  1. Outstanding car for sure. Best of luck with it.
  2. I hate to but have to. 1969 Olds Cutlass with the W-31 option, 350C.I. 350 HP, great shape, runs super but not perfect. Feel free to send e-mail for pictures. Located near Chicago, Illinois. Lookinf for around $18,000.00 oldcarmechanic@msn.com http://pic15.picturetrail.com/VOL619/3950667/12523554/318826213.jpg
  3. I agree with austinsailor and am not convinced that it is a real problem, especially if the car is not driven a lot of miles every year. I have been told that GM sells a 4 oz bottle of additive at their parts counters that works for this. The part number is 12345501 and it runs around $7.00
  4. Hey Tom, do you know Paul Terhost? It may have been his. I was over at his place not long ago and he said that he was taking some of his cars there for the filming.
  5. I have a friend in Ohio that is looking to sell her 64 Chevy. She is asking $15,000.00 Six cylinder with three single carbs, three speed on the column. You can reach me at oldcarmechanic@msn.com Thanks
  6. Welcome to the group Jorgeez You have come to the right place for an education. There's always something new to learn and a lot of very intelligent people to learn from. Enjoy your journey.
  7. I am not 100% sure of your vehical but most drums should not be turned to more than .060 over the drum diameter. So, if your drum was 11 inch the maximum diameter would be 11.060 Many drums of later years have the max dia. stamped into the outside of the drum. I do not know if they did that for 1952 though.
  8. What an excellant fun project. Please excuse my ignorance but are these re-creations or restoration of an original? There is a man here in Illinois that is a big collector of original "Motorama" cars. He has several projects going. I have always been fascinated with these cars. Best of luck to your friend and keep us up to date with pictures.
  9. My wife works for a large paper company and the trucks that deliver there have an added fuel sur charge. The next increaase??? Gas jumped from $3.15 to $3.39 a gallon in the last couple of days and word is it's not stopping until $4.00 is reached. And that's the cheap stuff.
  10. It looks as though you have covered all the bases Mr. Gariepy. Would you really have it any other way? It may be a bit to boring then. Besides, we can not create in our own image. Even if we wanted to.
  11. I'm impressed Glen. You must have made an impression on her. It's really nice to see that see is nice enough to say thanks. I wouldn't make book on most celebrity types to respond. It was a nice thing for you to send those good wishes to her. Ron
  12. Glad to hear that you have made some good progress with the car. Best of luck with the body work. There is a very small vacuum passage from the carb body to the inside of the choke housing. Air is drawn through the tube and into the housing. That hot air will react on the choke spring to un-wind the choke. The piston you speak of (I think mostly Ford carbs had) was an internal choke pull-off. Does the tube to the choke housing get hot? (Be very careful as you could burn yourself very easily.) You need to be sure that the fast idle cam is not stopping the throttle from closing completely. If it is, you could have a choke not opening all the way or the fast idle srew is maladjusted. If the fast idle screw and the curb idle screw are not touching anything and the idle is still to fast, you may have warped throttle plates not allowing them to close all the way. Or binding throttle linkage. Others may have more suggestions. Keep us posted and pitures as you get this car shaped up.
  13. Excelant job done on the engine compartment John Retractables are my favorite cars. I owned one before going into the service. Unfortunately I sold it before I went in. Keep the pictures coming.
  14. I just bought a used vehicle about 6 months ago and every dealer I was at showed me the carfax report that they had on the car. I agree that it doesn't really tell the entire story of the car. Ron
  15. Tom, I hope that your news has been good. My prayers go out for him. Ron
  16. Good thoughts mrpushbutton. I too remember the scare of the anialation of the world. In fact there was talk going around our neighborhood about the family that was putting in a bomb shelter with their adition. It is amazing and a wonderful thing how todays medical knowledge has advanced. And a super comment "Things were simple then, we were children." We spent our time outside, even in the winter. Not parked in front of the television eating and playing vidio games. Well West, what did happen along the way? As generations pass, you can see the lack of discipline. More and more these kids get to do what they want, without regard for anyones feelings. We now have to be sure that there are NO winners in any games and that everyone is equal. It's not the score that's important, it's that everyone had a turn. Nobody learns to lose. Nobody learns defeat. At least not until they grow up and get into the real cruel world. Then they lose it all together and things like N.I.U. happen. I listened to someone talking about the lack of fathers in this world today. The answer is, it's so much easier to just go out and have kids with any woman and not worry about it, then to take responsibility for their actions. No need to get a job and support these kids, just go out and make more. Single mothers can't do it all alone. How do they take care of kids and still hold a job? Simple, they don't. Let the kids do what they want. I agree Paul, everyone did not grow up the same back then. I Graduated in 65 and went into the Army. Did my tour in Viet Nam and did a lot of growing up and learned a lot. But it made me a stronger person even though I was treated like garbage when I got back by the people that I fought for to have that right. And you're right, we did want that dream and did what we had to to try to achieve it. Now they want it just because. 1937hd45, we can only hope that we will get it all together and get back to those days when we were strong. I appologize for the ramblings and getting off the subject but I appreciate the people in this group that are willing to listen and many that still can teach me many things.
  17. This is a pretty neat piece. I was sent this about a week ago and found it amuseing. One problem that I had with it is the fact that it moves rather quickly for my reading. You need to use the pause buton a lot to see whats there. Thanks for posting this
  18. Click on the picture and you should be able to see the entire car at once. You can also toggle to the other picture.
  19. I'm not sure what kind of instructions if any you got with the carb kit, but I have a Motors Manual that has all the specs and procedures for rebuilding that carb. If you would like, I would be more then happy to e-mail you the scaned pages. The float level is supposed to be 5/32 If you do bend the float, you need to make sure that it is level and that you don't do the bending with the needle seated as you could mess the the tip of the needle up. Hope this helps Ron oldcarmechanic@msn.com
  20. Quite possibly my mind has failed as I think back to those days in the 60's. Or, maybe it's just that I never realized that they got to the dealer with so little miles on them. I do remember one particular car that was a 69 Mercury Maurader with a four speed and a 429 in it that came to us with over 50 miles and by the time it got prepped it had quite a bit more. After I was finished with it, every tech in the house had to take it out for a test beat, lol. I would imagine that that would be the time to put a car aside. 44, what are your plans for the car that you plan to keep? How much work do you think that they will take to be finished to drive cars? A fabulous find indeed, wish I could be so lucky Steve,if you had the forethought, the space and funds to do that, you may be a very rich man today
  21. Do you have pictures? Where is the car located? 2Dr.? 4dr.? Feel free to e-mail me pictures. oldcarmechanic@msn.com Thanks
  22. I have to wonder how a vehicle can only have 7 miles on it. When I was preping cars in the late 60's for a Mercury dealership, the cars got to us with much more miles then that right from the factory. I guess if he picked them up at the factory and trailered them home that could happen. Best of luck with your good fortune
  23. What body style is it? What kind of condition is it in? Feel free to send any pictures to my e-mail address oldcarmechanic@msn.com Thanks Ron
