which has completely rusted out beyond repair. Can anyone help with a complete unit or parts thereof. Does anyone have any suggestions where I could try. I would consider buying another D249 just to get the brush holder unit. A full set of photos are attached.Photos are courtesy of Leife Holmberg in SwedenDavid

Dandy Dave
I have a parts unit laying around. Post a photo of the whole unit so I can compare it to what I have and see if the unit, and part is the same. Dave!
Guest Australian 1923
Hi DandyI tried sending you an email but Yahoo says you're not with them so I am posting the photos. The Blue one is on my car at the moment but totally wrecked internally. The rusty old one is the replacement which looks bad but is in fact very good inside except the lower brush holder.regardsDavid
jbbuick22
Dave, Which brush holder, generator or motor brush? The pt#s for 22 are different than 23, mabe they are close, also I think 24 might be the same. By the way your snubbers will be in the mail this week end. Brian_Heil
For reasons unknown, the starter / generators do not interchange in the early 20's. There is a three digit code stamped in the casting of the S/G just above the Delco tag. This number is specific to year. There is also the full part number stamped near this number too. Whether the brush plate you seek interchanges is a good question, I don't know. But the Precision Power people noted above would. I know for a fact the 22 to 23 to 24 S/G's do not interchange. Leif Holmberg
I checked my Brush holder and Brackets on my 1923 4cyl.mod my 1924 4 cyl.mod and my 1925 6 cyl.std.mod.(4 and 6 cyl.Starter-Generator are not interchangeable exept for the brush holder-bracket.)They were all the same type, the only thing I could see, was that the Generator brush holder was sheet metal or cast aluminium , and the Starter brush holder was all cast brass.(yellow). They all looked like the photos as David in Australia sent at first. You can see the different in these pictures, one complet and one missing the brush holder for Starter. Leif in Sweden. I already sold him mine. Now, if they were only this easy to find for my 1915 C-36. It's a Model 51 Delco. One of a kind, one year only cus-ed thing that it is! Dave! Mark Shaw
Yes, I know. There is a 1915 C-36 in Portland that I will be test driving for a friend next week-end. We just got it running again and he had to re-work a broken wheel hub. I know he has a spare engine, but I don't know if it has a starter-Generator. Dandy Dave
If he has a C-36 Roadster, or C-37 Touring car, he better hang on to it. The number on it will be stamped. Mine starts with a PO 51 xxxxxx for the serial number. The book I have lists it as a model 51. I don't really need one, but it would be nice to have a spare kicking around just in case. Dave!
