  1. You guys are amazing to post all the parts available on CL!!!!!
  2. I heard some from the exhaust too, but there were some pops in the engine bay too....I guess I'm not sure how it started now, but most soot and fire was near the carb. Adjuster was out to see car today...maybe be able to get car on road to recovery starting next week....hope to find out what started the fire so it can be fixed....don't think I'd wanna be around when your muffler blew...sounds a lot like an old mailbox I blew up w/ an M80 as a kid!
  3. Thanks...yes, I have used them on another car and the harness fit perfectly......I will use them on this car too.
  4. So, you don't think a backfire through flooded carb could have started a fire on a block that had gas on it? Just where I was heading in thought from the comments I'm getting.....I'm sure I'll be talking to you more as I get through this process on my '24
  5. Is Romar still in business or did they start another website?
  6. Thanks....yeah, I wish I had bought a fire extinguisher for it before taking it out on my first run! I guess then that a backfire could have ignited it ... it did seem to flood out.....it is fixable, but just sickening as I had just got it that morning..I was just excited to test drive in in the neighborhood. Paint on hood, cowl and radiator shell was only area affected.....will need new wiring, lacing and hoses....test components out....amazingly paint on block just seems sooty and cleans up nicely from what I can see.
  7. Again, not my photo, but my engine like this...haven't looked closely at the carb, but don't know where mine would accept something like this....my '29 has a filter / arrester on it something like this, but not sure how to adape to a '24.
  8. Not my photo, but my engine like this.....the carb could have leaked gas on the block as you can see where block flares out...engine pans also there.....it could have been a backfire that lit it?...maybe gas on generator? I don't know.
  9. I think it was that the carb was flooded and dripped onto hot engine block......not really sure....the car backfired a few times and I couldn't seem to get any power.....I pulled over and then noticed the flames coming from hood louvers. It looks like most damage is to paint on hood / cowl and wiring / hoses. I was fortunate that the fire busted the radiator hose and that the water sprayed out most of fire....fire dept was there in less than 5 minutes and put rest out. Yes, engine pans are in. I guess I have 2 project cars now though I did get insurance on it the week before!
  10. I was going to get an extinguisher for the car as I have one for the '29, but I was wanting to drive the car first....never thinking the first time I drive it that it would catch on fire! I have definitely learned a lesson!
  11. I recently bought a '24 Dodge. I was practicing driving it and the car was backfiring and had little power. I have a '24 instruction book and felt I was doing everything right, but apparentl;y carb had leaked onto block and then caught fire. Luckily fire was contained to engine bay, but paint on hood/ cowl / radiator as well as all wiring and who knows what else will have to be redone. Anyone else have a similar situation w/ carb? ...a shield or something? I am kinda heartbroken w/ the situation, just don't know what to troubleshoot in the future.
  12. That would make sense as the people that sold me the car said the restoration looks about a dozen years old, but had no other provenance on the car. So, it sounds like the speedster redo was done after 2000, vs. a custom redo from the 20s. Is the yellow one the 1919-1920 model that was redone as a racer in the mid 20s? I have seen that photo online. Thanks for the info.
  13. Thanks, yes, I've seen those pics as I'm the guy who bought it from GR Auto Gallery. I saw it for sale several years ago and admired it, but it was way more than I could afford. Then it came on the market again at a much reduced price and then that price fell again. What I was told is that the previous owner bought 13 cars at one time and then decided to sell them to get into real estate. I think the reduced price is a reflection of what many people think regarding the dropping prices of most 20s cars; their waning popularity w/ collectors. I have found it seems easier to locate parts for the 4 cylinder Dodges vs. the 6 cylinder '29 I'm restoring now, hopefully you've found that in your favor. Good luck to your work on your '27!
  14. Anyone know anything about this 1924 roadster that is now in more of a speedster configuration? Just trying to find out about it's history and if the work is more recent or was modified when new.
  15. I am looking to buy a car from 1924 that didn't come with bumpers or windshield wiper originally, much less seat belts and emissions controls. I am in Texas and antique plates are offered, but hear that they only allow the cars to be on the road when going to shows. I would like regular plates that allow me to go on nice rides more frequently, but not really consider the car as a daily driver. In getting regular plates I will have to get car inspected. My question is, for fellow Texans, will a car of my age without typical features in today's cars pass inspection in order to get regular plates for it?
  16. I'm the tall guy in back and was in the 10th grade when I got my first car, a '29 Dodge DA-6, back in 1971. Still have it and undergoing it's 2nd resto.
  17. Wasn't someone looking for one of these about 2 months ago....on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ingition-Switch-Coil-Northeast-Electric-Desoto-Chrysler-Plymouth-Dodge-1929-32-/172489483194?hash=item28292ca3ba:g:s9AAAOSwt5hYfVMg&vxp=mtr
  18. Yeah, I didn't know...it looked like Maxwell had 3 different radiator designs in this era. ... one with a triple curve like an early White steamer, one with an arched top and an angled one like a Model T...I think you nailed it with the Buick though...I was just leaning towards Maxwell as her father had that dealership.
  19. Wow, that 1910 Buick looks right w/ the cowl lights, headlights and front of front fenders!
  20. Initially, I thought Ford too, but the front springs didn't seem right and no 'prow' on front of fender.
  21. Lois Quick was the first woman to drive in Marfa, TX. (center) Her father (possibly at right) was a Maxwell dealer. I was wondering if anyone could identify the car in the photo...is it a Maxwell? The round cowl light lenses make me wonder possibly a 1914?
  22. Nice car! Wonderful story and glad you still have it in your family! The knowledgeable people on this board can help you as they have helped me!
  23. I've got a "money pit", but my DA was my first car when I was 15 back in '71.....sentimental.....so I just throw money and time at it and have fun with it! I keep seeing that 20s sedans, especially, aren't holding their value, but I don't care. I really like the wire wheels on the one you posted....mine are wood, but like them too!
  24. Thank you for all the info...hopefully, start that project this week...hoping the warm weather in the Dallas / Fort Worth area holds for a bit!
  25. Sure looks like a DA to me...I've got a '29 model...I've seen them w/ wire wheels ( I've got wood) and sidemounts....the front fender mouldings look like DA..the luggage rack also looks like the Dodge luggage rack from that era.....looks fairly intact from the photos I'm seeing.
