  3. None of my Buicks have a screen inside the tank. The pick up line should be a "dip tube" with the end just off the bottom of the tank to help eliminate any sediments from being pulled into the fuel line. If they did not remove the dip tube before they coated the tank, they probably coated the inside diameter of the tubing. This may not restrict the flow enough at idle, but upon accelleration, it may starve the fuel pump. Mark Shaw

  7. I used the Hirsch procuct on my 29 Buick tank almost 20 years ago and have had no problems. I cleaned my tank with one can of Drano in 1 1/2 gallons of hot water with about a quart of crushed pea gravel to scrape the internal surfaces. This is how I did it: Removed the sending unit and sealed all un-capped openings. Mixed the Drano in the hot water, poured it into the tank, added gravel put the cap on and did the twist on front lawn vigorously shaking the tank in all directions for about 20 minutes. Dumped all contents, rinsed twice, unsealed the sender opening and blow dried with a hair dryer & just left it in the sun for a couple of hours. Then I used the sealer per the directions. You can take it to a radiator shop to do the same thing, but it costs a lot more & it isn't near as much fun. Mark Shaw

  13. I suggest you put this on the Buick Buy/sell listings. Are they master or standard? (chromed or painted buckets) Mark Shaw
  14. A perfect show car or a rare car can go as high as $20-30,000. If it is a driver with good paint and upholstry, it would be between $10-20,000. Project cars usually go for under $3,000. Now that is quite a range of pricing, but sight unseen, that is the best I can offer. Mark Shaw
  15. Yes, it is really 0.015 out of round. My BrassBuicks group has already indicated that 0.0015 is about the limit. So it looks like I will be sending my spare crank to the machine shop. My spare has never been touched, so if there was a blockage in the rebuilt crank that caused this problem, it will be eliminated. Thanks, Mark Shaw
  16. My 1931 57 lost a rod bearing (probably a blocked oil passage). Since this rebulilt engine has less than 3,000 miles on it, I would like to pour new babbitt for just that one bearing. However, the crank is 0.015" out of round. I have no reference info on what tolerances are allowed for rod bearings, but I expect that this is way too much. I have been told that some old shops had a tool to true the crank bearing without removing the crank from the car. Does anyone know of this tool? What tolerance is acceptable before the crank requires resurfacing? Thanks, Mark Shaw

  18. I am what most people call a "Road Warrior" because I have been a traveling salesman for over 20 years. Most of my travel today is via commercial airlines, and I agree with the previous post regarding the negatives of air travel. My wife and I drove from Vancouver WA to Rochester this year for the Buick National Meet. She had never really seen the USA until that trip. It was fun to watch her enjoying the scenic beauty of the country and experience new people and places. It was also great to travel with the Seattle caravan folks who made the trip that much more enjoyable. If you don't drive to Seattle for the 2007 National, you will never know what it is to drive across this country. I suggest that you plan your trip with other BCA members to ensure that you will have help if you need it. Getting there can be as much fun as being there! Mark Shaw

  21. Air filters are always a good idea, just remember that these older cars were made to run mostly on dirt roads. Today's filters would clog up quickly being located so low in the engine while following other cars on dirt roads. Running a motorcycle filter on your car for touring is a good idea. It's easy to replace it with the original for shows. Mark Shaw
  22. Much older cars like mine with square cut gears almost always make noise in lower gears. I have not yet tried this, but another 13 Buick owner I know uses STP and graphite additives to his 1000wt mineral oil in his tranny. He claims it stops the leaks while keeping the gears wetted & the graphite fills the imperfections in the gears. Who knows? Mark Shaw

  24. I run a BB1 on my 13 Buick. The mistake I made when installing a BB1 carb was the wrong gasket. Make sure there is a hole or slot in the gasket that aligns with the little hole in the top of the carb flange to connect it with the inside of the intake manifold. Mark Shaw
