  1. When it is running, have you taken off the vacuum line and 'felt' if there is suction? I only ask because it sounds as if your tank is working - it just isn't refilling. Refilling is the job of the vacuum line and the tank/gas line...If it were me I would probably check for clogs/leaks on the vaccum and fuel line first, you may have some old sendiment in the tank blocking the pickup or the pickup is not reaching the fuel level in the tank (my car is a top-draw; not sure about yours)
  2. So GALCO has a minimum order of $35. Each one is a little over $5. Anyone want to go in on a group buy? I need 1. Who needs the other 6? I'll keep searching the web but right now most sites are pointing to GALCO for their sourcing.
  3. I guess we could just wind one that dims the lights to your satisfaction and not worry about the exact reading. The manual or newletter has a good picture of this, so it is time to tinker -- my favorite time!

  5. I am also a newbee, but I will take a stab as I am going through my fuel system to figure out why it is 'starving' the engine when getting up to speed. Anyway, back to your issue. My guess is #4. The tank venting is not closing; which means no gas being pulled in 1. Check the line from the petcock to the float chamber to make sure it is not obstructed in any way. 2. Then I would pull the plug off the top of the vacuum tank, fill with gas, leave the plug out and see if it will run longer (until the tank empties). 3. I would check for good vacuum coming off of the engine; without vacuum the gas can't be pulled into the tank. 4. Then I would make sure the vent tube and the vent hole on the vacuum tank are lined-up and the passage is clear (mine was partially blocked when I got my car; so be sure to test it with some air pressure. Also make sure it closes well (because if it is open then the vacuum from the motor will just pull air from the vent hole and no gas will be brought into the tank. If the rod is not seating well you can use some toothpaste (not the gel type) to fine 'grind' the build-up off. That's my two cents but you already have the heavy hitters on the board helping you and I completely defer to their experience. Hope this helps. Richard
  6. I think you really need to qualify what your need is. Most of the above are talking about covering a car with great paint. I have a couple of convertibles and alwys put a cover on them when they will be staying outside for a length of time. Both for UV protection as well as adding another layer to keep water out in the driving rains we get in the South. not to mention bird droppings/cat hair/ and leaves/pine needles. I always crack the windows for air flow - unless it is raining. In the garage I use the cheap flannel or cloth covers to keep animals (cats) shop dust and other floating stuff from accumulating on the cars. My cars paint is not that good so I don't worry about the micro scratches.

  8. Need some guidence from those on the forum. Starting out from first the car, a 1919 touring, does just fine. In second I can start to pull away and then as it hits higher revs the engine starts to lurch (varies between high and low revs) even though he gas pedal is in the same position. If I go ahead a shift to third I can maintain speed but not accellerate at all. I suspect the distributer's 'automatic' advance is gummed up and the weights , or just one of them, is not spreading out as it should. Before I tear this all out and go through it I would like to hear any advice from the other forum members who may have had expereince with this. Thanks in advance, Richard

  14. Taking some backroads and came across this old salvage yard. Owner was nice enough to let me walk through un-escorted. Took about 40 photos of the more interesting cars. Here is a sample. There were several late 50's Buicks, Silver Streak wagon (yes, it still sports the hood trim), 2 57 Chevy sedans, 3 or 4 mid-60's Nova IIs, some old F1 pickups, 65 Impala fastback, 2 59 Square birds, 2 57 Rambler Cross Country wagons that looked complete, Hudson Jet. Lots of wagons and trucks. Most are in rough shape, but sport a good bit of trim and interior pieces. Ground is very soft. Enjoy!

  18. Top two are definitely Cadillac. More than likely trunk or hub cap emblems...the actual size will tell you which year as it changed in size quite a bit.

    Rear end??

    Some limited-slip diffs will also spin both wheels in a straight line. This may only be true on newer cars, but i thought I would give you another option.... Try and do a donut. If the one wheel is not spinning (but dragging) then it is NOT a posi. If both wheels spin you will turn around very quickly and know you have a posi. Dirt is best, but that car can probably do it just as easy on pavement.
  23. You posted in the proper forum to get the Maxwell people going. Obviously, this group would be more interested than any other. I just know the 'What is it' forum is seen by a large number of people and if this car is for sale - it would go rather quickly. I would love to have it, but the effort/time to track down the legal owner and negiociate a deal is prohibitive for me right now - I am just to far away. Let me add, that I appreciate you taking the time and effort to spread the word on this car. I am sure others are appreciative as well. You should also submit your photo to Hemmings Motor News for the annual 'Abandoned Autos' calendar. I think this would be a great candidate.
  24. That's a neat car. Where is it located? Probably in the mid-late teens for time period. If you post in the 'what is it?' section you would get more traffic.
  25. My first surprise is that my wife and kids wanted our Xmas card to have the 1919 Dodge with them. Then for Christmas I got a DB blanket for the Dodge, a Dodge Service Sign from one son and a Cadillac Service sign from the other, Not to mention two car books and the 2009 'Abandoned Autos' calendar from Hemmings!
