What's your most 'unexpected' part find?
Harold replied to hidden_hunter's topic in General Discussion
Back in the early '70's, I was in a used bookstore in Manhattan and saw a copy of 'Fix Your Plymouth' by Bill Toboldt. The price was kind of high so I didn't buy the book. I thought about it, and a few days later went back to the bookstore and the book was gone. I was disappointed but had some time so I went browsing in other bookstores in the area (there were several clustered in a few-block radius). In one little bookstore I found another copy of the Plymouth book, marked at $3.00. I immediately went to pay for it, and the shopkeeper said 'Today is half-price day....this book is $1.50'! That book is still on my shelf, 6 feet from where I'm sitting now. -

After several years of searching, I found a good, reasonably-priced used rear bumper for my '66 Fury. It was located in Pennsylvania about 100 miles from home. The interesting part is that my work address is 42 Cindy Lane and the seller's address was 1742 Cindy Lane. -

Glad to hear you got the bugs ironed out and you're on the road.

The US government used sedan deliveries well into the 1970's. They were station wagons with a factory-installed load platform instead of a rear seat. I bought and sold several of them, with the newest being a '76 Plymouth small Fury (B-body).

I use recycled items for packing whenever possible. On the rare occasions that I sell and ship a car brochure or magazine, I make a backer board from cut-down cereal boxes. I use the large-size Kellogg's boxes (Frosted Mini Wheats and Frosted Flakes as found in Costco/Sam's Club/BJ's). That cardboard is very thin and very strong. When shipping 3-dimensional items, I wad-up clean plastic grocery bags and use them instead of plastic peanuts. Better for the environment and better for me!

The '51 Plymouth business coupe went for $7,800.00. WOW! Kinda makes me think my same-but-completely ratty rockerless '51 must be worth $5K. Barrett-Jackson syndrome at its finest!

I have 3 stories of New Cars Damaged before delivery do you ?

When I worked at an Olds dealer, the owner would drool every time we got a night-drop of a new car. It seems like none of them ever had mats or wheelcovers for some reason..... -
Selling my collection of Practical Classics magazine, a well-written British publication with excellent how-to articles and informative features on many different (and some obscure) UK vehicles. These magazines are printed on heavy gloss paper and weigh a lot compared to others. I have 69 issues from 1994-1999. They are generally in excellent condition from our non-smoking pet-free home. $75.00 firm for all, picked-up in or near Freehold, NJ 07728. Thanks for looking, Harold

I'm bulking-out my collection of Plymouth Bulletin magazines, about 150 of them give-or-take, from the 1980's to the present. $50.00 gets them all. Most are in excellent condition, with some that are wrinkled courtesy of the Post Office. They're pretty heavy and I don't want to get involved with shipping them. I'm in Freehold, NJ 07728 so if you're close (or don't mind some driving) these are a great deal. Send a PM if you're interested. Thanks! Harold

In the past few years, 98% of the stuff I list on eBay as an auction goes for the opening bid. I find that setting a realistic price on a BIN works just as well, plus you get a 30-day exposure instead of a few days. The days of 'bidding wars' are over, in my opinion.

When I sold new Fords in the 1980's a new Tempo came in with substantial roof damage. Ford paid the dealer for a proper repair, but the sales manager took the cheap way out and had a pop-up roof installed instead, with lots of filler around the edges. The problem was that the pop-up was installed very far forward to match the location of the roof damage and in the process the dome light was eliminated. The car was on display in the showroom and I told a prospective buyer about the roof and lack of dome light...….he bought the car anyway!
