  3. Detroit did stop Tucker, let us not forget how the steel was costing Tucker twice as much as the big 3 (why would the steel manufacturers do this to Tucker when he was going into mass production? The steel companies would have listened to the big 3, their biggest customers and raised the price on Tucker), Also, Benson, the propped up dictator of the Tucker company (in order to sell stock) was recruited from, I believe Ford or Chrysler and he wanted to change around the car to having the engine in the front and the seat belts taken out, etc. essentially trying to kill what was unique about Tucker compared to the other car companies and the main selling points. Also, they took back his factory in Chicago a few days before the deadline, now why would they do this? and the raid on the tucker factory was in the newspaper before it happened and people lied about reciepts in court to make Tucker look bad (but then he produced the reciepts) As to the point about not being able to sell the cars, after WWII every manufacturer from 1946-1948 had the same basic, boring outdated pre war designs (there are a few exceptions) with the exception of grills, etc. people were starved for an all new car and the people would have bought Tuckers, look at all of the hubub before the car was even created. Finally, the point about Tucker being as much of a threat as a lemonade stand in comparison with a mcdonalds, someone probably said the same thing about Japanese cars 40 years ago!
  4. Don't get rid of it! Once it's gone it's gone!
  5. Detroit stopped tucker because he was an American person and entrepeneur who would have definetly beaten them in that era, because people would have loved an independent guy making advanced, safe, and reliable cars ala' his predecessor Henry Ford. As for Japan and China they cannot be stopped and never could be, because of the free trade agreements, etc. But, if you can't beat em join em! Daewoo manufacters those small sized chevys for chevy ( what are those pieces of s?!" named?) Anyway, they are a snoball and they are getting bigger and bigger. Also, the Asians manufacture many components for the U.S. cars.
  6. Look, old cars pre-70's should not have to pay any registration, it is ridiculous!
  7. It is an atrocity how these counties think that they can dictate what goes on with storage on a private property. We don't dictate to them were they take their special interest money or where they meet their mistress' (low blow!). I live in CA too and it is crazy that we even have to pay registration on the old cars! And how they think they can dictate what we put on the property, unless it is a risk to public safety like a drug lab, etc. then they should not touch it. And to our Scottish blogger, America is the land of hands off, but when a few wacked out far lefties or far righties take over it is hell for everyone! Not everywhere in the country is like that!
  8. Great! CA should follow that lead and make it easier to use them!
  9. GM is tanking because it sells the cars for to much money and they have lackluster designs and few innovations and nothing to set apart, say, a Malibu from a Camry or Taurus. Whatever happened to car companies setting themselves apart with far different designs and technological innovations ala' the late 1930's and 1940's Detroit, things like heaters, radios and semi automatic and automatic transmissions also, let us not forget about the great Preston Tucker even though his cars were made in Chicago and only 51 were made, but, he was innovative and it helped along the stuffy and stagnate car industry, and all of the brands looked different you could always tell if it was a Dodge or Chevy coming your way or a Lincoln compared to a Ford by looking at a grill or the tail end now, the small size lincolns look like Malibus and they look like everything else plastic and junky. What we need now is another Preston Tucker to shake up Detroit and Japan.
  10. I think that the whole collector car thing has been blown out of proportion, people take it too seriously, (check out my blog on the cars behind the tape in general discusion). For example, Pebble Beach, etc. and the people who dump $20000 into a paint job, etc. and they are afraid that someone will take their car or put a finger print on it. I met a guy the other day when, I was getting my tires changed on my '48 who, was telling me about his '57 chevy (yawn, sorry 57 guys) He was telling me how it is locked in his garage at his shop, with a security guard patroling outside, then an alarm on the building, and the doors are locked and he has a battery shut off, kill switch, hidden gas shut off and lo jack, it's like seriously, calm down, dude! And to top it all off he was telling me how much he spent on the paint, etc. Give me a break! People forget that these '57 chevy's and others that are now so prized and at the fru fru auctions and shows like pebble beach and barrett jackson were once worked on in little old dumpy garages with old crusty car mechanics not 'Service Technicians'with white gloves! Many people take it way to seriously and use it as a status symbol, people should enjoy and drive their classic car all the time, and not have it locked up, and afraid someone might put a fingerprint on it.
  11. I was at the Los Angeles County Fair tonight and I went through the parade with my '48 (the one in the pic. on the left) and we parked our cars, every other car was 5 ft. behind caution tape, were you could only see the front not the back inside or interior. My '48 is all orig. down to the paint and it still looks pretty good, The guy with the tape came around and I told him that I did not want any, that my car is meant to be enjoyed and looked at not behind tape, were no one can see it. I brought out my albums and pics. and opened the hood, trunk, doors and had old 40's Sinatra playing on my boom box and it was a big hit, more people came and looked at my car than all of the other 100 or so cars and my car was on the opposite side of the aisle and people really appreciated looking at it up close and me telling them the story of the car, I must have had hundreds come by the car over a 4 hour period and I never got a break! So, the question is, do you think that cars should be behind the tape or, out there so, people can get up close and look at them? (granted, watching them as they do) To, experience the car. And do you think that people are too finiky when it comes to a fingerprint on the car or someone who gets too close? I personally am not, I think that the car is a rolling piece of American History and everyone has the right to get up close and take a look and to inspire the next generation (I let any little boy or girl sit in it and get a picture if they want!) and not have it stuck behind tape. TELL ME YOUR OPINION!
  12. It looks like the quality has gone down at GM, not only the cars but, the ad! My 87 year old grandma takes better pics! On her little 35 mm film!
  13. Look, anyone can dump 50 grand into a '57 chevy and make it perfect but, it takes real talent to keep the car original and kept up. My cars are not sunday drivers they, are driven a few times a week. By the way, anyone interested in buying a 1947 Dodge complete drivetrain, engine, etc.? My grandma wants it out of her garage!
  14. It is a bunch of bull, how registration costs anything with the old cars, my '21 cost 65 bucks before I had it transferred over to horseless carriage plates and my '41 costs 55 bucks! Crazy!
  15. Danger Danger Will Robinson! It will be a cheap piece of crap, look, Detroit cant even pull out any decent car for less that a million dollars! All of the cars these days are plastic pieces of junk with bad quality and high prices and bumpers made of plastic! And terrible styling! And I thought the gremlin was bad! (sorry gremlin guys!)
  16. I am 19 years old, I have been into the antique cars since I was little and my grandpa and I worked on the old '21 Chevy (he wanted me to drive it to school!) I finally got it road worthy and trusty this year, after my grandpa died my grandma gave me the car (I am the only grandson!) My collection at that point also included a 1966 Mustang that was in good condition that I bought when I was 12 with money from baby sitting my sister, I drove that car on the FWY for 2 years in a row to High School. My collection then grew to my mom's dad's 1941 Dodge Luxury Liner Coupe that my mother was almost born in, that I found abandoned on a property that my grandmother owns, It sat for 20+ years and it did not run, now it runs perfectly and I drive it all the time, I just got a paint job from Earl Scheib (everyone calm down!) and they did a fantastic job on the rust repair and the paint. Then I purchased my Uncle's 1978 MKV for $500 (he was going to donate it and I told him NO!) to use for college and it runs perfect and I had the air fixed and a new alt. in it. My Aunt's parents were the orig. owners. My most recent addition is a 1948 Lincoln Cont. (the one in the pic.) That belonged to my grandpa, but, he sold it in 1991 (he bought it in 1975) when I was 3 (in 1991) and I was able to find it about 6 months ago and I bargained with the owner and after a small loan from my dad I brought it back into the family again! It is still all original! Down to the Paint and the interior! All of my cars stay original and are not screwed up by flames wheels and 350's!. I love the orig. look of the old 40's cars especially, pontoon fenders and all and the sound of the engines! I was in the Hemmings classic car July 2006 issue in the next generation section and my '41 dodge will be in Hemmings classic car again sometime soon (they already took the pics.)(pre-paint job) Also, my cars are not jammed in a garage and kept there and driven once a month I drive all of my cars at least a few times a week, I also drive them to school. I always say, that all of the costs for all of my old cars does not even equal what a new piece of junk would cost! Also people always say, you must have money because you have old cars and I tell them that it is the exact opposite, I DONT have money because I have old cars!
  17. I have a 1948 Lincoln Cont. (the one in the pic.) Completly orig. with the exception of the engine. I have an original interior in it and it is a little worn and even original down to the paint. I am not redoing it anytime soon and probably will not redo it since it is orig. and I do not have the money for it and I will never sell it since it was my grandpa's car. But, I am curious about the current trend of people wanting original cars, is a worn original better than an immaculate restoration? Let me know!

  19. I am looking for the transmission gaskets for my '48 Continental. Cant find them!
  20. You sold it to Merv did'nt you? I was at his shop when he was talking to someone from AZ. with a connie. Anyway, my '48 Lincoln connie gets more attention than my restored mustang!
  21. I have a merc 8 engine with the numbers E153 and letters EAC on the side of the engine and on the carb is EAC 9510-E2 List # 694-1 I was wondering were I could get a rebuild kit for this carb? Or a new one for cheap or a good used one.
  22. Ok, I had a perfectly running 8 in my 1948 Linc. Cont. Yesterday I decided to jump on the fwy and the engine lost all power and shut down, The radiator, which had absolutly no problem before began to leak and the fan and engine turns but does not turn over. A buddy of mine said it could be the coil or condensor or something to do with the ignition. HELP!
