  1. One wiper motor on the car. It connects to a linkage arm with a bushing (probably plastic, never looked). That one arm is connected to an arm for the driver side with a small (under 1 inch diameter) plastic bushing and to an arm for the passenger side with same style bushing. If the small bushing goes out then the corresponding wiper stops moving but the other keeps working. If the main arm bushing goes out then both sides stop working at the same time. Pretty simple explanation of the system and there could be more linkage arms but I never actually looked at a TC/Daytona/LeBaron to know for sure.
  2. Shoulder belts became mandatory fed regulation in Jan 1968 but were usually a separate belt stored on the headliner and seldom ever used. 3point belts were mostly 73 and newer. Head restraints became mandatory fed regulation in Jan 1969. Either were optional before those dates and a lot of the Chrysler products had headrests on just the passenger side as each side was a separate option. You could always add a late models seats that have the 3 point belt as part of the seat but that might spoil the fun of a vintage interior. Collapsing steering column would be late 60's and newer. Dual reservoir master cylinder for brakes would be 67 and newer in the Chrysler products but can be added to the earlier ones. The rear mounted fuel tank is safe enough to not think about except in certain cars that use the top of the tank as the trunk floor (early Mustangs come to mind) but if a sealing divider is added to separate the passenger compartment from the trunk compartment then you won't have spilled gas flying forward and soaking passengers after an accident. There are a lot of items under a car that can pierce a fuel tank no matter what position it is in. Get used to spending a couple hundred dollars every 6 months for normal maintenance items if you daily drive an old car with points in the distributor, all ignition components need regular replacement unlike a modern computer controlled car that can be ignored for 100,000 miles on the same spark plugs. There are kits to add disc brakes to the front of just about any old car that had drum brakes in front, rear disc is a waste of money on a daily driver as the fronts do most of the stopping in regular driving.

Auction states main damage is mechanical but that it started and idled when they got it.
  4. Is your light missing, damaged, or just not working. If just not working it is an easy repair since a rivet that holds the wire on the bulb bar is almost always just loose and doesn't make contact. The screws that hold it to the car are under the weatherstrip along the bottom of the tonneau cover.

  7. Well, the excel file copy/paste doesn't show up anymore. This time I'll try from the MS Word format. NO, that didn't work. I just kept getting an error message Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /home/forumsaaca/public_html/ips_kernel/HTMLPurifier/HTMLPurifier/Strategy/MakeWellFormed.php on line 493 Even tried just putting in the 1989 cars to make the file size smaller but that didn't help.
  8. That plate number is not the production number of your TC. The plates were numbered in the order the plate maker received the request from the dealership and sequential plate numbers may be for TC's that were put together many months apart but sold at about the same time. Not all dealers even requested the plate so many TC's never got one. The production number is closer to the last 4 numbers on the VIN for the 1989 although the production line would put some higher numbers in front of some of the lower numbers if a dealer had presold the higher VIN because of color or engine/transmission. Some numbers were skipped when changing to the 1990 model year so that VIN is not even close to the production number on 1990 and 1991 TC's.
  9. Hemi, I meant not currently registered, as in letting the registration lapse while storing the car without driving it for several years. Most states have a database they sell that includes info on currently registered vehicles by whatever headings you desire to pay for. These lists do not include any identifiers to the owner or actual address on the registrations since that would violate privacy laws, kind of like the Census bureau provides information gleaned from the forms they have each household fill out.

A lot of that cost would have been used to develop the convertible cowl section (almost all other structural parts are dependent on the cowl), that research was also used to make the cowl section for the LeBaron convertible. The number of LeBaron convertibles produced using that same research would lower the per unit cost considerably. Accountants decide which production vehicle the costs are written off on depending on the tax liabilities for each.
  11. I don't keep up with the Yahoo group much anymore, too inactive compared to this site and Yahoo changed the format which makes the database a chore to update. I switched to using MS Office but will shortly be on only Linux machines so that is out as well. The .doc file is on the yahoo site if anyone wants to download it and use it as a starting point for their own database. A good rule of thumb for cars still around is a third of the production run up to half the production run for cars designed as "occasional use" vehicles, like the TC and Reatta. Registrations cannot be used for these cars because quite a few have ended up stored in garages and not registered for the road.
  12. Roundabouts only work for people who know how to merge into and out of traffic in very short distances. I lived in Alexandria, LA for a while and they had 2 of those things. They got rid of 1 of them while I was living there and talked about getting rid of the other one just because some drivers would try to merge into the inner lane and then merge back to the outer lane to get off at the next exit. One lane would have worked better but they needed 2 for emergency vehicles to get by the idiots. Roads have to be designed for the idiots or no one is safe on them!

They sell thousands of auto parts and the rest of each of these entries only refer to Chevy Caprice, with Mercury absolutely nowhere in the body of text so they HAVE to be just plain stupid not to correct this even if it is computer generated. I would compare this mistake to a car dealer putting Mercury Caprice on the registration forms for the DMV when they sell someone a Chevrolet Caprice (not saying that Matt Harwood would do that). This is not a minutiae mistake, it is about as basic as you can get and is on EVERY part they list for a Caprice. The 'fit list' is correct on these listings. I say again, a company like this will get NO business from me, they are just plain stupid if they can't understand that a Chevy is not a Mercury and vice versa.
  14. The one I get upset about is the seller that lists NOS parts for a 93 caprice chevy mercury (sometimes Ford) and they are obviously for a Caprice Classic. I emailed them through ebay and they corrected a couple of listings then went back to the same old thing. Makes me not want to buy anything from that seller, period, until they figure out that the Chevy Caprice has nothing to do with the Mercury Capri, not even the same manufacturer.
  15. There are still original paint single stage cars in good condition running around out there, and there are base/clear paint cars that peeled off in less than 5 years. I repainted 2 cars (red 71 and black 79) in single stage and they still looked fine after more than 5 years outside but I did keep a good cover on them when parked outside at home and waxed 4 times a year with NON-cleaner wax. The cleaner wax removes some paint each time you use it and if you wax before the old wax is worn off you don't need the cleaners. Don't use a car wash soap that removes the wax (like dish soap) and you should be good with single stage paint. I always waxed at the start of each season. I also used polish on the black car to keep the swirl marks down. Use topline paint like PPG or R+M rather than the lower level paints that each manufacturer offers. With base/clear paint you can still get no durability by using the cheaper stuff and if the paint isn't allowed to flash between coats or before applying the clear you can end up with separation that allows the clear to peel. Some clears also yellow very quickly and are very noticeable within a year or two on light colors.

  17. Your car has the common 160 horsepower turbo 4 cylinder engine. The 200 HP engine would have the sparkplug wires going through the top of the valve cover that has 'Maserati' cast into it, and would have a 5speed manual transmission. Your seats have been recovered, that two tone scheme was not offered on the cars when new.
  18. "Hit a bump" doesn't give enough description to comment on if the struts are good or bad. What did the car do that makes you question the struts? I would question the tires WAY before the struts unless they are less than 5 years old.

  22. Looking closely, I think I see the plate on the rear package shelf causing the reflection in the back glass.
  23. I would not suspect blown head gasket unless you have symptoms like oil in coolant, coolant in oil, or bubbles in coolant. The electric fan is designed to let the engine heat up before it kicks on to cool it down, it won't run at a steady temp but will go up and down regularly. Did the mechanic mention any other symptoms that made him think it was the head gasket?
  24. My grandfather wouldn't buy anything but Studebaker until they stopped making them. His last one was a wagon and he used it like a truck on the farm with NO problems until finally replacing it with a Torino in 1971. I would say that he felt they were reliable.
